It's not exactly the same. This squad is about 75% new players. So we lost more and replaced them with kids. That's not including the players we've lost due to injury. Price tag aside. These are kids, no experience playing together, and no experience in the premier league.

You're kidding me right? Have you researched Caicedo's career or are you talking nonsense because it's fun for you? He has won continental championships in South America with Ecuador in 2019 and 2020. He came to the premier League with Brighton when he was 19 years old, got loaned to a Belgian club for a few games and then came back and started dominating at 20. Looked up some of the games he played last season against Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, and you'll appreciate how much of a beast he is in the midfield. There's a reason why Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea all wanted him and submitted offers.

If Caicedo had signed for Liverpool, he’d have been a totally different player. Difference between Chelsea and Liverpool is that Liverpool has clear vision and clear winning strategy. Players like Caicedo has potential but unwise so will always pick the wrong option.

Buying players at hyper inflated prices doesn't make them World Class. Many of these Chelsea players are average players that Chelsea dumped huge transfer fees and salary on. Players like Fernandez, Mudryk, Caicedo are all 25 - 30M players, but look how the market has been distored. People now valuing players like Toney for 80M (a 25M player), Solanke 50M (a 20M player). Carry on.

Enzo is a World Cup winner and Caicedo has been hyped up in south America for years now and was one of the best midfielders in the league last season. The price is that high for them bc they’ve already shown they’re close to world class at such a young age + potential to grow.

Too many clubs look to players to solve everything, but the club environment matters. Brighton is run well, the players are happy and confident, so they play well. How many times have we seen a player look brilliant somewhere else, only to go to Man Utd or Chelsea and suddenly lose all confidence because the environment is toxic. Werner, Sanchez, Mudryk, Di Maria, Sancho, Drinkwater, Cucurella, Emerson, Varane, Andre Onana, Pogba, Ziyech, Caicedo, Lukaku (for both clubs), Morata, Torres, Memphis Depay, Falcao, Schweinsteiger, Donny Van de Beek. Some players like Messi, Ronaldo, and Zlatan will be good no matter where they go, but for most, their performance relies on everything around them.

Michael Owen made a fascinating observation about modern footballers in a recent interview which I agree with. He said unlike the past, many modern players are less technically gifted, but better athletes. We see this with players like Mudryk and Havertz; very athletic, but almost non existent footballing intelligence. These players are so predictable in their movements, there’s next to no exciting combination play & no one-twos. With all the excess inflated money in football now, we are witnessing the game being flooded with extremely average athletes who, with young age, can be transferred around the world for agents to cream massive fees off. It’s a scam market.

There is such a premium put on athleticism these days, that is for certain. Narrowly speaking, they are technically more gifted than players in the past IMO. But if you are just mindlessly following the system drilled by your coach, you are not using your technical skills to their fullest, you are not challenging the opposition to think on their feet.

Exactly. They're all very busy posting gym selfies on social media, but the technique, the passing, the movement etc. just isn't there compared to 20-30 years ago. Players become 'worth 100 million' at the age of 20 and then proceed to achieve almost nothing.

The reason is players just want to be at a "big club" more than they want to be a top player. Players are happy to sit ont he bench and collect medals and not play. Previously you had to work your way into a big club with performances not potential. But thats another failure of ffp. It's made teams obsessed with signing young players to either sell on for big fee or spread fee over 8-10years to meet ffp. Instead of buying a proven player that only gives you maybe 4 years.

In Michael Owen’s day, Jan Molly was drinking ten pints the night before a game. It’s a totally different era and Owen doesn’t know what he’s on about. I wager they are technically good as well but are coached within an inch of their life and so don’t play ‘off the cuff’. That’s because modern football is all about control and any player who did do their own thing consistently would be dropped instantly

@@russellward4624 I was looking over a list of the biggest 25 transfer fees from a few years, and I would rate 30% as flops, 30% as significant disappointments, and only 40% as successful. Paying big money for young players is setting them up for failure. With more seasoned players, you are more certain of what you are getting and they bring more football knowledge with them -- they are less likely to stumble. A lot of fans are quick to rubbish young players when they are not instant superstars. Since when did we stop realizing that players may need experience? Moving up from the Championship to Premiere at age 25-26 should be normal. At Liverpool with its challenges in the midfield last season, a lot of fans were asking harsh questions about whether Curtis Jones (now 22) and Harvey Elliot (now 20) should even be at the club. With one more year under their belt and a bit more fitness, they are both players Klopp has relied on to excellent results. Consider that Jones earns 15k per week and Elliot 40k. Klopp invested a couple patient years transitioning these players in, expecting they would need time to learn the ropes.

I'm not sure the Chelsea comparison with Man Utd is valid here. The starting 11 that Chelsea fielded last night cost £430 million whereas the Utd starting 11 versus Wigan cost £197 million. Caciedo should have went to Liverpool. The problem is, there are bigger expectations on these players at bigger clubs. Klopp would have gradually introduced him into the squad, not throw him in the team and expect him to deliver at that level. people say chelsea started in 2003 when Abramovic came in, thats not true, the reason chelsea have been so good for 20 years was due to the experience singed mid 90's that helped the likes of terry, lampard etc become those players and carry on that leadership, that winning mentality, the likes of wise, zola, desailly, vialli, gullit etc, these young players chelsea have now dont have that. theres no hunger, leadership, winning mentality. a dybala and henderson might be what chelsea need rn

It will be interesting to see what Chelsea does during the transfer window. It is absolutely correct that Chelsea will NOT get their money back. I will be surprised if any high quality team take any of those players. I can only imagine how much Chelsea will sell players for. They will have a "Flea market" sign on their stadium 😂
