I know the LT.Commander Wendell Eugene Lemon, that's the man who said Attention Gentleman! He is my great uncle and was very proud to be the only person on board the USS SAINT PAUL (CA-73) to have a speaking part. He played Bridge with the Duke, Burgess Meredith & Carroll O'Connor every night.Great movie!

I don't think your correct. If you watch some of the other scenes in clips you will see some of the crew playing small parts in speaking roles. I was on the Saint Paul as a Fire Control Technician when they filmed this movie and recognize a few of the guys in the various scenes. Not friends but crew members I recognize. I was only on the ship for 6 months as a short timer when the destroyer I had been on was headed to Viet Nam and I didn't have enough time left so they put me on the Saint Paul. I was discharged in November 1964 at North Island, San Diego. I was above the flying bridge with a couple of friends looking down when they were filming the scene when John Wayne was all bandaged up and we were talking very quietly but Otto Preminger heard us and yelled for us to shut up. Oops, sorry!

One thing that strikes me is that John Wayne never had any real-life experience of the kind of roles he played most (cattle rancher, lawman or military guy). Yet he was quite convincing in all of them. He was the ultimate American, tough and no nonsense, but good hearted and with a sense of humour. And even shy in a old school macho way. Spitfire redhead Maureen O'Hara, another great actor, was his perfect counterpart and buddy. I love them both, God bless them!

My dad was stationed at Hickam AFB when this was being filmed. I was a young boy, and was fishing off a dock on the Hickam side of the channel. I noticed a planes flying over, then heard explosions. I swear they air-brushed me out from that dock, because I remember the ship sailing out from Pearl and it went right by me. To think, I almost made it in a John Wayne movie. :-)

If you look closely I found this a long time ago, there are flush head bolts connecting the handrail to the deck, in 1941 ships all used regular 1/8 bolts on stairways. Also the rubber treads used on the deck plating are black, before 1956 all ship is used light grey rubber treads. Also the tables in the wardroom are lengthwise from the doorway, the bureau of ships in 1940 mandated all wardroom tables be horizontal to the entrance

@Orn Gorn Kirk's character had to go out that way. It took me twenty years to figure that out after my parents had taken me to see In Harm's Way back in '65. The adult themes went way over my nine year-old head when I first watched that movie. It's one of my all-time favorites now.

Orn Gorn John Wayne kept the acting restrained as he was suffering from undiagnosed lung cancer, it was found after the film was finished. Also only someone who has never been to sea would call all combatant vessels as “battle ships”. I don’t need to be a smart ass myself I spent 30yrs in the Navy and commanded destroyers and frigates. I would NEVER refer to either as a “battle ship”. To do so would invite confusion and ridicule.

Love this movie but it always bothered me that Admiral Torrey arrived at his new posting in a Grumman Albatros which did not enter service until 1949. It's likely he would have used a PBY Catalina but the movie producers claim none were available. That's hard to believe since many were still flying. My theory is it was just easier to go with the Albatros since they were already using lots of other stuff from the Navy for this movie.

@@joeydepalmer4457 Yeah, we drove jeeps, too, of course. I can't recall right now off the top of my head what the nomenclature of my jeep was, but it certainly was not a WW2 vehicle. I thought it was an M151, but that's what they were saying was a Vietnam-era model, so now I don't remember what I drove. I drove it for a while, there in 1984.

Here's a funny blooper in your video, the ship was cruiser, not a battleship.

Someone had to go through this movie frame by frame to find this and then be able to read lips. Get a life.

1tired citizen- Lol... They probably caught it accidentally one day. Still, once you see it, it's impossible to un-see. The extra was probably reacting that way due to multiple takes of that one scene.

Yeah...it looked coincidental. Also he may have been beginning to silent mutter something like extras are usually asked to do.

I like this movie but the women’s hairdo’s were from the 60’s not the 40’s which always bugged me but other than that a great movie.
