It took me nearly 3 years to finally get diagnosed with FND/FMD. In those 3 years I felt so alone and confused because my body was failing me, saw so many specialists and nobody knew what it was. I finally went to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and saw a Functional Neurologist and on the first appointment she made the diagnosis! It was such a relief to finally have some answers. I’ve become significantly disabled by this disorder and have been fighting for disability benefits but kept getting denied due to lack of diagnosis. I’m hoping now that I have a diagnosis I will finally get approved. That in itself is a huge stressor along with the actual disability. When I tried explaining my symptoms I would say I felt like my nerves were misfiring and that’s actually what is happening! Interesting about concussions because I had several before all of this started and one significant one about 4-6 months prior to the onset of my symptoms. I just want to thank you for providing this information because there isn’t a ton of information/ personal stories out there. I hope one day I can fully recover and live a life of independence again. That’s been one of the hardest things. Keep up the great work!

For functional movement disorders, like most neurological disorders, there is not a one step cure. Many people can have great recovery and manage their symptoms over their lifetime, living a full life.
