Workers Party MP George Galloway this week left a junior minister, David Rutley, speechless momentarily by launching a furious attack as he sought to highlight the government’s hypocrisy on the Gaza conflict.
The incident took place earlier this week when Rutley, who was standing in for junior foreign minister Andrew Mitchell. Rutley, who Galloway said was a 'nice chap' appeared to be in a shock momentarily as he took more than seven seconds to compose himself before answering Galloway's question.

October 7th?...I just heard Gassam Kanafani's "Letter from Gaza" written in 1955 and read by John Berger (available on KZfaq) about visiting his niece who had had her leg blown off by Israeli bombs. He himself, a beautiful soul, a poet and journalist, was assassinated by Mossad, aged 36, in 1972 in Beirut...it did not start on October 7th. Hamas drew the attention of the world to a 75 year old genocide on October 7th. Now the world knows and can never un-see the things that Israel has done and how it has corrupted all the governments of the West with money and gifts so that it could carry on its ethnic cleansing, its theft of land, its mass murder of children, its total destruction of the means to sustain life for the indigenous and peaceful people of Palestine.

Israel has NO "right to defend itself". As an occupying power, Israel has no such right to defend itself from those it occupies, only an obligation to end its occupation. This was made clear by UN Resolution 37/43 from 1982. It specifically notes "...the denial of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination, sovereignty, independence and return to Palestine and the repeated acts of aggression by Israel against the peoples of the region..." and therefore "Reaffirms the legitimacy of the struggle of peoples for independence, territorial integrity, national unity and liberation from colonial and foreign domination and foreign occupation by all available means, INCLUDING ARMED STRUGGLE” (emphasis added).

I, unfortunately, have been following UK politics since 2014. (The Scottish Independence Referendum). No matter how ridiculous politics in my country, (Canada), have been from time to time, I am somewhat mollified by the realization that it has never degenerated into the depths of overt corruption, cynical doublespeak, gaslighting and outright incompetence that the years from 2016 to date have been. How many de@d Palestinians are enough? 100,00; 200,00 or is the number six million? What is number is going to be enough to satisfy the Israeli, UK, EU and US bloodlust. Having served as a UN Peacekeeper, in Lebanon, Egypt and Gaza in 1978, (I was amongst the first 25 Canadians into Lebanon), the people that seemed the most 'difficult', were not the Lebanese or Palestinians. And unless you've been there and observed first-hand, (without prejudice), you have no idea what the Lebanese or the Palestinians have endured in the last 40+ years. This situation is not normal. It is inhuman and inhumane on a multitude of levels. This situation shames us all. History will not look kindly upon us for our behaviours and actions. There is nothing to be proud of here.
