I arrive at London Heathrow Airport for my first ever trip to Europe. Watch this video to see how I navigate from the airport to Central London via public transportation. I also go through immigration, customs, claim my luggage, and experience Severe Delays on the Elizabeth Line.

One reason for the long walk in the airport (which is true is a lot of the larger airports) is to give the workers there time to unload your luggage. If the walk was short, you would have had to wait 10-15 minutes at baggage claim until your luggage arrived. They actually researched this, and found out people reported a more positive experience with a longer walk (where they are doing something with some purpose) than when they just waited around for their luggage at baggage claim, doing nothing but getting more frustrated with the wait.

9:56 as someone that worked for Thameslink in London a few years ago, hearing someone talking about the TfL caps and getting a good strategy for using the Elizabeth Line (so the rest of your tubes and buses for that day are effectively free) warmed my heart. Nicely researched. I do recommend that people traveling in from overseas buy a Visitor's Oyster Card preloaded with funds for the week (Transport for London will mail it to you if you do it a few weeks ahead of time) so you can get straight through the barriers and onto that public transportation.

@@RWFAN184 - the Visitor version is only available for people buying it online from out of the country (£5, plus whatever amount you pre-load onto it). It looks different from any other Oyster Card, so it's a collector's item. And there are a load of restaurants and museum gift shops where you get a deal nobody else can get. Discounts off purchases, free drinks with the purchase of a regular a la carte meal when you show the Card. Things like that. My wife and I got way more than £5 worth of freebies each when we last went in 2018, and we still have the Oyster Card for the next time we go to London (where we can get even more discounts and freebies).

NYC subway fare gates work in both directions, hence our host's confusion. Depending on where you are going to in London the Piccadilly line can be about as fast as the Elizabeth line. The Elizabeth line and the Heathrow express use overhead wire power while all the tube trains use third rail power.

I always appreciate you do extensive and unedited videos, so other travelers can be informed about the directions and what should be done. The customs and luggage claim processes were so quick. The train car looks so new, modern, and clean, and it runs smoothly and quietly despite the delays. It's not easy to make videos while lugging your belongings, especially being unfamiliar in a new destination. 👍 I'm glad you had a safe flight, and thank you for sharing this informative video, AK! You're the BEST! 🤗

Great video and also useful to anyone visiting from overseas for the first time. That storm that delayed your train (named Storm Ciaran) was actually the worst ever here in northwest France. Highest recorded wind speed was 207km/h (128mph). That was 11 days ago but there are still 10k households without power, lots of roads still blocked, roofs gone. My shed exploded and we lost 7 trees but it was also a fascinating thing to live through. The power of nature is amazing.

I'm a dual national, born in the UK (most of my family still there), currently live in the US. I'm from Reading in the UK, which actually is at the very western end of the Elizabeth line. It's so interesting to see someone experience London for the first time and navigate on a transport system I'm intimately familiar with. I hope you enjoyed your time there! If you ever return and you have a particular interest in London's trains visit the London Transport Museum (closest station Covet Garden on the Picadilly Line.) The underground is the oldest metro system in the world, and the recent history of London in many ways IS the history of the Underground. Safe travels!

I found this video very interesting. I was brought up and lived very close to the rail line so I was able to follow the journey in great detail recognising many of the buildings along the way though a lot of them are new. I worked at Heathrow in the 1970s when it was growing fast but compared to now it was much more compact and simpler back then. Now living in Australia I don’t visit very often but find Heathrow quite a challenge to navigate through all the underground walkways and somewhat confusing signage. One aside, for anyone wondering, the collection of old steam locomotives and carriages you passed along the way are at the old Southall engine sheds which was once one of the main GWR loco depots but is now the base for some historic rail preservation groups.

The only indication that a service may be delayed is shown at 29:55. Wish they publish the status of the Underground, Overground, DLR and Elizabeth somewhere so that travellers have options. The Transport for London (TfL) website is a good indicator and updates every 30 seconds, but how about those going to the UK temporarily who's phone is not capable of using internet/phone calls outside the country of residence. Clearly out of all the TFL lines (including Overground, DLR and Elizabeth but excluding buses), the Elizabeth is the one which expeirenced the most unplanned delays/cancellations. But most importantly, I love that this shows an indication of how long it would take from entering the airport to London which includes a 10 minute stop but excludes passport control.

This is why I prefer flying into Gatwick airport when i visit the Uk instead of Heathrow from Canada. It’s a much more straightforward airport where there’s a simple mini-train to take you between the two terminals and the main Train station to central London is right there. You take the “Thameslink” train. You don’t have to walk so much. I’ve visited the Uk 4 times now, most recently this past June. It’s funny how you got confused too by the word “calling” on trains, on my first visit to the UK in 2017 that tripped me up too, yes it’s the same as “stopping”. 😁

Just to point out that what you referred to as "Customs" is known as Immigration/Passport Control in the UK (and much of the rest of the world outside of the US). It's the part of the process that's concerned with who's coming in to the country. Customs is concerned with what you're bringing in to the country, and is the area where you choose between the red (goods to declare) or green (nothing to declare, but you may get singled out for a random search) channels.

Long past trip to London, highlights were a boat ride down the Thames to Greenwich for a walk around. Also a day trip to Bath. October and days were a little longer than now. I took the tubes or busses and a couple of night went across London back from a late night in the East End, to Earl's Court area, by night bus. One great sight I loved but did not plan, was going S thu Hyde Park, passing Albert Memorial at twilight, then around the Albert Hall and in Knightsbridge to pass Harrods.

The Elizabeth line is a regular line and the same as all the others in the tube system. Because when it was built it used pre-existing tunnels belonging to a private company, that company charges for its use. This charge gets passed on to passengers as a surcharge - hence the higher than usual fare. Nowhere else in the tube system does this happen.

I flew from SFO to Heathrow late last August. I just kept following the yellow signs and realized that we went under a taxiway/ramp for much of the way before coming back up to the customs area. While it took a while to get through all that, having my bag already on the carousel was nice. I took the Piccadilly line into the city, switching to the Circle Line to get to Aldgate, my end destination. Piccadilly wasn't air conditioned and it was quite warm (for London) that morning. It wish I'd seen this video before that trip as it would have given me a good idea of what to expect. My return to LHR was also a bit of a mess. I only made it two stops on the Underground before the driver announced that we were waiting for an unknown amount of time due to a trespasser on the tracks well ahead of us. He recommended switching to another line, if possible, to get to your destination. I had a Tube Map app on my phone which helped me figure out the alternatives and I ended up on the Elizabeth line, the only other line going to the airport. But even that didn't go smoothly as a train broke down ahead of us and ours was truncated at Hatton Cross (I think). After a bit of a wait, another train came along that was going through to Heathrow. I was only going to my hotel for my flight out the next morning, but some people were trying to catch a flight still that night and were a bit nervous! It was a long day as I started it in Germany, had a canceled DB train from Cologne to Brussels to deal with and still make my Eurostar, then the issues getting from St Pancras to Heathrow, but I made it. I had ordered a Visitor's Oyster card ahead of time and I'm glad I did. It might not save anything on fares, but it does offer discounts to some London attractions, and it was convenient. Unfortunately, you can't add money to it, or check your balance online, only at a ticket machine in a station. Not sure why that restriction exists, but it would be nice if it didn't exist. With it you avoid exchange fees from US banks that you might have using a contactless card, or your phone. That wouldn't be an issue for UK banks, but it might be for US banks.

This shows how vast London Heathrow is! Never be fooled by the size of our small island in comparison to the USA - Heathrow is one of the busiest in the world! Glad you used public transport instead of UBER or a Taxi; the Airport is miles out of the City! The signs DID TELL YOU what the individual lifts/elevators were for. You can't get much clearer than 'Car Parks' 'Buses' and 'Taxis' with the bigger sign telling you where the lifts for 'Trains/Tube' were situated. Trust me when I tell you that flying into New York from the UK takes a damn sight longer just to clear Customs etc.

I totally agree. That's a lot of walking through tunnels. It's all a series of long modern, minimalist mazes or tunnels. Admittedly it is all lighted or illuminated with cool LED ads . Still, it would be somewhat claustrophobic.

That's pretty quick really - on the train in 40 minutes. Immigration can take MUCH longer if you arrive at a busy time and it's not uncommon to wait an hour for your bag too. I thought that was a pretty good advert for Heathrow, overall. I think he was just unlucky to arrive at the furthest gate from the baggage claim. The walking distances are long because it's a 70+ year old airport that's been remodelled many times. We don't tend to just demolish everything and start again like in the US although terminal 2 is totally new. The train station serves three different terminals (well only two at the moment) from one station so it's not directly situated in ANY of them. Also as new lines are added they naturally have to be built deeper/further away - it's no coincidence that he came to the Underground first!

If you ever need to travel to and from London Gatwick Airport and London Victoria Station don't take the Gatwick Express as it is more expensive than other normal 'Southern' trains and the journey is almost just as speedy by them. You can then also change at Clapham Junction for many other stations including London Waterloo so depending on your destination it could be just as quick or even quicker too. You can also get a Thameslink train to London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon, and Kings Cross/Saint Pancras and beyond direct from Gatwick. Again depending on your destination you may find this route more suitable for your needs.

Quite an ordeal to get from your gate to where the train is, more than 30 minutes when adding the short wait at Customs. But at least they have customer service reps in the airport to direct you. Today I got my hair cut and the stylist was a girl whose family lives in Ireland. She goes to Ireland a few times a year. She mentioned she flies into Ireland then takes a short flight over but when she visits because she has been to London so many times she never visits London anymore. She mentioned London is expensive. Someone in the shop also mentioned you're not supposed to touch the guards at the palace just like you mentioned it in your first London video. 😀 The stylist also mentioned people use an app to pay for busses and kids take public busses to school or walk. Apparently, the app is loadable so you can add money to it.

Visited the UK first time last year, fortunately have a friend who lives there and was able to guide me through all the intricacies of using public transport. There is a lot to take in when you’ve never seen such a broad range of public transport. I will say one of the things that threw me off about using the lifts is the numbering system. It is different than in the U. S. What would be listed as a ground floor or number 1 here is typically numbered zero and anything down below that they use a negative number. I also went to Germany through Brussels and realized that is how Europe works. One of many different things you need to learn when you’re traveling abroad out of United States. I ended up traveling both directions through terminal 5 and it is much easier to get in and out of the airport through the terminal on rail.

You got off easy with the walk to Customs and Reclaim. At Paris-CDG, Terminal,2 is subdivided into what feels like several smaller terminals. You may clear Passport Control where you land, but all baggage is brought to Terminal 2a, so you’re herded in that direction and may have to board a people-mover/light rail vehicle.

When I was at Heathrow Airport many years ago I saw Troy Aikman who was the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. I've been to the United Kingdom twice. The first time was in 2000 and again in 2004. What I remember about our visit to a British pub is the cigarette smoke being very thick. There is another airport in London that I have been to which I believe is called Gatwick.

Tip on sim cards: You can get one from local carriers in London at a shop. Carriers are O2, Orange, Virgin Mobile; shops are typically in/near shopping districts (malls or high street areas). Unless recently changed the SIM is free, you just add funds for the prepaid service (it may be called credits). This might work better than some of the online sites. I been doing this since 2009.
