This video features operations on the Delaware & Raritan River Railroad (DRR) on the first day of summer 2024. In typical New Jersey summer fashion, the humidity made it feel like I needed gills to breathe. If I’m saying that while being in an air-conditioned car most of the day, I can only imagine what it felt like inside the cabs of the two GP9s assigned to the day’s train.
My friend and I arrived at Jamesburg at 7:20 AM, expecting the train to arrive shortly after. After canvassing the area for a few minutes and quickly conversing with a crossing guard, we realized we had missed them. Naturally, we headed south in pursuit and caught up with them near Builders’ General in Freehold. It appears the DRR stores some overflow cars in the Freehold siding, as they picked up a small cut of Woodhavens and left a hopper in their place. From there, it was a straight run to Lakewood via the recently reactivated portion of the Freehold Secondary, swinging into the Southern Secondary in Farmingdale. The crew spotted 11 loads and picked up four empties, with one of those empties being a Guilford System box car. On the way back to Jamesburg, GP9 752 was dropped in Freehold as the FH-01 power; this local is essentially a switching job that works almost exclusively in the Freehold area.
