What are your thoughts on the Winnebago Boldt? Would you buy one?
@Erin-Thor
@Erin-Thor 4 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility - Again... based on my prior experiences with Winnebago, I would NEVER ever consider buying one. They look great, it’s based on an excellent platform, but I would, could never trust that it was insulated correctly, that the wiring was correctly installed, that the wiring was the correct gauge (meaning I would expect fires. Did Boldt do the installation? GREAT! If Winnebago did, I would guarantee you they used the cheapest wiring and connectors they thought they could get away with.), that the plumbing would last, hell even function. Winnebago's obsession with cheap materials, labor and components, their focus on profits over quality that amounts to blatant efforts of deception, and their lack of concern for the customers that purchase their products, all serve to scare the crap out of me on anything Winnebago. If you gave me one my only goal would be to get away from it as fast as possible.

@Erin Thor - maybe why they only offer a 1 year warranty on this coach?

I agree, Winnebago is slowly improving it’s quality with no staples but they have along way to go to catch up with other premium van builds. To me a 1 year warranty says it all. Love the battery package though.

I would not buy anything that the manufacturer only had enough confidence for only a one year warranty. Looks cheap. For over 100k it has absolutely no WOW. The floor plan does not work for me. I like carrying at least 4 passengers in comfort and safety.

Winnebago should be congratulated for pursuing the four-season coach and going with the Pure3 system--however, I think they may have overreached on price considering Winnebago quality. Still, it's a very interesting new offering and I like their direction. Great job, Neil, on the thorough review. Always insightful comments/observations.

Neil, I enjoy your reviews and your commentary on the pluses and minuses of the various design choices these manufacturers use in their class B van construction. I find your comments by and large to be spot on. What I miss lately is the lack of commentary on build quality. Folks who watch your videos are possibly making a purchase decision that will probably be the biggest expense of their lives outside of their home. For a vehicle at the $150.000 price point build quality is probably the most important single factor as it impacts everything else especially longevity. Of course I know these dealers are not going to let you disassemble their van to get a better look at the innards but any comments you have on apparent build quality are really helpful to those of us who aren't there looking at the van ourselves. Thanks for the great job that you do. I always look forward to these reviews.

@@Ultramobility I recognize that companies like Leisure Travel and Pleasureway have to balance between building a great quality RV and "overbuilding" in a way that reduces sales because of too much increased cost. But it is a real shame that neither of those great companies has created an RV with such an advanced electrical system/four season capability. I love Leisure Travel Vans but up until this year they were still using a 1,000 inverter!! Is it that there are just too few customers willing to pay higher prices that causes manufacturers to use the lowest common denominator? I think that Leisure Travel and Pleasureway make fantastic vehicles, but it's a shame they don't step into the next level space. I'm sure they have done the math and it's not worth it to them. But I still can be disappointed!! I love your videos and am a big fan!! I might even be called an addict regarding your videos. You have such a calm demeanor, abundance of facts and breath of competitive knowledge. Great job all around!!

Great review! I love that you keep using the 5'10" model to gauge room and bed size since I'm 5'10". Good 4 season coach. There's lap belts in the rear but the backs to the seats are very short. Doesn't look like passenger 5 and 6 would ride comfortably. Does the mid seat recline so that someone might be able to catch a few hours of sleep? When we go on long drives my wife will help drive and I like to power nap and be belted in. The rear beds look comfortable as twins. One year warranty??? There's a lot of electronics and things to go bad i wish Winnebago had more confidence in the product. Keep up the good work!

Once again, I agree with your assessment of this RV. Good on Winnebago for the 4-season capability, the elec. sys. (!), and the modest but needed improvements in build quality. But at $150K discounted, I'm gonna shop for a Pleasureway instead. (just wish PW would give us the Boldt's 4-season capability, elec. sys., and compressor fridge).

Great video. Travato has been high on my list, especially the National Parks version, so would be cool if you could compare that version to the Boldt. But this extensive overview of the Boldt was really well done. Definitely like the 4x4 feature. May have to save up a little longer and wait for model year two to see if prices come down at all.

Neil, we just saw the Pleasure Way On Tour 2.0 and the On Tour 2.2, their new models on the Ford Transit chassis at the Hershey RV show 2019. The 2.2 appears to be the sneak peek CanadaDream van that you reviewed 3 months ago. The 2.0 is a shorter 19’8” version that is similar to your Ascent. First, thank you for another awesome review! Winnebago is going in right direction, but at this price point they don’t hit the mark. Awesome bathroom/cabinet design but it appears, to offset the huge investment in premium chassis & awesome lithium system and to be attainable for the maximum number of buyers while maintaining profit margins, Winnebago had to cut cost; BUT these compromises in fit, form and functionality will turn away more buyers than gain. In this price segment, one expects: Double pane glass windows, Larger compressor refrigerator, Larger fresh water tank, Outside & in floor insulated storage (easily done by deleting LP tank using diesel/electric continuous hot water/furnace combo,) plus Redesign passenger eating table & lounge table eating location/system, Reconfigure and Upgrade entire bed system & lounge layout, Insulate & undercoat ALL water tanks, Offer 4+ year comprehensive warranty. A 1 year warranty at this price point shouts “Do Not Purchase”. The competition offers much better ROI, with historically superior in quality, fit, form, functionality, proven reliability and come with 3+ year warranties. Thus for now, it’s a no vote. However, I do give Winnebago highest praise for going in the correct direction with an awesome lithium power system and finally addressing market need & demand for a true 4 season coach in this class. With significant refinement plus a 4+ year warranty, Winnebago will not only lead the competition, they will set the standard for all to follow for years to come. If not, Winnebago will have yet another missed opportunity in the high end markets.

I know many 59K Travato buyers love the layout you reviewed but always ask about fridge size. In the Boldt, large propane tank and lithium batteries clearly tell you - take this van and be out in the wild for a week. The fridge size does not align with this idea very well. it would not bother me but some buyers will ask the question. There is no mounting point for a custom table between the beds - that could have been very easy to include and then allow customers to add the table size they like. Looking at the sink I would have to add some kind of splash guard to prevent water escaping onto the seat. I did not see if this is the Truma controller which is enabled for phone app access. That would be a nice feature. I wish they would engineer a nice collapsible footrest that can come standard for use between the beds and also to help an elderly person climb into the coach - that would be a nice touch. The control pads for the different systems seem scattered around the coach - I would love to see them all in one place and protected by a dark tint cover that only allow emergency red lights to be seen. Anyway with these little quirks this clearly is the most feature packed MB 3500 chassis RV. It is expensive but if you were to spend the $150k this is probably the most value and features you can buy for your money.

Neil: Great review on the whole. I like to idea of the power system being able to run the A/C without the generator for a long period. Adds a lot to the stealth factor when in the city also. I think I would be more inclined to buy the BL model with a better front lounge, extra three-point belt, and can open the back door to the ocean (for instance). The solar system has a connector on the side so you can park your rig in the shade and set up some light-weigh panels in the sun and connect them. What adds to the price is the MB package and the Pure system. As I understand the construction used for this rig from other videos, the cabinetry is very well made and the insulation is CVC cut. After reading a lot of the comments I think past experiences with Winnebago has caused some negative bias not applicable to this unit. However, I agree the one-year warranty is scary. I hope you will also get a chance to review the BL model when it becomes available. Thanks.

Well if you like having to completely make and un-make the bed every day, use up precious storage for bedding when not sleeping, stumble over a goofy looking mis-aligned made up bed to get from the galley/front seating to the bathroom, have minimal benefit from the expensive rear doors, have awkward access to the minimalist refrigerator, awkward access to the microwave, little consideration for how to use the vertical space that is available, have a one year warranty that doesn’t cover much anyway, and way over-pay for what it is, then it is just great.

Thanks for your review of the Bolt. This was the exact one I referred to in your last review. Great job bringing out its value and capacity all the way around with electric and storage/appliances etc. I didn’t like the bed at all because even if you make it as large as possible sleeping/snuggling with your partner looks awful. 😆 I like the layout on the back twin bed model better. Maybe in the future you’ll find one to review. It seems more practical but that’s just from seeing the floor plan. It’s definitely a nice 4 season contender. But Winnebago cheaped out with that low end warranty and no roadside assistance. They need to listen to the market because if they’re not willing to back it with a decent warranty of at least 3 years that shows what they think about what they built. I know that’s their CFO telling them to do that but that’s no way to make this coach a leader in the market. Big negative 👎 on my end as a consumer. Marketing needs to do more testing and interviews. Other than that, another great review Neil!

Under every definition I can find, a "Twin Bed" is 38" - 39" wide, NOT 26". Therefore these beds are only as wide as a prison cot, which (according to the Department of Corrections) are 27" wide, or 30" in handicapped cells. The manufacturers use the term "Twin Bed" very loosely, to them it just means there are two places to sleep! I modified my small RV to take out one of the "twin beds," put in an actual 39" bed, and put cabinets and storage where the other bed was.

Nice layout but it does have a few problems. I’m more interested in a full time bedroom at the back. Not having to prepare a bed every day is great. With this layout Access to the bathroom is limited and require crossing over the bed to get at it. For weekend camping it would be ok but not for full time van life. But with the standard battery and water, wast tanks plus storage makes this a killer base platform to build on. I’m sure the inverter has a True Sine-Wave output, I think feature should be noted in your equipment list. Once again thanks for this review

Very nice review, thank you. It was cool that you decided from the get go to compare and contrast Boldt to Travato, as Winnebago certainly took Travato design as a starting point for Boldt retrofitting. Agree with most of your points. Would add that I expected a bit more luxury touches given the price point. Also when you compared (nearly identical) electrical systems in Boldt and Travato, you forgot to mention that Winnebago could not implement AutoStart in Boldt due to Mercedes rejection. This point raised a lot of discussion on the forums as there is no good way to replenish battery in boondocking scenario. Solar panels would be lucky to just counteract parasitic draw caused by Volta electronics. Battery capacity is huge, but only until you decide to run the AC, which may only last one day before you are tapped out and need to break a camp and go on the 2-3 hour highway ride to recharge batteries from the engine.

Are you sure? I'd be shocked if it was not able ti charge the battery at idle, whether or not a high idle is provided. Modern alternators seldom need more than idle rpm to generate good current.
@user-ym6lc7pk1e
@user-ym6lc7pk1e 4 жыл бұрын
Barry Timm If Volta uses the same alternator as in Travato, then low idle won’t work. Travato owners reported that even driving around at low speed did not provide sufficient charging to the batteries. Only going at highway speeds resulted in a quick recharging. At low idle batteries will be recharging, but very slow.

@@user-ym6lc7pk1e That's weird. Perhaps due to the huge size of those Lifepo4 batteries? They are 3-5 times larger than most optional LFP upgrades from other manufacturers, where the usual size is 200-300ah while this coach's LFP bank is nearly 1000ah, so it will take a lot longer to charge than what is considered "normal". FWIW, 1000ah of LFP will run nearly $10k for the batteries by themselves, without that large 3.6kw inverter, so this coach's extra alternator, solar, inverter and battery system is likely a $12k cost to build at wholesale pricing and $15k or so retail pricing. It does help explain the high cost of these vans!

Hate the one year warranty but that electrical system is a game changer. 16 gallons of propane will last a LONG time only being used for heat. I'd probably go with the BL floor plan. Add the drop down bed with kick out's from the revel and this is home run. Would definitely choose the 4x4 option, no point in 4 season capability if you can't get there or are constantly worried about getting up that next hill. I'd really just like Winnebago to add this electrical system to the Revel to be quite honest.

As always a great review. I agree with many that the price is REALLY high. But... What's missing in all of these and especially on the larger class C's is outdoor cooking. Great that they've given us awnings... now let's follow up with some clever (see what the Australians have done!!) outdoor kitchen ideas. Start thinking outside the box!. Give me a good place to eat, sleep and drive on the inside and a great place to cook & clean on the outside.

Like on a class A, where you can unplug the induction cooktop and plug it in outside? A good space-saving solution versus carrying a more traditional BBQ grill? That table on the passenger side can swing out and be lowered for outside use, too.
@woodybailey
@woodybailey 4 жыл бұрын
@@douglastong3208 Agreed. However if we go the induction route... which I support though I'm a gas flame fan currently... we need to address power via solar panels. They should be part of the plan.. not an option. I don't want to have to "hook up" every time or burn my propane (diesel) on my generator just to cook (that and all the associated noise). Generators are great, but it defeats the purpose of induction cooking if you're burning fuel (and making noise) just to cook. Up the battery game and give it some solar support that is robust and you've got my attention. Also the pull out kitchen slides (outdoor) rather than the class A "alcoves" make more sense when considering smoke, grease, fire etc.. Check out the Conqueror trailer. Australian ex-military engineers got the kitchen right!. How about a cabinet (with locks) on the outside?. Open up the shallow cabinet and viola.. spices, kitchen tools, wine... ?? Just say'n

Excellent Review. On the surface the Boldt has all the features I like to see...MBZ chassis, 4x4, solar, etc etc. All looks very attractive. But when scratching the surface and upon inspection it’s still a Winnebago with little or no quality control, poor fit and finish, plastic hinges and latches and with maintenance prone electrical and plumbing systems. At least it does not have a slide out. But the 1-year Winnebago warranty does not build confidence. Match the MBZ 4-year Warranty and it will be worth another look. The quality must meet the price.

See I actually kinda like this now that you break it down. I was really deterred by the “bed” originally but when you said 81” length bed I was shocked, that’s awesome, but looks bland and awkward still. Ideally I would use that as my bed and the other side as a sleeping section. The bathroom, WOW, HUGE, and EXTRA HANGING CLOSET, that’s a big deal for me. I will have to deduct points for the latch fridge, and I’m not liking the finish of the cabinets, the IROK cabinetry is gorgeous. And I’m not sure which I prefer. I am a performance buyer I would say when it comes to RVs but certain qualities in an rv can be eye sores in my mind. I was most impressed with the LITHIUM battery storage and standard solar panels, huge plus, especially because I want a Ring security system installed in my RV and I will need plenty of power to keep my internet and security system going. Still might have to get and aftermarket energy system depending on the vehicle and features. 7/10 overall score.

hi everyone - thanks for the discussion and let's try to be kind to one another. No One Special, i think tillallareoneluv said it right: a 1 year warranty is a reflection of the manufacturers confidence in their build out. for every year that they add to the warranty the coach has to either hold up or the manufacturer has to add repair dollars to every unit sold to cover repair costs down the road. since winnebago is not willing to give a longer warranty it means a) they don't have confidence in the quality of the build out to last beyond a year and b) they are unwilling to allocate funds for each unit sold to cover repairs past a year.

As someone with contacts in the industry have you ever had the chance to speak with Winnebago to find out why they don't want to budge when their competitors offer 2 and 3 year warranties , some with roadside assistance? Firstly Winnebagos sales (goto NIRVC youtube/Newmar purchase for more accurate info) are down 30%, as is a lot of the industry. So the warranty may be a function of this. I actually don't get the lounge/bed floorplan. I don't need to feel like a 5-year old that can't get comfortable on a seat that is made for adults. The floorplan doesn't work for me. I think for the money it should offer Espar diesel hydronic heating, a large fridge and gold toliet;). Another thing of note is that from my understanding the latches are prone to wear and as degrade quickly. Also, the dual-pane acrylic windows don't provide that much more insulation and are definitely not worth the hefty upgrade price. Winnebago has also done mid-cycle upgrades on the 2020.5 Travado which are significant Go to Lichtsinn to see about such and Ron's voice is not in that horrible carny mode for this video.

There’s a REASON why Winnebago only provides their coach with a one year warranty, they KNOW it is going to fall apart. Winnebago's are not built to last beyond the warranty period, the ones I owned started fall apart at the one month mark and got worse month by month. Your apprehension about the warranty is warranted (no pun intended). They may have licensed the Boldt name, put it on a Mercedes chassis, but it is still a Winnebago product. Did that shower pan seem like it was solid or did it flex and crack under your feet? Even the way they used a shower curtain on that shower area scares me knowing the Winnebago mindset. Why spend money putting plastic panels on the cabinets, the bathroom door and back door, when it only has to last 12 months? Neil, I dare you to tour a Winnebago manufacturing facility, LOL! Please add that to your project list! They may actually use plywood for cabinets instead of glue and staples for this coach, but that won’t help if they are barely glued to the coach walls. On both of my Winnebago's the cabinets started falling apart in the first month. And yes, they would re-staple them, re-glue them, but they used so little glue and the absolute thinnest staples on the original construction it was almost comical. Edit, sorry if I seem negative. Great video, excellent presentation! Maybe Winnebago is trying to improve, but my experiences with their products has soured me on the company for life. Their products actually scare me.

Nice review. Short warranty is disappointing, but I think, anyone willing to spend this much money on a coach can afford to buy extended warranty. As for short warranty being a reflection of manufacturer little confidence in their built, this has not been proven. In fact, looking at other Winnebago class B vehicles, their reliability in year 2, 3 and beyond is no better or worth then other players in this space. Their Travato RVs have been very reliable for the customers, Volta electrical system is probably the best engineered solution out there, so goes for Truma heating and hot water system. They use quality components for their refrigerator, A/C and other appliances, so I would not be hesitant to go on the road in this RV.
