The life and music of an 18th century superstar, Joseph Boulogna Chevalier de Saint-Georges. An archetypal romantic hero, Saint-George was spectacularly gifted, but destined to be an outsider.

Ok just for the record the Alexandre Dumas whose picture they showed was the author of the Three mUsketeers but the man who served under Saint-Georges was Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, father to the author Alexandre Dumas (I think Thomas-Alexandre mostly answered to Alex anyhow) - he ended up becoming the first man of African descent to rise to the position of General in the French army

I'm trying to organize a concert with Chevalier's music but it seems so hard to collect money for that! I really want to promote his music!

What does "Black Mozart' really imply? Perhaps that Le Chevalier emulated Mozart? History says otherwise. I think the title is wrong. Le Chevalier was unique - preceded Mozart and ought to be recognized for his work, some of which the great Mozart actually copied.

I agree. Mozart copied Joseph Boulgne Link - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gM9_ebaEx9-mcXk.html&feature=relmfu

STRANGE BUT TRUE !!

@@anthonyvaughan6470 is it strange? Sounds about right to me when it comes to history in the mainstream. Oh and it's definitely true. Mozart copied him!

They both were 18th century composers, but Mozart wrote circles around this guy. Whether black or white Boulonge's music is but a minor footnote in Western classical music.

@@user-ze5cw1mo1j today people are unwilling to except that fact. Bologne is an average composer

I don't think calling him "black Mozart" implies that he copied Mozart. It's just that Mozart is a well known composer whose name is practically synonymous with musical genius, much like how "Einstein" has come to mean "smart person".

It is a major compliment indeed. It doesn't matter if one was before the other. For whatever reason Mozart is synonymous with super genius, so let's not get our panties in a bunch. I totally agree with your assessment Aidan.

@@andremarceau2736 , let's think of the reality. Every nobleperson was competing to show that their court had the best musicians. Mozart was not the best; Le Chevalier was much more accomplished. Just in orchestration classes, his work is far above the majority of Mozart's work. Indeed, Mozart came after, attended the same academy at one point, and copied him often. Pissed off Salieri that he got away with it.

Well intended or not, "Black Mozart" is a condescending backhanded compliment. It distorts the fact that saint-georges was the predecessor of, and superior influence upon, Mozart. See Mozart's arrival in paris @ the time of saint-georges premeire of hayden's "Paris Symphonies".
