100%. It's all about the balance sheet and accounting. Let's take the Phil Jones case. The way players are valued in the clubs books is that you take the total wages over the length of their contract and this is their value. Let's say you pay Phil Jones £10m a year on a 5 year contract. Phil Jones is now £50m (5 x 10) on the balance sheet. At the end of the first year of his contract, there's only £40m left to pay over the remaining 4 years, so his value is marked down to £40m. United have lost £10m. At the end of the 2nd year of his contract, there's only 3 years left at £10m a year, so he's worth £30m... BUT United give him a new 5 year contract on £20m a year. Instead of a £10m loss this year, United have made a £70m "profit". Let's say you can sell him for £15m. Let's also say you're the glazers and you have the choice between the £70m "profit", or a £25m loss (40m at end of 2nd year -15m sale price). Do you choose the 70m profit or the loss? This also applies to when we buy players, let's say we buy a player for 50m and pay him 60m over a 5 year contract. The fee for the player is spread out over each year of their contract, so United say they cost £10m per year. In the first year they spent £10m and get a £60m asset... That's a £50m "profit" by buying and overpaying a player, and the "profit" gets bigger the more they overpay the wages!!! Yes eventually the club will run out of cash and go bankrupt, but the glazers don't give a damn and will cream the sweet, sweet money off the top.

@@joeberesford5015 bankers got the hold of our club, everyone crying about players wages but we were paying huge wages to Rooney and co when they were here, yes we won trophies but our income was way less yet wages were never a problem, I wouldn’t be surpsurprised if our wages were pretty much the same they were 11 years ago throughout the squad!

One correction: "The Glazers spend a lot of the club's money" but I agree with all three points. The first point is crucial that a lot of fans seem to ignore and yet seem to ponder why the quality of football drops when Ten Hag subs players from the first team off or they get injured. You can say that he signed Hojlund, Antony, Onana, blah, blah, blah etc. but the system needs 22 players with similar profiles in each position or at least subs that can bring in new dimensions/energy to any game, we don't have that because it's a patchwork squad of players from different systems vastly different to Ten Hag's one or just emergency loans/free agents coming in to fill a gap.

What about Modric and Benzema? 2 years ago when they were both mid 30s and older than both Varane and Casemiro they were being rated as some of the best players in the world in their positions for that season. 59 goal involvements for Benzema in 21/22 when he was 33/34. Modric won the balon d'or at 33 5 years ago. Age isn't really the issue here when you're 30-35, unless you're a winger although some wingers adapt very well like Giggs... it's ability and it always has been.

My original point with casemiro and varane was that their ability has dropped because of the mileage in their bodies and not because they're too old

Then don't. We attracted Bruno on a much lower wage, and he has been our best signing of the last decade. You don't have to sign big-name players. In fact, we outright shouldn't. Name a single big name signing that has worked out for us since Fergie left. Again, we haven’t competed for the league in 10+yrs. We’re a Europa League side, chasing Champions league qualification and it is only due to the size of the club that we could spend on transfers like we did. Held to ransom by so many players and their agents, we paid for players to help us get into 4th place. When fans cry and complain about us missing out on “the managers 1st choice signings” and having to settle for 3rd or 4th options, the answer is very simple - why would that 1st choice see us as a good choice other than money. Why would Kane choose us over Munich? Why would any player in their prime choose 8th place United over any other top European side, other than money?

The way Utd treated De Gea a legend of the club was a real disgrace .
