Taigen doesn't know about Mizu. That's what makes that scene interesting and why he brushes off by saying he "misses Akemi".

Was hom-o-segguality that big if a deal in 16th century Japan? Or is this just hitting a nerve from our modern perspective? I'm just assuming it's a period story, and don't really care either way. But. Seems to be an issue for a lot of conversations.

@@3Kings_Industries I don't know if it's still the case, but they are pretty tolerant of it on young people, but when they grow up they're expected to be "proper". I was just clarifying the scene because Taigen doesn't know about Mizu's sexuality and it's interesting to see him have an attraction to someone he perceives as male.

@3Kings_Industries There was a sort of greek-esque pedastry amongst samurai and Buddhist monks in Japan called Nanshoku or Shudo between young apprentices and masters. Shinto and Zen Buddhism didn't have any particular anti homosexuality ethos at the time either. However adult male relationships were considered shameful and were expected to be kept on the down low.

I didn't catch this the first time, but she put in Akemi's small knife too. So she's including all these things she's collected from those people she's interacted with - Ringo's bell, Akemi's knife, Swordfather's tongs.. the meteorite metal..

@@Mr.Maryland_ are you sure that was Akemi's knife. Mizu made that knife, and hundreds others just like it. Have you noticed nearly every small knife in the show was made by Mizu? How can you be sure it's not a symbol of Mizu's childhood?

Fowler talking about his sister is one of my favorite scenes of the show. Heiji Shindo's face as he was talking about eating her kidneys is amazing, like he finally realizes that even after spending a decade with Fowler, he's just now realizing how absolutely evil he is. Love seeing Akemi learning how to truly gain and use the sort of soft power women of her society can achieve, and I love that the Shogun's son isn't an absolute monster but that it's basically all just an act. I like that Akemi is able to control her husband just by being kind to him. Also delighted that she got rid of those dumbass handmaidens.
@Sweet_Venom0027
@Sweet_Venom0027 7 ай бұрын
I wouldn't exactly call Fowler evil for what he did back then. He seemed to care for his sister, to try to keep her alive as long as he possibly could and safe guard her body after she passed so the other starving wouldn't eat her. He ate her kidneys out of pure survival, not because he enjoyed it. When he said that his mind goes back to that time, he said it like he refuses to ever be in such a hopeless and helpless situation ever again.

@@Sweet_Venom0027 He wasn't intrinsically evil because of what he did, i think he turned out deeply wrong because he was put in a position where he had to do unspeakable things to survive. I'm sure being forced to cannibalize your own family warps your perception of human worth.

Great reaction! Just want to mention that what Mizu wrote on her skin is the heart sutra in Mahāyāna Buddhism. This religion was quite popular in feudal Japan. The sutra is believed to have multiple layers of meanings and it also represents duality of existence, especially in the part of "The body is emptiness and emptiness body." The fact that Mizu's and Akemi's scenes intertwined seems to be highlighting this duality. Mizu withdrew from control to become more of herself. Akemi, on the other hand, stepped forward to control her life and people around her.

Did you notice the time skip? That thick snow on the way in, and several inches of ice on the way out means mid-winter. Fowler's march was planned for spring. I find this detail remarkably realistic that it took Mizu and Taigen that long to recover.

I have the tiny niggle that the passage of time is so understated that asking "did you notice the time skip?" is a reasonable question. The creators are giving the audience credit for being able to notice such things, which is good, on balance, I think.

At some point I'd like to rewatch the series and be on the lookout for more comparison/contrast between Akemi and Fowler. This episode had Fowler's story of eating the kidneys (contrasted with Akemi being made to eat a variety of animal parts including the bird she cared for), and also the "I want to be in control of my life" (Akemi) vs. "I control my life now" (Fowler). It seems like the suggestion is that Akemi might be on a path to becoming like Fowler.

There's a lot to creating a samurai sword. Years ago the science program Nova did an episode about creating a samurai sword called Secrets of the Samurai Sword. It showed not only the science involved but also the spirituality in creating a sword. The different prayers used for each step step of the process. Smelting the metal alone takes 72 hours of constant monitoring. No sleep for the men until it's done with no guarantee that the metal will be suitable to use. If you can find the Nova episode and are interested in how a samurai sword is made, I highly recommend watching it.

Agreed; Ringo is my hero. 😃 I finished the season yesterday and am very impressed. The acting is emotionally evokative, the animation is fascinating and appears to my rather uneducated (in the ways of animation) eyes to be perhaps the best rotoscoping I've ever seen. If it's not rotoscoping then the animators have mastered human movement. When I heard Min-Na Wen's voice I had to look up the cast and it's as stellar as as one would suspect for such an outstanding acheivement. It kills me to write this but, this was as good as LoVM and if they compete for awards I'll be torn as to whom to root for.

Taigen doesn't know Mizu is a woman. I'm not saying this to be crass, but simply to address Taigen's specific comment: speaking as a man, no man needs two hands to piss. Taigen was just making the point that the very large, powerful man didn't need a weapon at all. In regards to Taigen getting..."excited"...while wrestling with Mizu: in the Edo period of Japan, and in much of Asia before Christianity showed up, homosexuality was entirely normal in some of the cultures. Taigen is attracted to Mizu; it's not about the gender or sex of the characters involved. But considering the contentious relationship they have had their whole lives, he plays it off as "missing Akemi".

Where was Taigen? Being brutally tortured and refusing to give up a single detail about Mizu. You're reading it wrong. Akemi's alternative is to become a courtesan at Madam Kaji's whorehouse. Do you think she'll just be reciting renga to all her clients? To Mizu's calculation, being married to a shogun's son is the better option.
@troikas3353

@@Mr.Maryland_ Akemi was only there to find Mizu, there's no chance she would have stayed there. But that's beside the point anyway. Mizu's path of revenge is an inherently selfish and destructive one, something the show's been pretty blunt about honestly, and this is just another in a string of choices and actions shes taking which is bringing her down a dark path. As Taigen is risking his life and enduring horrific pain just to protect Mizu's identity, Mizu is walking away from a woman in need because it would inconvenience her to help. However Mizu wants to rationalize it to herself, that is what happened. Moreover both Taigen and Akemi are only in these situations in large part because Mizu barged into the dojo to start with and made demands of total strangers in their own home. Like as far as Akemi is concerned, Mizu literally ruined her life just as passing collateral damage.

Taigen doesn't logically know she's a woman but his body def realized kt the moment she straddled him and had her face up close to his. The eyes don't look masculine for a 1600s japan male.

Taigen is bi confirmed ;p The show kind of makes it "ok" by saying that Mizu is actually a woman, although I would say Mizu is coded nonbinary/genderfluid, but I don't think the show (as good as it is) will address that. Especially as Mizu is only living as a man to avoid societal issues and enact her (their?) revenge. The show toys with (and I know a lot of people wish) with her also being bi, but there's no large evidence for it. As to Taigen, I think the "hand free piss" is intended to be an emasculation. I.E., Mizu doesn't stand or is lacking in "length". I don't see any evidence of Taigen knowing Mizu is AFAB.
