Progress to an advanced level of guitar playing - bulletproofguit... Here's a lesson on funk guitar and how you can use your fretting hand to mute several strings at once whilst strumming to achieve a percussive, funky rhythm sound. This is a technique commonly used by the likes Nile Rodgers, and it's a great one to get to grips with if you're just starting out with the funk guitar style.

I once got basically booted out a big band for not being able to play that muting. They wanted to me to play the beginning of Jackson 5 I want you back. I don't really regret parting ways, getting back to it now.

Great lesson! Getting my fingers to fret ONLY those melody notes while keeping the other strings totally muted is TOUGH! I start hearing harmonics or other notes chiming in... Any advice?

One thing I've learnt is to use my index finger as a permanent mute and use my others to play the riff. Obviously not the best fix but it's better than nothing.

Try as I might I can't play this on the D string. The shape of my fingers makes it impossible to get enough contact with the B string to get it to shut up. I can play this technique just fine using the G string however. 🤷♂️

when I try to mute them it just sounds like harmonics:-/

Then you're muting too lightly in that case. Press down a little harder and you shouldn't have that problem.
