Encourage birds and frogs to the garden. They will really help with some of the insects. Since I put bird baths and feeders in and a few ponds for frogs, I have noticed a decline in insect damage. I sit and watch the birds dive to capture the snails, slugs and moths. You are doing such a wonderful job. ✨

This episode was just what I needed. January, cold New England weather - just placed 3 major seed orders. Watching your joy and excitement plus looking through the old garden of how much you did. I can only imagine the new garden! You’re going to be glowing after all you enjoy cultivating and preserving on the new homestead. Thank you for this channel and for being you! :) my evening show time is Acre Homestead.

Gourd seeds are notoriously hard to germinate. I had about a 50% success rate soaking them in water for 24 hours before planting but a lady in my gardening group said to nip off just the tip of the seed and then soak in chamomile tea for 24 hours. The tannins in the tea help break down the hard outer shell. I did an experiment and did both ways and the tea group came up five days faster and I had an 80% germination rate.

I recently watched a video where someone planted sweet potatoes in his paths as a ground cover. He walked on them all summer. Come fall, he decided to check if maybe a few little sweet potatoes grew despite the abuse and lousy growing medium. There were tons. I definitly want to try that next year. If nothing else, they will be a great ground cover.

Your little bug is called a frog hopper over here. We call the foam cuckoo spit. They don't really do much damage so generally are left to their own devices. If you don't like the foam which protects the younger bug, you can always hose it off but it never destroys the plants that they suck sap so not worth worrying about. Aphids are by far the biggest pest - in my opinion, but once the ecosystem kicks in, they are toast! Slugs and snails are then next biggest pest. Sorry - I'm having a catch up with your postings. Cheers, you are quite the inspirational young lady!

Btw, Jack-Be-Little pumpkins are fully edible! I’m growing them for the first time this year, and I’m planning on using them for decorating for Thanksgiving and Halloween; but, once the fall season is over and it’s time to tear down the decorations, I’m going to try roasting and stuffing them instead of composting like I usually do with other decorative pumpkins and gourds.

Hi Becky. For your brassica you are better to cover the individual bed in a hoop house covered with agribond cover. Its a white mesh. It will keep out the white fly, that absolutely devour the plants. It will also help to keep bigger animals out of that particular bed so it's very cost effective. I really love the way you plant. If you spray your plants with dirty dish water with the dish soap in it, it will help with aphids too. Spray it at night or in the morning for best effect. It worked for me. Take care and all the best. 💞💖

If you don’t have a net already, I’d recommend treating yourself to a good quality black butterfly net to put over your kitchen brassicas. It will blend in nicely if you use a heavy duty 8 gauge wire cut to right size to bend as supports. Might help to keep the mysterious critters off too?

First off Congrats on 100k Becky!!!... I rarely get to comment bc I listen while working, studying or taking a rest during late night hours, but I've been watching you for a month when you around 30k. I'm really happy and somehow very proud of you! Secondly at mark 15:20 (I literally rewards vids😂) you pruning the peppers and tomatoes gave me a whole revelation from God about series of life events! 🙌🏾 Love and appreciate you! Btw your hot sauce vid from today (Sept 15) looks epic and got my wheels turning. When you added your pink Himalayan salt the idea to put a bit of chicken bouillon granules came to mind. Have you ever tried that or do think. I might give it a whirl now that you made that beautiful sauce 🤤😋🌶🧄🫑

I'm guessing a wild critter (skunk, raccoon, rat, or mice) are the things digging for grubs and worms around/in your beds. Since that area seems to get more shade, I think the slugs and snails live in and around those beds and keep decimating all the plants. You could plant some shade loving plants in that area at the back of your property, like hosta, bleeding hearts, fushcias, ferns, calla lily, begonias, etc. Then it will have pretty growing things that will help support pollinators instead of just woodchips. Granted woodchips are a good start, but as they break down you'll need to put more down or the weeds will grow there again if it's not full of plants you want there.

Bunnies and squirrels ate my brassica plants this year after they struggled with the rain and extra cool long spring. Can't win em' all every year. I refuse to fence too. Try some bug netting over brassica to even keep out those ground critters. It is easy and cheaper than building fence. Some rhododendrum bushes under those shade trees against the fence (where you weeded blackberries and mulched) would be a beautiful backdrop to your garden view (and block the view of the neighbors).

We had something eating our greens too and our garden is not anywhere near the size of yours and has a fence around it. Turns out a GROUNDHOG was in munching on our zucchini, tomatoes, etc. Our dog chased it out and now the hubs needs to reinforce the fence and keep the groundhogs out. We have our bush beans in a raised (waste high) bed so the bunnies can't get to them. Bunnies are notorious for eating down our plants. Your garden looks great and you are growing so much! Thanks! The mess what stressing me out and I have a lot more to do but it’s coming along. I’m not sure if they are hard neck onions. I bought them from dicks and dale farm as starts. Like mini onion plants. I thought onions when to seed on their second year....
@amandar7719
@amandar7719 3 жыл бұрын
@@AcreHomestead I thought so too. Which is why I wondered if the seed heads were from your own seed starts. I understood that “seeding/flowering” occurs with soft neck onions only if they sprout during a waning solstice. ie if they sprout when daylight hours are shortening then go dormant and then restarted in soil as the days lengthen. Tbh, my home seeded onions this year were of such poor germination, and struggled so hard in all varieties of poor store bought compost, I can’t imagine they’ll be more than salad onion size by 21 June. Not worth harvesting so tempted to leave them in situ to store, and harvest when/if needed ....😫

I am incredibly late to this but I just wanted to mention that pear trellis rust needs a juniper nearby to overwinter the disease. Without a juniper nearby, you shouldn’t get rust on your pear tree. If you have any junipers on your property that might be the problem. Sorry if this has been mentioned already!

Liquid Fence. For deer and rabbits. Helps and they claim it is organic. You need to use the concentrate. It works better than premade.

I know I’m commenting on older videos (I’m still going through all your stuff like a weirdo since I found your channel! Sorry 😂). But I had no idea that peas did that. I have some peas to plant that I want to try in a small-ish raised bed I have on my balcony but I’m thinking now that may not be wise 😂

My peas are insane this year too. I think it's the crazy warm weather. Mine have never only been 2 feet but they have never been as tall as they are now. I planted a second run of them about a month to 6 weeks ago and they are almost to my belly button. Which is great but my mescaline mix lettuce and my cilantro and my second run of radishes all went to seed. I told my bf and my son that this is the weirdest year I've ever gardened.

Here’s a thought regarding your potatoes that never did anything… I live in New Hampshire and a good friend who has been gardening forever also lives here and he said to me last summer that he didn’t get one potato because field mice ate them underground. Maybe that happened to your potatoes as well, I wonder…. I’m really enjoying seeing all you do! I have a lot going on in my gardens but not as much as you🙃 P.s.you remind me of my oldest daughter she looks so much like you and has your build! But she doesn’t talk as fast as you!

If you plant beans in cool soil they will rot. Also, found out mice love beans and will eat your seeds.

Also, I've not had great germination rates from a few MI Gardener purchases. One of my sweet peppers from them, I tried probably 15 seeds and did not have a single seed germinate. My dragon tongue beans had a decent rate, and one of the cherry tomatoes was so-so, but I've been disappointed by them.

My comment is a bit late but I'm a new subscriber so I've been watching a lot of your videos which I love btw. But about your veggies that got eaten I have read that Irish spring soap sprinkled around veggies is supposed to keep animals from eating your plants cause the smell is off putting. I wonder if your northern beans didn't make it cause they got too much water. Took me three times last year to get beans to grow cause I was overwatering them. Starting on my fall garden this week by following the phases of the moon.
