Hopefully watching me teach will help you with your own lessons.
With Harry we look at some complex junctions. We also work on creating time with the brake pedal and what we are seeing in our mirrors.

Harry is obviously a competent learner so no worries for your brand new Focus, but it's brave of you to let learners in general drive your pride and joy, in my opinion. These types of videos with a willing learner would be good for learners watching.

Love this Ashley. It's great to see instructors encouraging their students. I've heard far too many stories where people hate driving because of a bad learning experience. It takes a good instructor to inform where needed whilst also encouraging learners to be independent and you nailed it! Side note: I love all the videos and have learnt a lot about my driving in the couple months I've been watching, keep up the good work!

Its always nice to see an instructor with a genuine passion for good driving, dropping pearls of wisdom. Not just working to a formula to pass a test. Lots of driving test instructors rather than driving instructors out there.

It certainly looks like Harry will become a good, competent driver. 👍 Love the commentary Ash and words of encouragement must help with confidence. I wish I was still having my driving lessons. I used to love it. Great vid again Ash.

Excellent video, I have said it before and I'll say it again thank you for teaching people how to actually drive safely, not just pass a test. Also it encourages me (at 33 years old) to learn to be a better driver as well. Cheers :)

It is interesting to hear you talk about “friend or foe” with drivers behind. I use a traffic light system (red / amber / green) for all around my car that can also be used on multi lane roads. If a car is approaching in the lane next to me it goes from green to amber and when they are in a position that is dangerous to move lanes it becomes red. It also helps with escape route planning… Red to the left, red to right, amber behind = brake only Red to the left, green to the right, amber behind = escape route to the right but slowing is also an option Hard to explain in writing but I hope everyone gets the picture 👍

Wow, complicated roads. I would surley fail my second test on these roads. I love these videos. I feel it makes me a better cyclist. I never passed my driving test i failed and stopped driving due to life problems. But understanding how drivers deal with things I understand a lot more now what drivers think and more what they might do even if they shouldn't, so that makes me a lot more vigilant being a cyclist

Not watched all of this yet, but a question I've been meaning to ask for a while - how do you teach the emergency stop these days..? Back in the 80's when I learnt to drive, ABS wasn't a thing, and it can fail, so is cadence braking still taught..?
@smilerbob
@smilerbob 8 ай бұрын
A very good question and hopefully Ashley or other instructors will be able to answer 👍 As for me, when I learned to drive at the turn of the century we had ABS and was taught using ABS and to trust the car. However, the vehicles I owned very early in my driving life didn’t have ABS and at the time had quiet country lanes I could use for braking so I took advantage to learn hard, heavy braking without ABS and also not locking up the road wheels by performing slight pumping actions manually. To this day, even with ABS, I do not rely on the technology purely because, as you say, it can fail. I know someone that had to perform an emergency stop but the ABS valve unit had failed resulting in the pedal immediately hitting the floor instead of vibrating with the system. Thankfully they knew to release and reapply. Worryingly even with that happening there was no ABS fault light on the dashboard 😱

the scenario my instructor proposed is to imagine if a child has ran out onto the road infront of you, slam on the brake as hard as possible and come to a stop as soon as possible

The emergency stop is still taught and is still potentially asked to demonstrate on test. Time for an up to date video on the subject I think 🤔

@@ashley_neal Thanks, Ashley 😺Going off on a bit of a tangent, as I often do, I remember my motorcycle test, also in the 80's. Back then it was so easy, you just rode around the block while the examiner observed you from the pavement. When it was time for the emergency stop, he just stepped into the road and raised his hand, and you were expected to stop. Which I did, no problem, but I did hear a story (it may have been apocryphal, but it's so silly it could well be true) that one day, an examiner stepped into the road to stop a bike.... You guessed it, wrong bike 😯🤣

Why you told him to turn Auto Hold back on, and what is the purpose or advantage of Auto Hold in your opinion ? I really struggle to find a reason to use it at all. It prevents me from using creep for tight parking on automatic cars. Your video demonstrates how it gets in the way if you want to let a manual car roll freely. (surprised manual cars started to get it recently). If i want to take my foot off the brake i just put it in N or P and pull the handbrake. Na advantage, but potential for accidents if you get used to it and then find your self in a car without it (or someone disabled it without you noticing). Similar to all the people that drive around at night with just DRL because they think their light switch is still on “auto”, but actually the shop switched it off at last service 2 weeks ago…

i've got a hire car at the moment with auto hold, my students like it. It doesn't stop you from rolling the car or creeping forward at all, it just replaces the hand brake so it's one less control to use while trying to work everything else out

Modern cars are mostly equipped with this feature, so obviously students need to be taught how and when to use it
@johnkeepin7527

This is the first time I’ve come across it on a manual gearbox car. I came across it on my current T Yaris hybrid, and use it most of the time. It also has auto parking brake as well (can be disabled when the weather results in potential freezing on). When the car stops dead, it holds it on with the associated display, then releases it when the accelerator is moved a tiny bit, so it crawls forward at walking pace straight away. Need to be careful about that, but useful most of the time. As with all traction motors, it can churn out max torque at zero speed, so can be a brisk starter from rest (and no risk of stalling, unless the road is iced over).
