On the evening of June 3, 2024, my mission of catching NJ Transit GP40PH-2B 4215 at every lower North Jersey Coast Line station brought me to Elberon, the first station west of Long Branch. The subject train of the Elberon shot was eastbound train 4384, the third to last eastbound shuttle of the night. The train made its station stop as usual, and as I packed up to head home, I heard a call to the dispatcher via radio that the train had just hit a car at Cedar Avenue in Long Branch. Being in the area, I went to check out what happened.
First and foremost, no injuries or fatalities resulted in this incident. The only casualty of this event was the driver’s criminal record, as she was hit with charges such as DWI and interference with transportation. The vehicle's damage was contained to the entire rear, making it possible that the driver would have survived if she were in the car at the time. Since the damage was just to the vehicle, the scene was cleared up within two hours, and trains began moving again. Everybody makes mistakes, and who knows what demons this driver may have been fighting, but let this be a reminder that driving drunk is not a smart idea, regardless of whether or not you’re driving near train tracks.
