I remember when car magazines used to have centerfold pics of these cars, each month. My walls were covered with a lot of the cars you discussed. Great job!

I used to hang out at Dickinson drag strip as a teen. In grade 12 after working for awhile. Icame home with a 1968 Plymouth GTX with a 440 packed in it, my dad thought there was a thunder storm when I came home. H e did not want me to have such a powerful car. But I let him drive it, it had a four speed with the old pistol grip wood shifter. I got to keep it. I often woke up to it leaving with dad barking my back tires. RIP Dad. I miss our car!

The Barracuda @ 45sec. Was bought by my Dad & Brothers and raced @ Ohio tracks. We called it "The Big Cat" Injected 426 on Nitro out of Sandusky, OH. It was a great time to be a 8yo. Went on to buy "Mr. Pickette" in 72. Thanks for the memories. I'm the only one left of my family now.

As far as I'm concerned, The Golden Age of Funny Car's, right there in that 10 year span. One can probably say with certainty that it was also the golden age for super stock, which gave way in popularity to pro stock as well. The sheer volume of cars in this era says alot about how it was almost a class of racer where anyone could dip their toes in it. With the coming of big time sponsors like Revell and others, it helped pave the way to what we have today, unrecognizable blobs with hints of Mustang grills in the front of the blob....... No mention of Barry Setzer's Vega with Pat Foster behind the wheel. That car dominated for a long time in this early era....

Great video. Brings back good childhood memories seeing a majority of these at Cordova and Byron with my dad. The cars might have been slower than today, but they were better looking and more exciting to watch.

My favorite track ,Lions Drag Strip, Saw some amazing races there in the mid & late 60's .Tuesday night was run what ya' brung racing...5 bucks, a helmet and a tech inspection would get you 3 passes through the lights. They had a sign at the exit from the parking lot that read " Drive the Highways...Race at Lions" Tons of great memories from there and Saturday Night dirt racing at Ascot Park!

Super video. There was nothing better than the late 60’s and 70’s era funny cars. I was blessed that I had the opportunity to be part of a funny car team in 76 when I helped Jim “The Wombat “ Wemett’s Mustang II. Met some super people that I use to read about in the magazines that I will never forget. I feel sorry for people who love drag racing especially funny cars that missed out in that era because that was real drag racing not the hi dollar commercialized BS that goes on today.

Great video, being a late 70s baby I still remember seeing these on TV during the early 80s. I'd have to say this era of funny cars has to be the best years of some nice bodies which they all had very nice paint

Yep those were the days. I spent many a day and night at Irwindale raceway watching many of these cars run. The 32 car meets were awesome. Today funny cars are just too fast. Heck prostock cars run faster than the funnies did back in the 70's

Great stuff...was kinda hoping to see my cousin Grant Springers built rig and driver Barry Price...Last of the Mohicans Corvette. The team started with a Vega and Barry said it was dicey at the finish line so they went heavier with the Vette. Grant was from Eugene Oregon and been raised building motors for Go-Karts....His father was exactly like Burt Monroe in The Worlds Fastest Indian. Racing was our life in 50's & 60's Eugene. Light to light or every night out 30th for the midnite nationals and Grant always had a fast machine...He dominated with a 58 Impala 2-speed gooey-go for way more years than it should have. He was a great friend and close family. I used to have a 64 fury 383/330 and if it ever had a hiccup, Grant was right under the hood to figure it out...We will see ya later draggin' on the Sun...Save me a SplitWindow!

I am watching this from Germany. In trying to get a feel for the speed I have compared the 1970 Porsche 917 top speed down the Hunaudieres (Mulsanne Straight). The numbers differ, but it might be fair to assume 240 mph. The Mulsanne is round 5 km long, followed by a 90 degree corner. Still, the 917 was the top product of the Porsche racing division, driven by the best racedrivers in its time. It is almost unbelievable what privateers and small shops came up with, being shown in this clip. And it's bloody frightening too. Thankyou.

I was hoping to see a photo of the 1969 Dodge mini charger CHI Town Hustler. Absolutely the baddest funny car that ever existed ! First time it went to the west coast everyone thought it was simply famous for it's burnout. Once the smoke from the burnout cleared everyone watched them walk away with first place. Austin Coil power at its best ! A few pronunciation correctuins: Ridici and W ise REE DEE CEE Romeo Palamedes PAL A MEE DEES Ron Scrima SCREE MA

By today's standards, low 7 second runs at 180-200 mph seems unremarkable, Pro Stock cars surpassed that performance level years ago, BUT, these early cars were wild and wooly, loud and pretty. I attended shows at York US30 Dragway in York, Pa in the late 60's and early 70's and these cars were awesome. The pits were unencumbered with cordoned-off cars, everything was out in the open, you could talk to the drivers. Once, I saw a fan assist Shirley Muldowney pack her chute, I stood a few feet from "Jungle Jim" Liberman as he removed his spark plugs after a run (he tossed one to me while it still too hot to hold comfortably, I wish I still had it), Tommy Ivo gave me and 3 of my buddies his freshly torn blower belt which we took to metal class and cut it into four equal pieces. It was a great time.

The main comment here is the one describing "Fast Eddie Schartman" total cost for that ready to 69 funny car 20,000.00....the modern day cookie cutter carbon fiber bodies alone 70,000.00.....this is why I thumb my nose at the modern racing world....no matter if it's roundy round or straight line....it's all a deep pocket ass kissing corporate B.S. scham

Your so right. Big corporate money ruined drag racing especially the professional categories. The 1000 foot deal in TF and FC really spoiled it also. Drag Racing is 1320 feet not 1000 feet. The NHRA has gone way down hill also. Even back in 76 I always heard Jungle telling people how much he hated the NHRA and I can understand why even back then.
