Hi Jim, I am working of course at the last minute to make some Christmas projects. I just watched your video on the snowflake color de verre mold. found it ver useful. I am about ready to program my kiln. My question is I have a larger two snowflake mold and also a smaller one, which has two snowflake mold and a color de verre mold. Can I fire them at the same time with the same schedule. I also bought the icicle color de verre mold on which has four icicles and has a firing schedule. Have you ever fired these together? If so what schedule did you use.
@JamaisonSchuler
@JamaisonSchuler 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I’ve never used the icicles mold before but I fire all my snowflakes using that same schedule posted in the video notes, no matter what size they are, all in the same load! I would assume you can do the same with the icicles too.

You mentioned the ‘rebar’ on the center vein…will dichroic glass work? Have you tried using very chunky glass? How did that turn out? Before everyone comes at me, I’m trying for ideas? I’m making ALOT of notes, I’m getting ideas and opinions. I have nit even bought my kiln yet. I really want to know.
@JamaisonSchuler
@JamaisonSchuler Жыл бұрын
I have not tried dichroic but would think it would be fine? I have not used larger chunks as that was not the look I was going for but I’m certain it could be cool, just need to fine-tune a firing schedule that gets you the outcome you are looking for.

In Wash DC area I sell large ones for $25 and small ones for $10. It makes it much more economical to get more than one mold and do them in batches. Also as you get the hang of them, they take less time to make. He was going through this slowly to make teaching points.

How do you know when you need to use a new coat of zyp and can you please add a link for the spray - your snowflakes are looking good! thank you
@JamaisonSchuler
@JamaisonSchuler 3 жыл бұрын
Gosh, as long as the snowflakes lift out nicely, I don’t worry about reapplying Zyp. If there are any noticeable scratches or flakes missing that look like it’s exposing the ceramic, that’s when I brush out some of the old Zyp and reapply. A link to Zyp spray? I use the aerosol version, and lots of online retailers carry it (in the US). I would prefer not to favor one particular seller.

You do you have to put kiln wash on the mold?
@lindacondray7918
@lindacondray7918 2 жыл бұрын
That’s what the ZYP is! It’s a mold release recommended by the mold company because it better fills the mold pores without loosing mold details than brush on kiln wash. It’s expensive, but lasts a very long time on the mold and less likely to stick to the glass.

What options do you have when the glas sticks into the mold? I used shelfprimer but maybe not enough. I want to get it out without ruining my mold....
@JamaisonSchuler
@JamaisonSchuler 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve often read to elevate the mold and reheat it until the glass comes out. These are very delicate molds so you don’t want to do much poking and prying. I believe the manufacturer recommends boron nitride spray for these molds.

You mean elevate upside down?

@JamaisonSchuler 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, although the snowflake molds are deep enough you may not need to elevate? The mold maker - Colour de Verre -- is very responsive. I would find an email for them and reach out for their expertise. Don’t just ask a guy on KZfaq. 😉

I am SO frustrated with these snowflake molds!! I cannot get the amount of frit correct. I've weighed it, I've eyeballed it, I've educated guessed it and still I end up with anorexic flakes that I have to fire again or obese flakes with no definition. I am tempted to give up but the molds were so expensive i can't justify quitting. Grrrrrrr!
