This show is soooo good. Ringo functions as the moral center. While Mizu is the main character, she has a fatal flaw - her unquenchable thirst for vengeance.
@McBeelzebub
@McBeelzebub 6 ай бұрын
What’s weird is that it’s not really even vengeance. She wants to murder someone for the crime of siring her. She’s an anti-hero at best, illustrated in no small part by the title of the show as she is not a samurai.

By the way, that "hat" that Ringo wears on his head is the sign from the noodle shop. He hit his head chasing after Mizu and decided to use the sign as a hat. It's not a "thing" they do in Japan, it's really just a Ringo thing.

Seeing Taigen with other women before his engagement speaks to his station. And that's the first thing he mentions to Mizu about being taken from him. I believe he truly loves Akemi but he's just indulging as men of station and honor tended to do at that time. You are gonna love this series.

The scene where the “white guy” cuts the table has to be rewatched carefully. It’s done at full speed but somehow gives a slow-motion effect at the same time. And if you really pay attention, he’s able to strum the harp strings from his swing (you can hear it AND see the strings vibrate). This show is insanely good!!

Most of the time I skip the intro and discussion from other youtubers cause they either dont make sense at all or they just boring. That’s the difference between cultures. In Japan dishonour is worse than death. He would be fine with Mizu killing him, but he was humiliated and beaten. The only two paths he would have are seppuku or a way to restore his honour.

I started watching this channel to scratch the blue eye Samauri itch, but I gotta say: You're one of the more intelligent, insightful, and enjoyable reaction channels I've seen. You have a great energy to you and its fun to hear you pick up on small details. I feel like with a lot of reaction chanels, its hard to tell if they really "get" the shows theyre watching, but its very obvious you do. Keep up the great work! Subscribed. 😊

The "club" big henchman guy uses is a tetsubo or kanabo. It's basically just that. A wooden (sometimes metal) full of spikes. The intention is to mess your opponent's insides even when he is using armor, but it's considered to require a HUGE amount of strength to properly use. But I think generic henchman big guy can handle.

I wonder if Seki also paid the Brigands to attack. They didn't fight him, and Akemi didn't see the worst side of them. Taigen still has a long way to go. He seeks honor, but he has zero empathy. Dying for Mizu in that icy passage would have meant dying in honor to stroke his ego. He does not accept his defeat, he insults her with the cruel death of her mother and pretends she could ever forget their hometown as if her life there wasn't worse than his (until she learned to know the swordmaker). Mizu is of course egoistic too but she doesn't insult her enemies until they insult her as if they didn't just see her skills.

Now that there's going to be a Season 2, I wonder if they will address the genetics of how Mizu has blue eyes? It's not really that important, but supposedly, the Ainu are an indigenous people who came to Japan through the Sakhalin Islands, which are now part of Russia, who could possess a recessive gene for blue eyes. Getting into the politics/history of how the Ainu were treated during this time period might be interesting.

Loving this show. And your reactions. I binged this whole season in one night. When this is over, you've *got* to check out Arcane. It too is one of those animated series in which each frame is worthy of a screenshot and desktop wallpaper. That and the story is incredible. Netflix is really hitting it out of the park with these series. Arcane, One Piece (Live Action), now Blue Eye Samurai, and soon.. Avatar the Last Airbender. This is definitely a great time to have Netflix.

What's the difference between a kanabō and a tetsubō(sp?)?
@b_g_c3281
@b_g_c3281 Ай бұрын
@wcookiv That's a 'damn good question! It seems that there's ((still)) a bit of dispute as to whether there _is_ a difference: Some argue that one [ the kanabō ] is predominantly, if not solely(?) a two-handed weapon ((not quite as long as a staff, but requiring two hands nonetheless)), whilst the other [ the tetsubō ] could be wielded one-handed or with two hands... Apparently, there's additional arguments that the difference is wholly linguistic, that is to say, cultural vis-à-vis across the span of eras... [[ ...There _might_ be some pertinence/validity to this presumption, based on how _some_ items, objects, household items and tools, and weapons did receive more than one descriptor/name over the _centuries_ ...feudal Japan lasted roughly 700 years, and there were centuries upon centuries of culture prior to the rise of the first Shōgūn in the late 12th Century...

This show reminds me of Samurai Champloo, but without the stunning animation, fast paces tension, and brilliant comedy/general writing. One joke from Samurai Champloo in episode 1 they cut and it says "1 day earlier", it cuts to a modern day Japanese street with a random guy walking past dancing to pop music. It says "1 day earlier!" and the whole scene rewinds deconstructing the city and resuming on a samurai main character walking down the same dirt road.

i noticed how many reactors are incensed by the treatment of women. women have been 2nd class citizens almost all cultures til recently in relative terms. a more accurate depiction is preferable to a period piece that rejiggers the culture w modern mores. i'd find that much more insulting. perhaps it's the relative youth of reactors unaccustomed to the reality of the past.
