Education in poorer communities need to be addressed. There is a clear discrepancy between the quality of education one receives from a rich and poor communities. Children have no control what families they are born into, so all students should be in schools where their abilities can be developed to the fullest. The reality is that these poorer schools tend to be filled with black and Latino students. There are broken systems in place that make it more difficult for these students.

This isn't going to change SHIT. Colleges do not want 85% East Asian student bodies. Colleges do not want 60% female student bodies. The studies on the benefits of a diverse student body are very clear. On top of that, prospective students really don't want to go to schools with demographics that are WAY out of a whack (for example, colleges are acutely aware that students are avoiding schools that have really unbalanced gender imbalances).

Also America has never been and never will be a meritocracy when their are people like Donald Trump, Elon Musk, etc who were able to be mediocre all the time yet still get pushed into positions of power. Or imagine being a Japanese American who was imprisoned in camps and then let out and have to start over then only to be bypassed by b lacks who were more well off but had lower scores. This is exactly what was happening in California in the 70-80’s. Prop 209 ended affirmative action in the 1990’s. Asian American enrollment jumped from 20% to 40%. California actually owes reparations to Asian Americans not b lacks. California never had slavery. California was part of the Chinese Exclusion Act. The biggest mass lynching happened to Chinese. Property was stolen from Japanese Americans and never given back. Korean Americans had their stores burned and looted in the 1992 LA Riots. The police purposely did nothing. Historic racial discrimination in college admissions. Even to this day. Asian American business owners not protected. Robbed. So many attacked and beaten by b lacks. Same for homeowners.

@twerkysandwich64 Ok, we got to address this here an now. 90% of the U.S railroads were east of the Mississippi. Chinese railroad workers did not built most of the trans continental railroad system, they help build the smallest section(which is important). Black Americans built most of the railroads in the south(under the worst conditions), a huge chunk of the system in the West(or what was called the west back then), and some of the system up north(wear most of the system is/was). Also, most Asian students applying for Harvard are not the grandchildren of the Chinese railroad workers, they are the children of well off migrants. Let's be honest in this dialogue.

Why not just scrap these personality scores??? Claiming that asian americans have poor personality is some of the most openly racist thing I've heard. No university in Europe cares about personality as long as you're not a criminal. You just get admitted based on your grades. Yes, they do have quotas in place for kids that come from marginalused areas but they still need to be academically good enough to get in. In the US, I heard that being a mediocre student that tests high on personality and sociability iwhilst being black or latino is enough to get you into an elite university which is crazy. As a black person myself I find it more insulting to know that the bar has been lowered to get into an institution I otherwise wouldn't have than any n-word.

I don't understand why these schools can't survive with the excessive costs charged to their students. Here in Quebec Canada for example if we had to pay for our tuition fees out of pocket for 3yrs to become a veterinarian it would be nearly 40k$. Luckily we only pay 2725$/yr and our taxes pay the rest. Donations are still legal but our provincial regulations prevent any kind of "lobbying actions by doing so. Therefore a donor can't secure a spot for their child😂😂😂. These institutions should be managed not as a business but rather as a nonprofit organization. I know currently one young girl from mu country Africa currently on scholarship at Havard that girl is super brilliant and all the elite schools wanted her. She is super smart to the extent that in her second year of high school, she took the exams and scored all As, and in her final year she took the exams and scored. Got her SAY Perfect score they compared her score and she is one of a kind and is so proud of her. She was admitted based on merit, not on AA and her family did not even think of applying to these elite schools to reach out to her high school after the state national quiz even though most countries invited her. The 2 other contestants also got into other elite universities like Princeton, and Yale. There are so many students from mu country that got admitted based on merit due to how smart they are. One university student got a perfect GPA and most universities want her and big financial institutions any to sponsor her after their masters she can work for them that how smart she was the funny thing was most of these students are poor.
@RAconsciousness
@RAconsciousness 8 ай бұрын
Even though she's smart, she still probably fell under Affirmative Action. That's racism in a nutshell. For example, a Tuskegee Airmen who flew during combat and had thousands of hours of flying outside of the military was denied employment with a commercial airline. Every qualification for the airline he met or surpassed. After suing, the airline had to compensate him because they could not prove his denial of employment beyond the fact that he was African American. That's why Affirmative Action was put in place. For non-white people who are qualified/ overqualified who are still denied whatever it is because of their race. When they checked off the box on your friend, they most likely checked off qualified through Affirmative Action. If Affirmative Action was not in place, she might not have been contacted. Her spot would've been given to a white student. Without Affirmative Action, white people, white establishments, white institutions, white banks, white businesses, etc don't legally have to give non-white people anything. They can keep it all to themselves.

I think AA made sense if it strictly applied for white & black Americans. To apply AA to Hispanic and Asian people made no sense because there is no historical wrong within American history where a current Hispanic applicant should be given a boost for the nonexistent crimes of an Asian applicant’s ancestors. Because AA includes races outside black & white Americans, it became no more about rewriting historical wrongs, but more assuming getting college diversity % to match US population diversity % as rewriting all historical wrongs when it doesn’t (proof of this is how AA designs it so a Asian person has it harder than a white person). The higher education representation between Asian and Hispanic Americans can be explained by the class disparity between the two can be explained by the vast differences in the preconditions required for a Asian person to have the funds to immigrate to America through plane & gain citizenship in contrast to a Hispanic person through land. Most rich Asian Americans were already considered rich before immigrating from exploiting the labor of poorer Asian people back in their homeland. AA would only work if applied to all races if the interest for DEI for upper education diversity to match the diversity of the American population would go along with America also pushing for the diversity in America’s population to match the diversity of the world population. If America had an AA system but for immigration policy where an Asian immigrant had an easier access to citizenship on the bases of representation since Asian people are like 50% of the world population, then we would see a lot more poorer Asian people become Asian Americans & thus bringing down the average test scores and GPA of Asian American applicants.

I also saw a comment talking about historically black colleges. What everyone here needs to understand is that Black students would have had the need for our own colleges or Affirmative action if blacks people weren’t stopped from attending white institutions. All of these decisions in history were made because the playing field was never fair for black people in America. I see a lot of Asian Americans screaming about not getting the same treatment as black people but most well rounded people understand that Asian American families wouldn’t be in America if it wasn’t for Black people marching for equality and fighting for immigration acts in history. We literally fought for acts so that it was easier for East Asians as well as South East Asians to live and open up stores on American soil. I do feel that a lot of Asian Americans get on their high horse and tend to not want to open a history book but they’re quick to compare experiences to another minority group who is minding their own business. The higher education representation between Asian and Hispanic Americans can be explained by the class disparity between the two that can be explained by the vast differences in the preconditions required for a Asian person to have the funds to immigrate to America through plane & gain citizenship in contrast to a Hispanic person through land.

"To apply AA to Hispanic and Asian people made no sense because there is no historical wrong within American history where a current Hispanic applicant should be given a boost for the nonexistent crimes of an Asian applicant’s ancestors." This is ridiculous. AA isn't about punishing X group for Y group's ancestors, and it's telling that you view it that way. AA corrects for the fact that is this wildly racist nation, that was monstrously slow for the majority of its existence, and that it acknowledges that one group EXPLICITLY set itself above the others in terms of access to wealth, education, health, safe neighborhoods, etc... It works most clearly in the case of a white applicant (more likely to be wealthy) vs a black applicant (more likely to be from poverty). This is why I'm in favor of it being a class based thing as it will continue to correct for these imbalances and disadvantaged roots. P.S. The Supreme Court didn't fully dislike AA either. There's exceptions left for it as well, such as admissions to Military academies. Because the Government is more interested in ensuring a continuous stream of cannon fodder.

From a supply/demand perspective, I am going to make a couple predictions maybe several years down the line: 1. The end of affirmative action only really reduces the diversity at the first tier colleges. Minority students that would have gotten the "tip" at a tier x college will naturally land at a tier x+1 college, so the diversity at tier x+1 college would not necessarily change. Only the tier 1 colleges will be affected because there are no minority students being tipped into a higher tier college. 2. High performing, but super unlucky Asians will no longer be faced with being denied at high tier colleges practicing AA, and would also not be denied at lower tier colleges that deny them trying to deflate their acceptance rates thinking they are unlikely to matriculate. That erases a really horrible side-effect of AA for Asians. 3. The diversity at public colleges in California will increase. Because the UC system didn't practice AA, they took the burden of taking in more Asian students that were rejected by colleges practicing AA. Now that AA is illegal that relieves the pressure of Asian students of choosing UCs because they were rejected by colleges practicing AA.

Exactly. The assumption conservatives are making is that Black people, Latinos, East Asians, Natives, and White People are starting off from the same flat, level ground. We KNOW, statistically that's not true. We KNOW that Black people and Latinos pretty much get shit on at almost every step. Worse maternal health outcomes, worse healthcare, poorer neighborhoods, garbage schools (even while living in high tax base cities). For a student from that background to perform academically on a level Harvard will even notice is an EXTREME feat. Allowing this student in will enable them to break generational poverty cycles. BTW, this also applies to the poorer families from West, Central, and SE Asian families. Compare that to East Asian families or White families. A lot of the former are actually wealthy, educated immigrants and severely skew results. White families have the highest amount of generational wealth. They live in neighborhoods with schools funded by high property taxes, college prep resources up the wazoo, college educated parents that know how to navigate the admissions and prep process, the kids are often covered by their parents health insurance, etc... How the fuck is anyone cheering that now the groups from the first group have an even lower chance of getting into these schools? Especially since they're major parts of the country's population.

The Asians litigating Harvard are not seeking preferential Asian treatment, but a level playing field for all applicants regardless of race. SCOTUS determined that Harvard was arbitrarily defiling Asian students as part of their "diversity" initiatives using a pseudo personality test. That's the crux of the issue here. My point is “legacy” programs have largely emerged due to the history of racism/white supremacy in the country. So legacy programs are hardly “color-blind.”
@keemstarkreamstar7069
@keemstarkreamstar7069 Жыл бұрын
So a system that isn’t fully colorblind is worse than a system that explicitly discriminates based on race? And to no good end either. Education levels for the groups it sought out to help, both in total and in relative to other groups, have actually fallen in the span under Affirmative Action. It has no measurable benefits to the group it seeks out to help beyond artificially elevate them, and in practice discriminates far, far more than legacy admissions. Historical and structural racism must be pretty weak if Asians, even poor Asians, can easily outsmart it and climb to the top. What is preventing other groups from “acting like Asians” and thus dismantling “white supremacism”. Seems like it would be the easiest way to undo a wicked system, if it existed.

I'm in the middle between this whole Affirmation Action case. About the whole poor kids not getting into top colleges, when I attended high school graduations (including mine), I would hear personal speeches/testimonies from poor students who got accepted to Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc. They would share their countless, dreaded study hours with limited resources to get those grades and achieving their acceptance from those top colleges backed by scholarships. They got accepted because of their merit. Isn't that how it's supposed to work? I get the whole legacy aspect as well. But in the end, when we're injured, do we want a good doctor or a discount doctor to take care of us? Do we want a good layer or discount lawyer to represent us? When we watch sports, do we want a good team or a discount team?

I am glad that Affirmative Action was struck down, because I think that it is an unfair policy. Asians are hurt the most by Affirmative Action. The two universities that I often hear about Asians being discriminated due to Affirmative Actions are Harvard and University of Texas. Since I live in Texas, hearing that Asian students are being rejected from University of Texas affects me personally, because my relatives or friends maybe become a victim of the policy. Someone mentioned that some universities have 90% whites and only 10% minorities. 1. This statistics do not change the fact that Harvard and University of Texas reject Asians because they make up a high number of the demographics. 2. If those numbers are Ethical due to students grades and qualifications, then just accept it. Don't try to come up with laws to get more under-qualified applicants to get accepted. There are Elite schools and then there Non-Elite schools. Just because you didn't get accepted into an Elite school means that your life and career is over. There are many people that have had success careers or created successful businesses without going to Elite schools. There are many people that have created successful businesses without even going to college. Don't get butt-hurt when you can't get into an Elite college due to your poor grades or qualifications. There are other school options.

People that are taught to be disciplined, should not be judged of their personality. They’re trying to go to college to better themselves and better life of others close to them they are not looking to entertain., So what of their personality? why does that matter? And as far as Black people are concerned, why would Asian people perpetuate anti-blackness? Let’s be clear that’s what it is. Our community has fought long and hard for decades, centuries and other cultures have benefited from those advancements. Why would you dig a pitfall for a group of people only to fall into it yourself why must you dim someone else’s light to shine yours? Where is the gratefulness for all the civil rights fights to advance this country on behalf of Black people and people of color, since Martin Luther King said, let us be judged off of the content of our character? It’s very disingenuous and gross!

So you can say the best well rounded Asians get in at higher rate than anyone else. Harvard has a right to meet it's objectives for diversity especially since AA was the plan and in place before most of these Asians even came to America. Nobody forced you to come- like they did blacks. To come into a country and complain about that country's policies to right it's own wrongs before you even got here is pretty arrogant. Harvard will still meet its goals even without AA. Asians simply have removed themselves from the "people of color" narrative. I actually believe the court made the right decision but with the wrong narrative. 2023 is not 1960 and Harvard's faculty, administration is not what it was 60 years ago. The black community is also not what it was as you now have legacy blacks., billionaire blacks and a black middle class. So times have changed and AA should be based on income and not race. But Asians took the "Blacks took my spot" narrative and this will backfire on them. Especially as conservatives consider China the main enemy of the U.S. Just don't come running to the DNC for help. You showed who you are and we believe you.

I only found one Asian on this list so i did as many Harvard notable alumni lists I could find. Oddly the only Asian American on the Harvard nnoable list was Jeremy Lin, the Asian basketball player- that's the only guy to make the list. Blacks on the list include: Neil degrasse Tyson, Angela Davis, WEB Dubois, Barrack Obama, Lewis Henry Gates, Cornell West and this list could go on. See for yourself. Apparently, blacks who graduate from Harvard tend to make more of an impact on society than their Asian counterparts. Most Asians, it seems go into teaching. Harvard can boast the first non-white U.S. president- their highest achieving black according to the list. Or the first Asian on the Knicks (who never won a championship and probably never made the playoffs.) If you were Harvard would you want more Asians or more blacks?

America has a history of denying black citizens access to colleges because of race and put other policies were in place to hold black people down, like Jim Crow, separate and unequal schools, etc. Blacks fought, marched and protested and America decided to address this past discrimination offering a special opportunity to those they have wronged. What's bad about that? Most Asian began migrating to the U.S. after the 1965 Immigration Act which came into place after the nation's civil rights struggles. How is it right for Asians to come in and sit at the table set by other people's struggle and question the "deal" America has made with them to address past harmful treatment. Blacks fought for this opportunity. Asians did not. These policies were in place long before Asians migrated to America and nobody forced them to come. Unlike blacks who were forced to come to America, and work for no pay for generations. It would be different if Asians came and marched for freedom, equality and justice- but they did nothing and now they can sit in Starbucks and cry injustice and criticize policies that America put in place long before Asians saw the U.S. as a safe place to immigrate to. They are sitting at the table someone else has set and complaining about the deal the table-setters put in place long before the Asians immigrated here. It would be like me moving to Germany and complaining because the government has a special deal with Jews that addresses the past wrongs against them but excludes me. Countries have histories. If you don't like the history and special laws of the land, don't come. No one invited you anyway. You saw a good table and decided to grab a meal. People who set that table did so with a different deal in place. All that being said, I do support the Supreme Court decision to end AA. The people who benefitted from AA were black immigrants who, like Asian immigrants, have no history of suffering under American law. AA should be replaced by a policy based on brains and economic need. Hopefully when this happens, black immigrants and Asian immigrants will STFU and understand it's not about them.

Zip code don't work either. If you live in a gentrified area now you're excluded because a bunch of wealthy people decided to buy up where you live, as if your grand parents weren't sharecroppers? Btw, if you're poor from another country, that doesn't have anything to do with Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action was created to address America's legacy, not the worlds legacy. I shouldn't directly benefit from Affirmative Action because I'm from a poor country(Cuba), even though my country is poor because of America but that's a separate issue. I wish Black Americans were more protective from early on, they shared with everyone and now look.
