First off thanks for sticking with AMC power in your jeep. Also, the thin wall cast AMC V8 started in 66 and ended in 91. I had a 343 in my 73 gremlin I had years ago. I have a 74 gremlin now and it had a 360 in it with 343 heads. That was a trick back in the day to bump up compression. it now has a way radical new AMC 360 in it.

HOWdy CRASHER, Thanks for the AMC V-8 CONTENT my favorite configuration is the 343ci 4-bbl Pistons & Rods in the taller DECK 360ci BLOCK & CRANK = which gives the engine approximately 11:1 Compression Ratio COOP the WiSeNhEiMeR from Richmond, INDIANA ...

My most recent 360 build had a similar issue. Mine was a failure during cam break in. It bypassed the oil and that starved the rear cam bearing. This drives the camshaft forward and thus the distributor gear and the camshaft gear grind each other up to the point that there are no teeth to mesh and therefore there is no timing. And lots of metal in the engine as well. This was the first AMC engine I have had this issue with. I think this is the 8th on I have rebuilt.

Love the DUAL-PORT OFFY but prefer the Spread-Bore HOLLEY version of the Dual-Port thus matching the tiny PRIMARY side of the Carburetor to the Tiny Primary in the Dual Port & the >More massive Secondary side of the CARB to the >MUCH Larger SECONDARY portion of the Intake Manifold ... IMHO ... ... COOP ...

Sweet video and like the time you spent on the engine. most AMC videos are less then 60 seconds. Keep up the great work. OH 250/287/327 first gen... 66-69-290/343/390 second gen... 70 ^ 304/360/390/401 are 3dr gen. Third gen is taller and wider than earlier 2nd gen. Also 3rd gen has 1/2 head bolts compared to 7/16. Minor AMC trivia. Hey I'm a AMC/Jeep guy through and through. I've had 30 + cars & trucks all AMC. Got a 59 American 2dr wagon a 70 AMX and a 70 Javelin. all AMC powered but Chevy does make a dang nice engine they only suck when there put in a Jeep/AMC. I'll be rebuilding my 70 390 soon back to mostly stock configuration other than cam and valve train and some oil journal work to help flow. good luck on project.

Awesome Vid. Love the (mostly) correct info on AMC engines. But @3:35 you forgot to mention the "Deck Height" changes they made from 2nd gen to 3rd gen engines(Note: "70" 390 has different specs than the "68-69" 390). AMC got the extra cubes from stroke, not bore. Your setup looks good for low-end torque. Short duration cam, duel plane intake(I used to use the Edelbrok "Performer"), and shorter stroke than a "360" should give you some good climbin' power. The exhaust manifolds are "74" or newer(non-Califorina). They have the air injection ports. As much as I love the original AMC engine color, that Chrysler blue is gonna look good in that Jeep. Your Vid gave me warm feelings. I miss my AMC's. @19:31. A funny story. My buddy(who was a complete dickhead) rebuilt a "360" to go in his "258" equipped "71" Javelin. Though he rebuilt the block downstairs, he left the timing cover out in the shed over the winter. Once fully assembled and installed in his newly detailed engine compartment, we topped off the fluids and fired it up. The PRV(pressure relief valve) seized in the aluminum housing after sitting all winter and in about 2 sec's, the oil filter gasket blew out and spewed oil all over his pretty new engine compartment. Had to hold back the laughter. Thought to myself "I guess dickheads do get paybacks". If you ever race an AMC V-8, make sure you run an Aux oil line to the rear mains or they will oil starve. Growing up in Kenosha Wi., I've owned a lot of AMC products and a few Rambler's as well. Can anyone suggest a website where AMC lovers can get together? I'm not a social butterfly by any means, but would love to hook up with other American Motors fans.

290-390 were actually 2nd generation engines by amc. The 1st generation was the 250-287 and 327 rambler v8. The 327 came out about 5 years before Chevy had there 327.

You are absolutely right, I got te memory of a goldfish and forgot when I made the video. Thanks for the correction! Those 1st gen v8s were totally different block configuration vs the typhoons correct?

@@johnnycrash343 No problem. I am currious how this turns out. I agree with the offy dual port as the best torque manifold. I am just not sure about the cam as it is way larger than what the factory cam was. Hope it works out ok.

@@MegaJavelin1970 well check out my channel and there is another video of it in the Jeep running and a walk around and ridealong and stuff. It's freaking SASSY! And the valve train all works great. I called comp, told em what I'm doing and what I wanted and they sent the entire valvetrain minus pushrods to make it all work.

You can get a ton of torque out of a 343 "Typhoon". They did the right thing and ditched the Borg Warner auto and started buying torque flites in '72. The 343 will really run.

Heck yeah, them things are torque monsters. I've twisted more lead springs than I can count with it and destroyed 2 driveshafts and 2 sets of chromoly axles

How much did you spend on this rebuild? Im mostly curious about the top end cost with the rollers. Machine work done just for that? I love the idea of not having to worry about wiping the cam lobes if things don't go smooth during break-in

Hey Johnny, what push rods did u use and what rockers and then you pre load then like a small block chevy ? My heads are the good ones with screw in studs and did u use guide plates? I have the sun 8601 this is my frist AMC Just A Little lost Like u still learning.

Na the bell housing will work on all AMC engines. Just had to put the correct size pilot bushing in the crank
