there were soooo many underrated lines in this movie, "I'm a man with no power, does that make me a woman?"

Yay! You hit the nail on the head about how this movie is against patriarchy, but still sympathetic to men and their emotions. Ken is one of the most sympathetic characters in the film, despite also serving as an antagonist for the second half. Really clever and nuanced screenplay! :)

This is America Feerera's first major movie role since Astrid in How To Train Your Dragon. So happy she's getting more work now she's so underrated!

Ryan and Margot did a great job in this movie. The two of them had great chemistry together.

This movie was an absolute blast with a theater full of people. When I tell you the audience lost their goddamn minds when the Ken battle shifted into that dance routine. Highly recommend catching this in theaters if its still playing by you. (Also, isn't it so blatantly obvious to anyone with half a brain that this isn't anti-men? The whole uproar over this movie is so ridiculous)

Greta Gerwig created something magical. Not only did she bring up important topics but she brought people together and I think changed a lot of peoples thoughts about the image and idea of Barbie. I never experienced going to the cinema and strangers giving each other compliments and so much pink 💗

I'm a 41-year-old straight white man. That being said, this is my favorite movie of the year. Obviously the story was mainly aimed at women and girls, but I think everyone could learn something from this movie. Not only that though, it's also legitimately funny throughout.

This '80s kid found it extra poignant that it's Rhea playing such a dear and sweet part. Also, how brilliant is Billie to have crafted that song.

btw, the perfection of Barbieland could be seen as the innocence of childhood being left behind in journey to the real world.

I adored this movie and have really enjoyed the conversations that have followed talking with friends about it. I think expectations matter a lot as to how people respond to the movie. I saw it earlier and expected it to be weird, but with a low bar. Most branded toy based movies are not great. But if you go in thinking this movie will be mind-blowing, I can understand that it may disappoint. The emotional depth and the way it held up a fun-house mirror to the world really surprised me. And that Billie Eilish song at the end was perfect ("I don't know how to feel, but I want to try... 😭) Thanks for sharing your reaction!

You could feel all the emotions Ken displayed just by his facial expressions, and you could tell how hurt he was & he didn’t want to hurt Barbie. His sad “I love you too” after being brutally shot down by Barbie, how he feels respected in the real world compared to Barbieland, seeing men have as much influence in the real world as Barbies do in Barbieland, telling Barbie “you failed me!” & “every night is boys’ night”, etc;

This is an incredibly deep movie, done in a fun, insightful, touching, and very real way. For the record, I'm a 57 year old man, married, have a grown up daughter. I watched this movie with my wife and we both loved it! And, I hope I can be a decent ally.

I loved this movie. Couple of things I’ll touch upon: - we all are different and that’s what makes us special. Strengths and weaknesses that complement each other. Vilifying, condemning, or belittling each other doesn’t help us grow and learn. - I have dear friends that were models. The levels of depression, self hate, self harm, and anxiety I witnessed is heartbreaking. They worked in an industry that nitpicked the tiniest “imperfection” to the point they only saw monsters in the mirror (even been seeing a minority voice of people ridiculing Margot’s appearance) when they are beautiful people. My friends and I saw the premiere. We all donned our pink and went in rooting for Barbie. We all came out rooting for Allen. The entire theater shouted for Allen whenever he showed up on screen.

I saw this movie with my 18 year old daughter and it destroyed me in the best way possible. I'm a single dad who has been trying very hard to help my beautiful girl feel worthy these last few years since she moved back in with me after she was abused by her mother. She has just gone off to college and watching this was our first real daddy-daughter outing since she moved away. It's one of the best movies I've seen in years, and I feel like it was able to express so much of what I want for her in a much better way than I am able to. When we left the theater, she asked me what part of the movie was funniest to me, and I didn't have an answer because the film packed way more of an emotional punch than I was expecting. I'm glad to see you react to this, and even the brief bits shown in this video was enough to tip me back over a couple of times. I've never identified with Rhea Perlman more in my entire life....minus the tax evasion.

Ryan Gosling's Ken was my favorite. I feel he was a standout in an incredibly talented cast. Talk about someone being able to do it all! Sing, play instruments, act and dance! I loved the movie. It was a very relevant human story with great lessons. Loved your reaction. Thanks!

I've seen the movie and reactions to it. Yours is my favorite, because you had your own character arc through it. So, thank you for the reaction and thank you for reacting to the movie. Also, whatever Greta Gerwig does next is going to be highly anticipated. Oh, and Pregnant Midge did have a baby, and Growing Up Skipper went through puberty when you twisted her arm. Look them up!

I think one of my favorite small things in this movie are all of the little mannerisms the background Kens throw in

Based on quick research, The preganant version of Midge could "have the baby" in a magnetically sealed pouch. But that caused controversy at the time as possibly promoting teen pregnancy. Nowadays that would probably be seen as a choking hazard.

I was not expecting to love this movie so much when I saw it in the theater. It was weird being an older man alone in that theater. I ended up taking my mom to see it too. It still hits me hard in the emotions.

In the beginning, the only Ken who has a problem with Barbieland is Ken, and his problem doesn't seem to have much to do with respect. Everyone greets him and his friends are considerate of him. His problem is that Barbie doesn't love him back, which she doesn't owe him. He took the incel's path to patriarchy and toxic masculinity and then did Jan 6. Of course they can't have a Supreme Court judge.

Yours is the reaction I was looking for! I'm a guy, and this movie was the first time I ever wanted to start collecting Barbies. The way our society works, it just has never been cool, for reasons described in the film. I hope, I BELIEVE that this film will do something drastically different in our society. The popularity of this film incites conflict and creates a dialogue that we don't speak about. I love what it's done and is doing.

When I was in my religious pre school in the mid-late 80s, I had a friend, a boy, who used to play with Barbies. And he used to run in a way that other boys would describe as "running like a girl". They would try to bully him about it at first, but he was the homie so I kind of made sure to nip that in the bud. I have no idea where he is now, but I hope he's out there somewhere still being himself, and living his best life. Made sure to see this in the theater and it was such an amazing movie. The manosphere, incel, anti-wokester backlash ironically was what was what got my wife and I intrigued. And I'm glad it did honestly

This movie was so great, it showed how the patriarchy and toxic masculinity affects men too. The speech at the end is exactly how us men feel too, we have to be fit, but you have to say you want to be healthy, but you have to be fit. You have to be good looking, but not too good looking that you threaten other men, or intimidate women. You have to be a leader, but you also have to be a team player, but you have to stand out. You're doing everything wrong and somehow it's all your fault. It showed me how women feel exactly how we feel because of this messed up system we have.

The Billie Eilish song tears me up. A perfect song for this movie. Great reaction.

When I watched this movie, every girl dressed up as Barbie! Biggest trend! Margot Robbie is amazing! ❤

I'm a 33 year old white guy who thinks this and Oppenheimer are equally fantastic. I'm still thinking about this film, trying to really take some ideas from it, because I think it's far more complex and layered than a lot of people will recognize. Almost everything in this movie is conceptual and metaphorical, not literal. Even the "real world" in this is a cartoonish, illogical twist on ours. While the pro-women things stand out and get the most attention, I don't think it's really the point. You're not supposed to walk away thinking that things are better in Barbie Land with the Barbies in charge. Because everything in their world exists as an extension of our ideas in the real world, they don't yet know how to create a truly "equal" society. Hence the line about the Ken's maybe one day having the same kind of power that women have in today's world (which is a tongue in cheek way of reminding the audience that the real world isn't there yet either). It was really frustrating hearing conservatives and insecure men whine about this movie being a man-hating, radical feminist, woke propaganda piece. The final scenes have some VERY healthy, pro-men messages. There's something to the entire concept of the Kens coming together and respecting each other through the least "manly" activities imaginable - an elaborately choreographed song and dance. And, of course, Barbie helping Ken realize that his existence shouldn't be devoted to pursuing her is something I think all men need to understand. That's the irony of the patriarchal society we've built. The pursuit of power, money, good looks...whatever it is, so many of us are doing it for one reason. I can tell you personally that being single, wanting attention from girls, and NOT being a man with any "power" is a weight on my mind that I struggle with. I know deep down that I'm more than how much money I have, how muscular I am, or if I can play guitar at a girl really well. I'm Kenough, just me. But that's a difficult thing to understand. I don't know what "me" is. And that's where we get to what I think the core of this movie is. It's about being human. The most poignant, memorable parts in this film are the bus stop scene, and the ending. In those moments, the experience of being human is represented as not living up to certain ideas, but as a collection of experiences. I need to think of that some more, because I don't want to pretend I know exactly what to take from it. Whoa, that was a longer comment than I thought I'd type. I just have to add that Margot Robbie is incredible. No words for her beauty, but you could list every little brilliant acting choice she made in this and have a book. She goes from one extreme to the other and nails every expression, every syllable with the perfect tone. Amazing crier, funny. We're witnessing a legend.

I’m so glad you reacted to this! What a movie! I find it interesting that ultimately the women and men feel inadequate. Both feel that they aren’t enough, but those feelings manifest in different ways.

You have to watch 2001 A Space Odyssey from1968 to see just how awesome that Barbie Entrance scene is. Plus, it's a genuine masterpiece.

Any concerns I had about this movie going in were dashed early. It's a thoroughly delightful - and hilarious! - movie, along with some deep insights into relationships and people. I was also glad to see Mattel had no problem making fun of themselves . . .

I loved it. The men who got angry about this are the ones who need to look inside. They have not yet realized they are Kenough.

One piece of trivia I love is that Ryan Gosling, who has described himself as a huge Doctor Who fan, is going to have a guest role in the upcoming season of the show because of Ncuti Gatwa's role in this movie.

When the movie first came out, a Facebook acquaintance of mine said, "Dear men, in spite of the message of the Barbie movie, some people still appreciate you." I asked if she had seen it yet, and she did not reply. LOL... But I didn't see that as the message at all. I get that Ken felt unappreciated in the beginning because he and Barbie needed to have the conversation they had at the end, but I still think that men aren't appreciated was far from the "message" of the movie. Quite the opposite, in fact... that we all have to know ourselves before we can really compliment another.

I want to see that "other movie" about Ruth vs. the IRS too! 😂

fun fact if you love Ryan Gosling: he was part of a musical project in the late 2000s called "Dead Man's Bones"! It's a horror folk album heavily featuring a children's choir that they worked with. I highly recommend you check it out, just in time for halloween :3 he's a lovely singer

This was such an awesome movie! From the writing and direction to the acting, it was all so well done. Barbenheimer was also a great theater experience, but you had to end it on Barbie haha

I saw this and I am 100% with the men commentary/satire. A lot of expectations are placed on what you do and not who you are and a lot of that has to do with preconceived notions of what you should be. It really hit the nail on how patriarchy stunts the growth of men and marginalizes everyone who isn't in charge. The comedy was so good. The social commentary on women's struggles I appreciated and even if some ppl get mad about it the message is still being heard.

I think the balance of having Greta Gerwig and her now husband, Noah Baumbach, both fantastic writers on their own, was the perfect yin/yang to write this script together. As great as everyone is in the film, Rhea Perlman was so great and that last scene with her just makes me cry every time. Also, fun fact: Barbie's real name is Barbara Millicent Roberts and Ken's is Kenneth Sean Carson, who came out 2 years later and was named after Ruth's son.

Hi from Italy, which is why I’m late to the conversation. As a baby boomer, I had all the early Barbies and Kens as well as Midge and Allan. To answer your question about pregnant Midge, her tummy would open up and a full term baby would come out. Also, Allen was Midge’s husband/ partner. When one Barbie went out of style, I made sure she would become a “Weird Barbie “ until my mother would buy me a the latest one. My father was against my playing with Barbie because he thought she was too “sexualized.” I feel Barbie helped me get through puberty and adolescence. The film resonated with me because I understood all the references, namely my generation was led to believe to become the “perfect mother and wife. “ Funny, my life journey turned out to be quite the opposite. Hope you don’t mind my chiming in so late in the game.

"Because it never has the baby, right?" Oh, no, it had the baby. That was entirely the problem. 😬 A fun little thing is that when the car spins earlier in the movie, it lands with Barbie and Ken still sitting in it because it was made for them. however, when the same thing happens later in the movie to the humans and Allen, they're all ejected out. I think, if you're going to do something silly and corny, like Barbie or Superheroes, it's absolutely imperitive that you be sincere about it and make that full dive. I remember when the Xmen movies tried to do the black leather costumes instead of the bright colours and it did not go well. This movie is definitely silly and absurdist but it's also really smart and I think that's why it works.

I laughed, cried, reflected, and had massive amounts of hope as I watched this. It is absolutely my favorite movie of the year! Between this and Ted Lasso, I was an emotional wreck all summer!!🤣

Cool reaction, and it hit all the beats that makes it a really good film, First the female director Greta Gerwig big congrats to her she is now has the biggest box office earnings for a female director to ever make a by a female director. For me personally i liked the film (even though its not the kind of movie i would necessarily watch either) but glad I made the decision to see it on the big screen, and am really happy I did. the film hit all the right beats, I'm also glad that they took the time to present both the good qualities of the Barbie doll over the years as well as its bad qualities, and that the filmmakers and Mattel were not shying away to let Greta Gerwig do that. The performances were wonderful, and it really did look like they had fun making the film, Fun fact, there was a world wide shortage on the particular styles of pink used in making the film in the painting of the sets and props (its surprisingly a hard set of pinks to reproduce so it was never in large supply) all in all really solid film, and i kind of hope they do not decide to make a sequel as it really feels like they should not add to much to more to the boundaries of what was set out to be said and done in this movie!

I cried in the movie theater with my best friend, then I cried again watching at home with my family. But I also thought it was super fun most of the time. A great movie in my opinion 😊

There is some killer fan art of the Avatar cast in the Barbie and Ken mugshot poses. You need to see them. My favorite is Toph and Katara in their red outfits. I also really like Lee and Mushi (Zuko and Iroh).

I was surprised by how deep this movie got, and I love it for that. It made me experience an existential crisis. I also love that this movie delves into the issue of patriarchy without presenting men as bad. It shows that they need understanding, too. Also, I'm totally dressing up as Barbie for Halloween!

When I went into this movie, I figured I wasn't the target audience... ...By the time I finished it, I realized I *was* the target audience 😭😭😭 I loved it. I convinced my buddy to watch it with me, and we both got tears through several parts of it, and we spent at least like a half hour talking about the different ideas and themes. Geez, what a good movie (although I knew it would be, since GG and NB wrote it).

Finally saw this yesterday, super super late to the power. Cried at the vision, the Billie Eilish song, and various bits. As a parent it's... very very very very relatable.

I adored this movie. I knew nothing about Barbie except that she’s a Problematic Feminist Fave for many women of a certain generation who have a lot of cultural power at the moment. And this movie handled all the nuances there with a lot of heart, humor, and compassion. I loved that it explored why patriarchy is bad without blaming men for everything, and I am disappointed in the many men who missed the point here. I proudly wore pink with my date to the movie and had a wonderful time in the theater, and “Hi, Ken”-ing other dudes who’d done the same as me. One of the best movies of 2023.
