A panther isn't a type of big cat, a panther is the name that can be given to any big cat in the panthera genus which includes lions

@Sigmarune no its not, when the name black panther is used its just a common nickname for any melanistic big cat in the panthera genus of cats, it's usually a melanistic jaguar or leopard but if there was ever a melanistic lion aka a black lion it could also be nicknamed a black panther, you'll probably find the American Mountain lion on Google If you type in panther but its just a nickname not a species

@Sigmarune put panther into Google and you get the black panther, and first thing that comes up is the Wikipedia page literally explaining how black panthers or panthers are just melanistic jaguars or leopards, you don't get a specific species when typing in panther because it's not a species name bit just a nickname for a black melanistic panthera genus big cat. I don't understand how this isn't getting through to you

Panthers are actually any animal in the panthera genus, this includes lions. So yes Pink Panther could be a lion.
