A comparison between exponential, linear, and through zero FM, using the Endorphin.es Furthrrrr Generator's normal analog triangle core oscillators and the optional digital Strong Zero Core oscillator.

This is hour 50 or something of watching modular demos/tutorials, and the most informative I've seen yet. The progression through the mod depth, waveforms, and type is a wave of its own! I had been wondering about what through-zero meant, and here it is right in perfect contextual examples. The illustration of filter-effects without literal filters towards the end... that's exactly what I wanted to know! And then the same thing with that ace chiptune layer on top.

I love the sounds of these Endorphin.es modules! I think that I want a full Endorphin.es modular to go with my Elektrons and Make Noise system. That and an Intellijel setup would be ideal.

Thanks for the great lesson. So zero thought is just like linear FM but just with better tuning making the sounds more useful pitch tracking keyboard and allowing greater modulation? Does linear have its own quirks create interesting sounds that zero through can't do or not really? Exponential sounds can't be achieved with Linear or Zero through can they? Are the Rubicon and Zero Oscillator the other 2 alternatives?

Sorry for the slow reply. Yes, in most cases you can think of thru zero as being "linear FM on steroids". That said, some manufacturers are trying to add new twists, such as deciding at what point the waveform reverses. You won't get the same sounds between linear and exponential FM, as the amount of up/down pitch shift is different between the two. The Rubicon II and Zeroscillator are two great options.

Using sync with the non-thru zero FM (Linear and EXP) is my favorite way to make rich timbres on the DPO. I am curious how it sounds with the digital core.

Hey Chris, do you know if the Intellijel Dixie 2+ has a pure sinewave? I have a feeling it's really close

It's not bad. It does have a bit of 2nd and a little more 3rd harmonic in it as well, but overall it's better than average for an analog VCO.

Why would installing the digital core as the modulator vs carrier cause loss of low end?

The digital core does not support an LFO mode.

Thanks, Chris. I am a Patreon supporter of yours for a while now, but can only find some of the videos by scrolling through back a number of months. The Endorphin.es tag doesn't seem to bring them all up - could it be some tags (e.g. Endorphin.es, complex oscillator, etc.) are missing from some of the videos? Anyways, found them now, and many thanks for doing these - the number of modules I've purchased based on your courses is quite impressive, actually :-)

I think it's worth it. Plus you get to keep the original analog triangle core chip, so you can swap it back in if you want.

They've already been released through the extended Eurorack Expansion course available through learningmodular.com/training/. If you're curious, as a general rule, when a manufacturer helps me get their module to create videos, all of the resulting videos are public and free, When I have buy the module out of my own pocket, then the people who help me buy the modules - my Patreon supporters and those who buy my courses - get to see all of the movies I create for that module. Regardless, I make the intro movies for every module public and free. I also disable ads own KZfaq so everyone gets to watch the available movies without interruptions.

@@Nick-kb6jd Since the original Eurorack Expansion course was created for Lynda/LinkedIn, I have continued to add more modules. Lynda/LinkedIn was not set up to take these additional movies, so I now host the extended version of Eurorack Expansion on the Learning Modular web site (learningmodular.com/register/learning-modular-synthesis-eurorack-expansion/). There are now over 150 movies in the course (including ones covering this module), with plans to add many more.

They're part of the Eurorack Expansion course on courses.learningmodular.com . I decided to make parts 1 and 2 public as they were general concepts I thought would benefit a lot people.
