I am grateful to your colleagues for pressing the point. If you hadn’t tried the second test, I would have wondered if the Y connector had the opposite effect we would have expected. Very impressive test.

Unfortunately this just proves which one is a better vacuum. What people need to understand about dust extraction is that it’s the range of effect and volume that makes a difference at the tool end there are some smoke test videos that illustrate this point pretty well. Also what matters is the output in terms of dust that makes it through the machine.

I was surprised, I thought the Rikon would do MUCH better than it did. I am also surprised that the Record Power was not only that much more powerful, but it has such a small can. That motor probably deserves a larger can, maybe a 55 gallon drum. Your demonstration made the decision for me, for when I upgrade from my current Jet, but, I think when I have a Record Power dust collector in my shop, I'm going to have a much larger dust separator in line, than what I am currently using.

I think this just confirms that the lower pressure ("higher suction") produced by the Camvac overwhelmed the low pressure hi-volume dust extractor. Not surprising and not a valid comparison of two dust extractors designed to do quite different jobs.
@StockroomSupply
@StockroomSupply 2 жыл бұрын
I was quite surprised! You are right in saying that the Camvac is high pressure/low volume and the Rikon is low pressure/high volume. I assumed the Rikon, being high volume, would win as I was sucking up a high volume of sawdust. What would be a fair test in you opinion?
@katabrontes
@katabrontes 2 жыл бұрын
@@StockroomSupply I don't think they can be compared fairly. They are designed to do quite different tasks and perform very differently as a result. Although "high pressure/ low volume" extractors are often used for all workshop functions (I use one for my mitre saw, track saw, sanders, planer thicknesser and router table with a 50mm hose and small cyclone for the saws and sander and a 100mm hose with large cyclone for the planer and router) you do need one with a high flow rate to handle the large volume of chips from the planer/ thicknesser and the dust ( with MDF) from the router and collection is not quite as good as it would be with a low pressure/high vol extractor. In a small workshop the Camvac or equivalent twin or triple motor extractor is pretty effective and many, including Peter Parfitt and Dennis from Hooked on Wood, use these. Finding the space for a large LPHV extractor with a large cyclone isn't easy in a small workshop. As to testing I think a practical test of the effectiveness of the different extractors used sequentially for "difficult" tasks such as the planer/ thicknesser and router table would be more useful than measurements of pressure reduction and airflow which,while precise and scientific, wouldn't actually help an average woodworker decide which would suit their purposes. For track saw, mitre saw and sanders the HPLV extractors are best as they cope with small hoses much better than the HVLP high are designed to work with 100-150mm hoses and move a lot of air at low pressure drop.

I'm building a woodshop and have been watching several of your videos. I currently don't have a dust collection system so I'm doing my research as to which one I should purchase. My shop will b 16'x33' with most of the basic woodworking tools (table saw, 6" jointer, 13" plainer, drill press, band saw and lathe). I can put 220 service anywhere I want it (thinking table saw (getting a Sawstop and dust collection), so the Camvac is in the running. Thanks for all your videos and I suspect I'll be purchasing some of my new tools from your shop = love the reviews you do.

Unfortunately you cannot put a bag in the standard Camvacs. There is a wall mount version with a bag kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nr5yeLxzysWwZIU.html Or you can use a cyclone ahead of the Camvacs to capture the dust - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9x8pNp7mtzOZHU.html Thanks for watching!

Hi Ethan, I bought one of these from you guys (CGV386) and it seems really well built, but I can't get the ring on the can with the top on and the filter in place. The only really chintzy part is the ring, and 1) it seems like it (or the top, or the can) is bent, and 2) the ring is so thin that I can see it starting to come apart as I apply force. I've tried pushing the lid and the can together while I tighten the ring, but the gap just keeps moving around the rim. Did I just get a lemon, or is there a trick? Thanks, looking forward to firing this up for the first time.

I called Stockroom Supply with this question this morning and Ethan was out for the day, but they said he'd send me an email. I received the email in less than 10 minutes! Anyway, the brilliant trick/solution is to turn one or two motors on, then cover the inlet, which creates enough downward pressure that the clamp is super easy to close. Thanks, Ethan!

How comparable are Camvacs to oneida supercell? Are these also hybrid design? work with 4" and smaller tools like sanders, tracksaws etc?
@StockroomSupply
@StockroomSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Very similar idea yes! The Camvacs work as we on 4” diameter ducts as 2.5” and smaller. They are a great hybrid dust collector. Also each motor turns on and off individually so depending on the tool size you can vary the power.

How often do you need to be able to collect dust at that volume within that short of a timeframe ? I mean, if your need is about this volume/speed then your system needs a huge collection bag/drum. The test is funny, but it do not tell that much useful stuff about which dust collector can do the job, for most one mand band shops they will both do fine when it comes to collect dust, so where is the real difference ? Could it be in filtration, like in how much fine dust it send into your room during operation ? Could it be something like how often do you need to clean/exchange filters ? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind. To compare different systems you need to know about airspeed, pressure and filtering ability, and under what conditions these are measured, to use a test like this is just plain wrong. A thing that could had made this video more useful was if there also had been a test of each dust collector on it's own collecting the same dust and then measure the time it takes.

That test doesn't make sense. So the way the room works is it is high volume, low pressure. So it's good at dealing with moving a lot of air. It works better with tools that have more cavernous dust paths. Table saws, planers and such. It moves a lot of air but it doesn't move it as hard or as quickly. The camvac is the opposite. So once both tools together have gotten it into a tight area, the camvac's power is gonna steal more dust. Cause it's pulling harder. A better test would be to time the amount of time both take to suck the dust up. Or perhaps to see how far away from the hose they can get it. Or, if you want to highlight the camvac more, how much power they lose with complicated ductwork with a lot of branching. They're really built for different purposes and this test just gives a huge advantage to the camvac.

In order for this comparison to not be meaningless, you need to perform the test several more times using increasing duct lengths with each test. That will reveal which one does better under higher static pressure levels. Also you need to take into account the dust that remains in the filter and do the tests at increasing filter load levels.
@StockroomSupply
@StockroomSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Frank, In my last comparison video I did a fair amount of CFM testing through different length ducts and flex hose. The Camvac, because of its 81" max static pressure vs 9" max on the Rikon, performed better in every case except for directly at the machine. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLJ6dtuqrrfHe2w.html I also talk about the filters extensively in this video. It's worth watching!

Incorrect comparison! The Rikon is a chip collector filtered to try and be a dust collector! The Record is a dedicated dust collector down to 0.5 micron. Compare this, then compare the two record motors to the one rikon. Theyre different machines designed for different types of extraction. Finally the record can only operate for so long due to the heat generated, how long can the rikon operate?
@inspectorbadji9779
@inspectorbadji9779 2 жыл бұрын
aside from the accurate comments that the two devices are designed with different jobs in mind, having the two "competing" to consume the dust from the same front tube is not at all a valid comparison. there are many variables influencing the outcome giving confusing results with that setup. at the least they need to be tested individually with a "control" of the same quantity of dust from the same container or machine outlet etc

Sorry to contradict you, but this test is invalid and proves nothing. The aeraulic tests are not carried out in this way. I've been in the aeraulics business for almost 40 years, I design, build and test all sorts of equipment that has to do with aeraulics, but I've never seen such a ridiculous test.
