A group of patients who have the condition Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and their carers recently came together in Derry for a six week programme. The programme was designed by Social Work Lead for Primary Care MDT Team Charmaine McNally who also has the condition.
FND can be a debilitating condition that impacts all aspects of one’s life. Patients normally require contact with a multitude of health and social care services.
Despite high levels of support required, there is a general lack of awareness regarding the condition. This, alongside stigma associated with the condition, has created many barriers for people accessing appropriate support.
The successful programme, which had over 30 participants, introduced patients and their carers to the wide range of supports available to them, exploring coping skills and was an opportunity to share their stories with others who also live with the condition.
