Fun Harvest of Prickly Pears (Tunas)

Prickly pears are a famiiar sight in the southwestern United States, and many other parts of the world. Today, we will go on a short outting and experience an easy way to harvest this delicious fruit, and then prepare it for consumption. Enjoy!

I only 'discovered' this fruit several years ago & have become an addict, eating the fruit immediately after picking it to get full advantage of the nutrients.

I teach English to adult immigrants and refugees. In my morning class of advanced students (today!) we were reading some student-written poetry, and something came up about what it means to emigrate. As a result, I taught them the expression "bloom where you are planted." I had just watched this one a couple of days ago and instantly thought about it. Most of my students are Mexican, but others from countries like Peru and Guatemala also. I thought about how the "tuna" and "nopales" bloom/thrive in the desert and we were talking about how nutritious the tuna/prickly pear is. So I showed this to them. I explained you are a tri-lingual KZfaqr and engage in primitive living activities, posting in both English and Spanish. They really liked it a lot. Hopefully you'll get a few new subs from it! I'm hoping to have a chance to show them some more of the videos, too -- I just have to figure out a context or activity! Thank you for such good content!

Not my favourite fruit, although we grew up with an abundance of the fruit in my youth. Love the fact you used the Sieve to remove the spiny prickles. Must tell my parents that trick. Thanks for the tips. You can also use the knife to peel the skin off.

Yeah, the sieve works well, it's just a tedious task. I've also burned them off or just rolled the whole fruit in the dirt long enough for the needles to fall off.

😂 No no nooo you don’t cut it half. You make 3 cuts top and bottom across and you cut lengthwise but only the skin then you take it out just you are taking off jacket 🧥😉😉😉😉👍👍

I've had prickly pears before They're pretty good They were rare finds in my local grocery store and it tasted like a raspberry and a watermelon mixed together.

After watching many videos about the fruit, I picked some pads from some roadside ditch cactus while in Texas, the spines went through my leather gloves, through the bags I put them in and through my jeans as I walked back to the car. A year later, I am still pulling those stupid hairs out of my hand each time I go to get something out of the trunk of my car. I planted the pads in pots and I randomly get those hairs in my feet and hands even it I am not near the pots. I am guessing the dogs rub against them and bring them in the house as well. Pretty sure this plant is the devil and is after my soul... Insult to injury, no flowers or fruits, just pads and death spikes and death hairs.

Some Kind of tunas can be propagated by seed, the others need you to plant one of the leafs.

Chad Zuber yes, many times, I've had the green,orange and red varieties. We Mexicans usually eat it with chile powder and lime, but In my opinion, that just ruins the original flavor.

First go to Mexico the "Tuna" only grows here(yes im mexican) Then you see for a "Nopal" then you have to....cut some of the "Tunas" you have to quit the spines be careful then you cut it by the middle inside the"Tuna" are the seeds then you take it an d ita over Esay Peacy

I've eaten the paddles of this species before. I occasionally find the big green and purple prickly pears growing but they aren't as common as this species.

I have always used my hands to gather prickly. Over time I got accurate at grabbing them without getting pricked. Hence Prickly Pear lol

For the spine removal, I usually boil or roast them. Sometimes I just use a stick to rub the spines off and rinse them before I eat them. Always a snack for me.

And it makes a good dye. I wanna turn it into a paste like paint. But I haven't figured what natural materials could thicken the juice. The good dye comes from roasting them. I discovered gorging on pricklys and couldn't get the color off my hands for three days. People thought I slaughtered something. I had to answer alot of questions.
