We have a viewer and Taekwondoin named Shaheer showing us Taekwondo in sparring (against a boxer) and in the ring (against a Muay Thai/Kickboxer). Let's see how Shaheer makes his Taekwondo work and what he adds to TKD that we don't always think of as standard in a TKD person. Lots more Shaheer to come!

I appreciate the breakdown Jerry, 👊🏼👊🏼 As far as the leg kicks go in the second fight, I didn’t want to destroy my legs before my second fight (I had 2 fights that day). And the falling over is just classic me 😂😂

@@FightCommentarythere were 3 people in my bracket, I beat the first guy, and lost to the second guy 29-28 because he was fresh, had a bye round and knew my game plan. If there is an odd number of people in a bracket, then one person gets a bye, otherwise everyone has to fight twice

You can tell he’s comfortable in Boxing and Kickboxing exchanges, which is necessary to properly add TKD or Kung Fu flare. He’s not overly defensive or relying on only his movement for his defense, which is one of the main weaknesses for TKD guys moving into a full contact ruleset. Guys who move and guard too much like sport TKD guys will burn up all their cardio and are way too open to the upper body because they tend to keep their hands low all the time to speed up their kicks and get cornered easily because of the only movement based defense. When you can actually put pressure and back up another kickboxer with standard kickboxing that’s the time more off the wall offense can shine and pay off. TLDR: Learn to kickbox and then you can TKD efficiently.

Ironically the moving out of range for defense is not great for kickboxing, but its invaluable for mma. Can't sit in the pocket with 4oz gloves
@StimmedPenguin
@StimmedPenguin 5 ай бұрын
@@mikea7732 For sure. Point Sparring Karateka who have mastered that movement and have developed effective strikes like Wonderboy and Machida can do well in MMA as long as they train their defensive grappling and can kickbox enough to not be bullied in exchanging situations in the pocket and fight back out into point fighting range. Funny enough, Sean Strikland loves boxing in the pocket. It can be done with 4 oz. Just requires its own special mastery and defensive skillset.

TKD has some of the most powerful kicks in the game. As usual a lot of it comes down to the practitioner. The known issues with TKD is it requires everything to go exactly right, as with a kick above the waist you are really committing a lot to the strike, hence all the falling over. Obviously not known for it's boxing, but there are hand strikes, backhands etc. Grappling, locks and ground wrestling is fairly uncommon to TKD but some schools will teach some of it to make it more useful as a defensive art.

It originally have, there are some examples on the textbook, good functional throws and very rudimentary grappling, like elbow, knees, low kicks, etc, but most schools forget that, I learned back in the 90s. But tkd is not a grappling art

The lack of leg kicks in the traditional curriculums of TKD, karate, and many other martial arts was because no one in the mainstream knew how effective leg kicks were until American kickboxing champion, Rick Roufus fought muay Thai fighter, Changpuek Kietsongrit in the 1980's when everyone thought karate and wing chun kung fu were the deadliest arts around. Initially, Roufus overwhelmed Kietsongrit with power and Kietsongrit, under modified rules, was not allowed to use the elbows of muay Thai. But eventually Kietsongrit's leg kicks took a toll on Roufus who could no longer stand in Round 4 and lost via referee stoppage. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5mWp7V3sbe1n6s.html Note that the chambered kicks of traditional TKD and karate kicks also did not suit itself to leg kicks which require the unchambered heavy swinging round kicks in muay Thai. Much as the same way MMA showed the prowess of a skilled grappler, the Roufus KB vs MT fight brought leg kicks to mainstream martial arts.

@assoverteakettle People knew about it, there were Thais or Kickboxers doing low kicks in the early 70s in America already, i heard the American Kickboxing rules was made by Bill Wallace, or for him.. he didn't wanted to be kicked in the legs

Yes, many people had seen or heard about muay Thai (or "Thai boxing") previous to the Roufus fight. You see it in the movie, "Man with the Golden Gun". But the mainstream (the layman) in the Western world in the age of the karate and kung fu craze did not realize how potent muay Thai really is.

His dojo is called Functional Taekwondo and he wants to teach people a sort of modified taekwondo that has boxing and muay thai, in an effort to make the art "functional". Nothing bad in that, per se, but the dude got really over his head. Besides the name, he has a KZfaq channel back then dedicated on trash talking all forms of taekwondo besides his. And he made some enemies. One of them was Herman Branche, who dug out Kelly's background and was found out that he lied about his credentials, working experience, and was also not trained in muay thai as he advertised himself to be. He eventually left YT when the backlash became too much.

The taekwondo kickboxers that do exist or atleast the pros you can find which are few to none are all world champions when given boxing there’s something about that Taekwondo style and that’s just too overwhelming elusive and trickey to handle overall That being said the biggest weakness too all these taekwondo guys have been the leg kicks all of the champs worst losses come from getting torn apart from the ground up the most devastating case (being an mma fight) easily has to be Douglas Lima vs Michael Venom Paige But Taekwondo is an incredible style when you take a Taekwondo guy to any fight gym you create a world champion easily

There is a Korean martial art/style of kickboxing named Kyuk Too Ki which is a hybrid of Muay Thai, boxing, and Judo, including the throws, slams and takedowns and submissions and groundwork of Judo. It also has the stance and footwork more closely associated with Korean martial arts, not Muay Thai, but not the jumping kicks seen in TKD. It does have heavy use of elbows and knees like Muay Thai, but I'm not sure how much of an emphasis on the use of the Thai plum or clinch. I have read that it is trained and used, but not as heavily as Muay Thai. I have a DVD on it, but it is difficult to find a great deal of information about it online.
