In what some may call a deliberate sequence of predictive programming, there is a little-remembered scene in the show Barney Miller, where an arrested man is trying to warn people of the true nature of the Trilateral Commission - founded in 1973 by David Rockefeller.

Winner 1976 and 1977 Golden Globe winner for Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical 1981 and 1982 Primetime Emmy Awards Winner for Outstanding Comedy Series outstanding Comedy Series, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Hal Linden . Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Variety or Music Series, Ron Glass. These are just a few of the many awards Barney Miller won throughout its' tenure. For the full list, see here.. www.imdb.com/title/tt0072472/awards?ref_=tt_awd I remember watching it when first run, was considered a great sitcom by many. Underrated? I think not.

This show may have won 1 or 2 awards, but Barney Miller was a gem! People with polar differences arrested, each story heard, placed together in a cell and compelled to discuss their differences. Rationalizing their own fear, ignorance and realizing they have a lot in common. I loved this show as a child and even had the card game.

i t may be an accurate representation of the going on in a detective squad , however they made so many nypd uniform mistakes it bothers me to watch. . they are sgts that work in a detective squad. . in nypd. the rank is sgt and they wear sgts shields , and when in uniform have sgts stripes . numerous times they have. the men in uniform wearing white ( police officers shield) . barney miller is a captain and wears a shield. thst is not a captain shield and captain wear white shirts in uniform . yes i’m not picking . the closest person the real is inspector luger . a guy like him was in every pct or specialty detective squad .

Exactly! Even a character like Leavitt who is mostly comic relief has layers and depth to him. Every character was flawed, funny but not one dimensional cartoons like they could've been in the wrong hands. That was all Danny Arnold because Hal Linden said that he often asked the actors if he felt they might have played the scenes a little over the top or silly in rehearsals if they would seek help from a police officer like that. Brilliant cast and writers!

This is a really great episode. All the casts was great but man the writers really gave Leavitt and Harris some strong character stuff here. Both characters got to show such different sides of themselves: The usually self absorbed Harris showing some genuine appreciation for Mr. Golden and the usually brown nosing and boy scout Leavitt being revealed as the "snitch" as well as standing up for himself and being so genuine with the guys. This is probably the moment the squad officially accepted him as one of their own. Where is characterization, writing and acting like this in today's sitcoms?

+poor man's kung fu This episode like so many was "ripped from the headlines". Members of the Trilateral Commission had just released a paper called "On the Governing of Democracies" which said that the U.S. had an "excess of democracy" and that government should be more centralized. This report was not secret and there was a lot of anger and fear around what it meant. BTW Yemana is Japanese. He used to be mistaken for Chinese fairly often and one of his catch phrases is "I'm not Chinese."

+Eileen D You're welcome! After I posted that I searched around online and the report I'm talking about had actually come out about six years previously, but people were definitely still talking about it and were very concerned about the TLC -- especially in light of Reagan being elected. (This episode aired in January '81 but had probably been written some months previously.) Note that the main story of the episode is the field associate being a co-worker (someone you think you can trust) -- and then Dietrich reveals he's a member of the TLC, albeit one who takes Mr. Klein seriously and agrees with him.

Good ol’ Barney Miller. Got my 33 year old son to watch with me, good laughs! One of the very few sitcoms my father watched when households had one TV and 4 networks (reruns on channels 36 & 48 from Boston). Living in NH, we only got ABC and PBS. So, it was outside all the time and Saturday morning cartoons. Every week day night, 6 o’clock news…

this show was too good for the general public. honestly. Most people just didn't 'get it'. not only brilliantly acted, also brilliantly written and researched. a thinking persons program, more thoughtful and serious than comedic.. but the comedy/humour was also brilliantly placed and paced. just unforgettable.

🥲 I loved watching this show on reruns as a kid, I didn't get half of the jokes at the time, but I understood the sarcasm, the respect, and the bond co-workers develop. Watching it as an adult I can see just how good it was. The writing balance of comedy & serious emotion blended so well, the casting was so perfect and they all acted so well it's like they actually were that person, so genuine, I mean! ❤

Levitt had a point. It was better for him to be the informant while he still had some respect for the team in spite of how they treated him. Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." In the 70's. Now, we are all looked at as potential criminals and the police have no digression to do the right thing when given evil orders of "duty", like being told to stand down during a mass shooting, (which we never had in the Wild West), and protesters/agitators burning down peoples businesses. That is also called "progress". They have different bosses than they had in the 70's. We were still respected as individuals in the 70's for the most part.
