Capaldi is given his tour de force in these two episodes. Losing Clara and having gone through all the rest, including losing Bill, has taken him to the edge. The castle essentially drives him mad, as he will pound on a diamond wall for four-and-a-half-billion years to make his way back to Gallifrey and a chance to save his Impossible Girl. He does anything, all but dropping his Doctor persona, to make it happen. That's devotion, folks, and though he cannot keep her as his own companion, he sees her off on her own with Me as her companion. The circle completes as Jenna comes back for a cameo in "Twice Upon a Time", where the Doctor's memories of her are fully restored, just in time for his regeneration.
