Was fighting off a sinus infection while filming this video. This episode has hints of classic office genius, and modern era comedy sloshing around together.
This episode makes me wonder…what does a bean mean? Maybe I missed the point, so let me know.

One of my favorites. When Andy goes to Mr. Ramish's office hoping he'd have to lie to trick his way into his office and he opens up his door and asks, "Is there someone here to see me?.......Come on in." happened to me when I thought I'd have to lie to rent an apartment because I had no job and no rental history at the time and the landlord just straight up asked me, "So, do you want it?". I had burner phones and all these lies ready to go. I was kind of disappointed just like Andy.

1:51 that is a good point that I hadn't thought about before, but I would say that it would make sense for Angela to only invite everyone in the office if attendance was projected to be embarrassingly low and they just needed bodies to save face

This cold opening is actually one of my favourites. Ryan's hollow rants about an artist he's never been a fan of before, A rare but enjoyable glimpse of Pam as a bit of an antagonist. I Love that Dwight is a fan of the Beatles, even the weirdo in the Office that is known to be quite counter culture has an appreciation for the Beatles. It feels like one of those season 1-6 moments where the whole office is ganging up on one person when they talk too much. It's beautiful

Believe it or not I actually liked The Farm and felt with adjustment and time it could have worked, but that is a minority opinion. Even Rainn Wilson said it didn't work, but IDK Dwight is my favorite character so I wanted to see more of him.

@@cherylcampbell9369 I did as well. I wish it became a series, but it begs the question that if it did was Dwight just going to leave The Office show right then and there and how would The Office have ended? I always wondered if they had planned it all out if The Farm actially worked out.

So, while I do get your point about how Andy chose to get fired, at the end of the day, we do not know whether or not he was calling Robert's bluff. I think the point of him saying no was refusing the salesman position and insisting on the manager position even if it meant he got fired and his impotence went away because he finally stood up for himself. That said, anybody who has ever lost their job will tell you that even if you feel good right after, it will hit you eventually, especially if you are still unemployed after like a week. I think it is totally within Andy's character that he would have bounced back by that point. Also, good spot on the Champion reference but I do not think the episodes line up. Champion was first introduced in January of 2012. This episode came out in April.

I think you underrate how important it was to the plot for Nellie to ingratiate herself with the urban faction of the office. This was prime Obama era so her being accepted by Darryl is her being symbolically accepted by much more of the office as a whole. That was mostly satire but Darryl's talking head in "Search Committee" about having an advantage due to being... blaaa-aaaaack, plus his continuous importance to the culture of the office (despite Andy having a righteous monologue about how Darryl didn't earn the manager job), even dating back to the Michael Scott Era (which had an... interesting relationship with black people), makes me feel that the writers (possibly subconsciously) affirmative-actioned Darryl's character into a role of authority (via Michael and Andy's white guilt-based reverence of him). Writing that comment felt like navigating a minefield (which I probably didn't even survive), and a video about the role of Darryl's character throughout the narrative would probably need to be even more sensitive, but I truly believe that the subject could make for maybe the most interesting and academic analysis of The Office that we ever see on KZfaq. Steve Carrell's portrayal of Michael Scott's probably well-meaning ignorance manifesting itself as infantilizing praises (eg saying "look at that picture that you drew! You know what? We are gonna put that up on the refrigerator in the kitchen" about a document that earned Darryl a promotion and new office from the new CEO, preceded ) is such a can of worms. The cynical way to think about it would be that he is giving Darryl as little credit as possible, due to a primitive prejudice, while projecting as much praise as possible, due to his pathological desire to be liked (which is based on social trends). One could argue that Michael tries to pander to whomever is in front of him while being subconsciously tribalist (the same way a baby who responds best to people the same color as their mother is tribalist), or maybe just cripplingly egocentric, which manifests itself in his many ignorant statements that come across as racist or sexist (except that's ridiculous. His statements weren't sexist, they were misogynistic). I could go on arguing for both sides. I dont even feel good in my stomach about the last three paragraphs despite believing it all, so I can only imagine how delicate it would be to make and put out a video essay on Michael and Andy's relations with black people. It's just a hugely interesting topic that I dont see discussed in fan media

Thank you for attempting to navigate this. It would be an interesting discussion! I think most creators stay away from it because they either minimize it or because a lot of people have trouble with nuance and it's hard to navigate someone both sometimes being racist with other times they aren't. I assumed the office was past the "isn't it funny that this person it racist" trope...but w got that random "Si Senor" moment in Season 7 with Holly and Michael. It was disappointing that that was inserted in a season that otherwise saw Michael growing past many of his "bad habits"

At season 8 and on we are handed only secondary characters, and searching for a main one. The comedy is trying to make Andy the lead. Eight and nine have some amazing episodes, but it starts to feel like it's just lucky. I personally think that the show might have done better if Helms wasn't even involved. He's a hilarious guy no doubt, but he was misused in this show so much. They spent so much time writing around him that they weren't able to actually create anything cohesive. Again some of my favorite episodes are in 8 and 9. I just think that it was in no kind of track compared to the early seasons of the show.

The Beatles covered Smokey Robinson's song "You've Really Got A Hold On Me." You'd think Dwight would know and mention that. (I always thought "Paperback Writer" and "Eleanor Rigby" were interesting choices for Dwight to mention.)

Am I the only one that wished we could have seen that Rock Opera become a realty?
@jerkytoo8184

The conventional wisdom is that after show's been on for years and years, the writers come up short on plot ideas. While that's probably true, there's also other real-life factors at play as well. First there was the loss of Steve Carell, who, by the end of his time on the show, had established himself as a successful actor outside of the Office. The writers had to reshuffle the deck to figure out who would fill that role. Since Ed Helms was quickly rising in fame as well after the Hangover, it sort of made sense to have that actor be the new manager. But while the actor may have earned that position, Andy Bernard hadn't. On top of that, David Spader and Catherine Tate were brought on, but it wasn't clear what their characters were meant to be. I think the producers were excited to have gotten Spader under contract, but then the writers had to scramble to figure out what to do with the Robert California character. They never really knew what to do with him.

Back in the day, K-Tel records would sell 'hits' albums. One had Smoky Robinson featured. The guy in the commercial was cranking the Smoky. His Father asked him to turn it down. His response, 'But Dad, it's Smoky!!' Some of you may remember this.
