Join me for a walk through my garden as we dive into some exciting summer gardening activities! Today, I'll be planting cucumbers and sharing updates on how everything else is growing. I had a bit of a scare when I couldn’t find my cucumber seeds at first, but luckily, they turned up just in time to beat the rain! I'll show you my tips for planting cucumbers, both on a trellis and directly on the ground, and discuss why I love having them in my garden.
Throughout the video, you'll get a close-up look at my flower-filled whiskey barrels bursting with bachelor's buttons, poppies, and borage. I’m thrilled to report that my tomatoes, marigolds, and onions are thriving this season, and I’ll give you a peek at my carrot and onion companion planting strategy that has worked wonders for me. We’ll also take a moment to talk about garden maintenance. After a couple of weeks away, my garden is in need of some weeding and TLC, especially with grass creeping in and some beans showing spotty germination.
Strawberry season is in full swing, and I’ll share some tips on how I manage my strawberry beds, which are going strong even after eight years. I’ve harvested no less than five gallons of strawberries so far and have been busy making strawberry marmalade, Greek yogurt, and a delicious strawberry glaze! Whether you're here for gardening inspiration, tips on planting cucumbers, or just a peaceful tour of a summer garden in full bloom, I hope you enjoy spending some time with me in the garden.
Thanks for watching and happy gardening!
Rachel 🌼

Sometimes the suggested spacing is for growing things along the ground that can be grown on a trellis. Home gardeners can save space and work load by growing things up a trellis.

I had to move my strawberry patch this year. And I took what I needed then advertised on market place $1 ea bare root. Then dug them up as I got requests for them. They were mostly just pups from my original 30 plants. I sold 400 in one day. I had no clue I had that many. I did that early spring.

Harvested my first cucumber yesterday. Lots of small cucumbers on my plants. I am so glad after the very bad cucumber production from last year. Golf ball size tomatoes on several plants so far. I think it's going to be a good growing season.

Your garden is truly beautiful!! One little tip though, you might want to try growing your strawberries in Green Stalks! It's so much easier to deal with them and harvest, and still easy for the littles to harvest!

Hoping my new strawberries do something this year. Made the mistake of pineberries that did nothing even near regular berries for years to pollinate. Ripped out the pineberries and started over. Old ones do good still.

Wheat looks like grass, I have wheat farmers all around me and its so pretty when it all goes golden. I'm so happy that my first baby tomatoes are coming on the plants, I had to replant the green beans like 3 times and they are finally growing up the cattle panel that we made into an arch for them. My potatoes are doing great also my onions haven't gotten very big and maybe I need to feed them I'm guessing. Your garden looks amazing Rachel.

Hi Rachel, welcome back! Can you talk about your irrigation in an upcoming video? Do you hand water when the forecast calls for no rain? In North Georgia I’m watering using drip, twice a day for 20 minutes. It seems like a lot, but when I cut back everything really suffers!

I'm so happy with my garden this year. I've already pickled jalapenos and set to make pesto from my basil today. We're starting to get more produce than we can eat now, especially tomatoes. I don't really feel like canning them this year, so I'm not sure how I'll preserve them. Cucumbers are huge. I bought bush beans this year and they are prolific and I love them!

You have such an instinct for what happens naturally in a garden! It reminds me of "chaos gardening" but more pure and in tune with nature. Even when you were talking about the roly poly. Your strawberries, allowed to follow a more natural journey, are living proof!

Nitrogen might work for onions because they're a 'modified, underground stem', not a root bulb. An expert would need to verify. But when studying the onion at school, I was surprised that it was a stem, not a root bulb. We used onions in Biology to view the construction of a cell (nucleus, cell walls, etc.).

My poor onions got blown over when we got some high wind and rain. I thought they’d perk up and they didn’t. So I tried forcing it. Then the greens mostly turned brown. So I clipped them down in hopes of them regrowing some so I’ll at least get some to freeze. Having any to hang is out of the question now. 😢
