The series focuses on life in Greenwich Village's 12th Precinct station house. Initially, it looks at Capt. Barney Miller and his work and home life, but it gradually becomes about the officers of the precinct, including always-on-the-verge-of-retirement Detective Fish.

A bit of trivia: This is a remake of the series pilot. The pilot bore the title "The Days and Nights of Captain Barney Miller"; Abby Dalton played Liz rather than Barbara Barrie; and the detectives were a mostly different lot, with only Fish and Wilson being carried on to the series (and Wilson appeared in only one more episode, though he was mentioned a couple of times, and his name remained on the duty roster for awhile).

Freakin fantastic! Love this show. They has great writers for a slap stick comedy show, alluding to the inner city problems and poking fun of ourselves as a species
