Now that both Delpo and Roger haver retired, I've come to watch what I consider their best battle, other than '09 French, '09 U.S Open, and the 2012 Olympics! This was a solid match, where both players got into sweet long rallies as well as showcasing their pinpoint serving under pressure! Both guys got a bit testy at times, which their matches were known for, especially with Roger! Delpo frustrated Roger more than any player he played against;...including Novak! The 3rd Set was some high-octane tennis and great to watch live! A thank you goes out to both of these great guys! Both brought us so many amazing memories that we will always cherish!

Great point. Considering that in his return in 2016 he defeated Djokovic and Nadal in Rio almost only with the slice backhand.. (djoko 1 seed?) Then the 5 set for the davis cup semi final against Murray in GBR (Murray 1 seed) still with a weak backhand... Final vs Cilic number six and defeating Thiem from 2 set down at US Open. That was only 2016! Damn the giant can play some tennis! But with that forehand... I forgot to mention that. What a bullet 🙌🤜

I think Roger loosed so many matches while playing unnecessary drop shot at match point or going to the net at a high risk (see this match and wimb 2019)....
@JiraiyaSama86
@JiraiyaSama86 4 жыл бұрын
Arpan Mahapatra it’s not unnecessary if you think about his game. He doesn’t want to play too many long rallies, and using the drop shot or going to the net helps shorten the rallies. As any player grows older, they’re going to want to play more short points. Plus he’s still very successful, and it’s been working for him most of the time. It’s just some opponents, especially depending on the day may have answers. He has to force the issue, and at the same time, mix things up enough to allow himself to have a chance. Sometimes it’s just poor execution, nerves, timing, luck and so forth. You can have the right game plan but still lose. It’s part of the game.
@arpanmahapatra4342
@arpanmahapatra4342 4 жыл бұрын
@@JiraiyaSama86 but I think when you have match point against somebody like Novak(mentally stronger as Roger loosed so many close match against him like USO 10 11 wimb 14 any many masters)...he goes on a very high risk at match point and then loose confidence and point...you have to be mentally prepared and physically to win at match point at grand slam
@JiraiyaSama86
@JiraiyaSama86 4 жыл бұрын
Arpan Mahapatra consider this, Novak is more likely to win in longer rallies. He is also capable of some of the best offense, and shotmaking from defensive positions. He can wait out Federer if he has to. Federer is older, and has to avoid it being a physical contest against someone known for being incredibly fit to play long matches and able to recover quickly from most of them. He does prepare as best as he can and takes care as best as possible to try to make it to the end of any tournament to have the best chances. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. Nothing is guaranteed. And he doesn’t dwell too much on the losses and continues to move forward. Best of all, he’s still playing, and still at a high level. There’s not much more to ask from him. He understands the odds, and has likely accepted them. He still schedules things well, which has enabled him to stay at the top. Obviously there will still be the occasional injuries from nowhere, but it’s all part of the sport. Also understand this, he still wants to play for maybe 1 or 2 more years currently. Best way to ensure that, continue his scheduling and continue to play his brand of attacking tennis where he makes sure, even on match points, to try to shorten points whenever he can. He can handle the loss. Us as fans should be able to handle it as well. After all, he’s still playing and still having fun. We should too.

Roger his biggest weakness is mentally. He has the game to beat pretty much everybody, besides a top shape Nadal on gravel and a top shape Djokovic on a slow court. But you can see doubt come into his shots on important moments.

Great stuff for Delpo, though. I don't always support him, but you miss him when he's not on tour.... To make it even more painful, like losing after match points is not enough, Federer is also losing after making a comeback in the game. One set down, match point in the tie-break for DelPo.
