Had the pleasure of meeting Richard and Graham. Took me for a ride in the beetle. 70mph up a hill with 4 of us in the car was surreal. This car would be perfect for city slickers in London. Zero congestion charge and way cooler than any modern offerings. Great episode in the Elan valley. A beautiful hidden gem of mid Wales. Well done Robert, Richard, Graham and the production team.

would it be possible to fit an old style beetle roof rack with solar panels and have it charge or top up the batteries
@ElectricClassicCars
@ElectricClassicCars 7 жыл бұрын
Technically you could do that, but practically I don't think it would be worth it. The extra weight and drag would also seriously impact the benefit of a solar panel on the roof.
@pugnut403
@pugnut403 7 жыл бұрын
if you lived in a sunny area and usually drive only a few miles a day in slow speed city traffic it would be an excellent idea. at high speed the drag would kill range. a panel would add maybe 5 miles of range on a good sunny day so if you drive a lot it would be a waste of time and money. but if you live in the inner city and drive 3 miles to work then it would probably add enough range to have you recharging it 3 or 4 times a year....

@@michelangelobuonarroti916 - Well, it is a LITTLE safer than the original, lol. In the original, your crash protection was a spare tire and the fuel tank. Now it's a spare tire and a battery pack! But to be fair, VW's are pretty nimble, and the ones with disc brakes are pretty darn good at stopping. I've stopped quicker than modern cars on several occasions. Our Ghia has been in use for almost half a century, and the only major incident was when it was hit in the rear fender while filming the movie Zebrahead.

You can't just replace the engine with a conversion, because the engine bay doesn't have enough space for the motor, battery and the motorcontroller. (I know it can be done, but until energy density in batteries goes up, it isn't efficient). New cars have the batteries build into the chassis so it has more batteries and can go much longer on one charge.

From already being a massive fanboy, I am falling more in love with this program as more unusual and diverse stories emerge. As a classic car dork, this episode has particular pertinence, as it reimagines the classic as a realistic proposition as a daily driver. A petrol 60s car is a) too unreliable and b) would be ruined by daily commuter use, but with an electric drivetrain, it finally makes sense.

I wish there was an EV that had like a little thumbwheel on the shifter where you could continuously adjust the regen braking to maintain a constant speed downhill (or for whatever you need). Toyota hybrids have a "B mode", that's useless.
@Astravall
@Astravall 7 жыл бұрын
Hmm .. why a thumbwheel? I manage to adjust the regen breaking with the 'acceleratorpedal' of my BMW i3. I can adjust the regen breaking seamlessly between the pedal position for cruise (with slightly below that beeing light regen breaking) and let the foot off the pedal (which represents hardest possible regen breaking). Everything between can be adjusted seamless which i use quite often to maintain constant speed downhill.

What the Morgan EV3 showed me was that vintage design accommodates an electric powertrain rather well if the designer behind it is talented and enthusiastic enough to do it properly. Though perhaps not on the baja beetle, as a very specific case. Someone once said about that thing that the poorer the condition they're in, the better they look.
@krashd

brian, if you were turning a Beetle in to a Baja Bug you would have to stick a bigger engine in it or it defeats the purpose.

Wonder how much it costs to do? I've got a Citroen 2cv, it works just fine for now, but if the day comes when the flat twin cylinder engine shits itself out of the bottom of the car, I'd love it if something like this could be done to it for around the same price as an engine rebuild. Though I suspect it probably costs about as much as it did to buy my car in the first place.

it can be done on the cheap, but it really depends on your expectations for the finished product, speed, range etc. the cheapest car conversion to my knowledge, look up forkenswift. a 2cv would be very cool
@Munkenba
@Munkenba 7 жыл бұрын
shederickk Realistically the specs would have to match those of the beetle in the video. The 2cv is a lot lighter, so that might make it easier, but it's still going to be an expensive conversion in today's prices. Oh well, the engine in it is delightful anyway, maybe 10 years down the line this sort of conversion will be a lot cheaper.

Some numbers and nerdery would have been nice. What motor, controller, batteries. They talked about the power output of the original engine but not the new one. Well, we got the 0-60 time, but not the motor power output. I know this sort of nerdery is not really the point of Fully charged, but a bit more detail wouldn';t do any harm. Guess I'll have to wade through diy-electric-car.com instead.

Is that the sound of the electric motor or the whine of Adolf Hitler spinning in his grave at high RPM? Lovely cinematography on this top marks to the team! Deutsche Marks.

This is exactly what I thought about for a long time. There are absolutely beautiful classic cars out there, but they all sound like tractors and spit out a lot of pollution. I'd be happy to have one that's electric. Bring a new life to old cars!

This is really cool, but my e type will never be going electric, it would remove a massive chunk of the cars character, the pure roar of the XK6 engine, and I love the sound of air cooled VWs and 911s. I think making them electric kind of defeats the point of them being classic cars. My vision of the future would be all modern cars electric but petrol heads and enthusiasts run a petrol classic as a hobby which wouldn't be a bad thing because their isn't many in the road.

The whole point of the RX7 using Rotary engine is to keep the car light. With the electric conversion it'll totally defeat that purpose.

jeff belli slack I think internal combustion still have at least 20 years left before getting completely phased out or banned (at least in the US). By the time ICE engines are banned, battery tech are probably much better than what we have now, so probably it can give you reasonable range with less weight than what we have now.
