Thanks Lars for all of your Fusion 360 videos. I have been trying to learn as much about 3D modeling as time will allow since receiving a 3D printer for Christmas. Another great great video Lars. Time well spent. I'm pouring through these before I subscribe. I feel I stand a good chance to hit the ground running once I get signed up for the software. If I didn't have 2D experience, I don't believe the videos would make a ton of sense....... but this is all quite clear and straightforward, just seemingly endless in possibility. So, I've got some projects on the front burner and videos like these keeping this goal warm on the back burner. Thanks.

Great job! I really appreciate the more technical content. I watch the recordings of the live stream and find myself getting frustrated at some of the technique repetition at the end of each of the segments and find myself fast forwarding to get to the next tip / technique as if I didn't fully grasp it or missed it I could always rewind. This is a minor thing and I really enjoy your videos. Keep it up!

The technique of using a "layout solid" is something I have to try myself on some future project. Awesome idea thanks for the excellent video. Despite what some are saying I am very happy with the "slow speed" of your videos because it gives my brain a chance to absorb what is being shown. Also what makes fusion so awesome, it does not have such a long history and therefore it is full of fresh ideas! Nice.

I can see how joints work well for simple geometries. But from what I've experienced so far, the simplicity quickly turns to being cumbersome and unintuitive when I have complex geometries and multiple components. My problem has been that the components I work with often do not have nice sharp edges and corners, and being restricted to using joint origin points as opposed to surfaces for mates makes it tricky. I also have to deal with odd positioning (e.g., clamps in various orientations around a part on a mill table). I have recently been working on a setup for a mill, and after a few hours of trial and error and several tutorial videos later I was no closer to getting this thing put together, which would have taken me all of 2 minutes in SolidWorks or NX. I finally got it to work by only using planar joints and restricting degrees of freedom a couple at a time, a very roundabout way to get the same result as in SolidWorks. It's worth considering that there might be a reason the other major CAD systems do mates/constraints/etc. a certain way. Restricting degrees of freedom one or two at a time is simple, quick, and intuitive. And it stays simple, quick, and intuitive regardless how complex the components are or how many components there are. Don't get me wrong, I really like using Fusion for the most part, having come from many years of Mastercam, Solidworks, and NX. I think they took a big step backwards on this though.

I need Inventor and Fusion to have a baby. Coming from Inventor I have to agree that Fusion is much more streamline and user friendly and are perhaps looking at things fundamentally from a better angle. But Inventor gives me much more control over the drawings, bill of materials, reuse of parts, and large assemblies. I also really need something similar to iParts in Fusion. Overall the Fusion's user interface is really refreshing and a treat to use. Thanks for the good videos.

In my experience this becomes very clunky and cumbersome to move anything around. If you define offsets with parameters, it becomes much easier to modify values in that table but that is also time consuming to setup.

Every tutorial explains the same “joint” process over snd over. A cylinder in a cylinder or a face to face or corner to corner is all fine and easy. However, for engineers working with clearances, we’re not always dealing with cylinders. What would be nice to know is... say you have a rectangle bar stock sliding back and forth inside a rectangular/broached opening. In Solidworks, all i need to do is select all 4 sides of what i want aligned and hit mate. It will center that part. I then do the same for the other 4 surfaces and it centers again. Now i have my part centered with even gap all around even if the gap one way is not equal to the other way. How do i do that in Fusion? Cheers, Ken

I think from 11:37 creating your own "joint origin" will help you a lot. I agree these joints are painful.
@Acoustic_Theory
@Acoustic_Theory 4 жыл бұрын
@@AdrianTregoning It took me 30 minutes to figure out that a Joint Origin was what I needed to make my model work at all the way I wanted to constrain it. It was 30 minutes of frustration and rage, and I destroyed a perfectly good mouse in the process. And I still have to open each individual part model to create the joint origin in that model; you can't work with parts natively within assembly models because Autodesk has decided you don't need that functionality.

Lars: I have a question concerning bodies and components. What are bodies for? What use does it have? The reason I ask is that you can't create a joint with a body, you have to convert the body to a componet. So WHY have bodies at all and not just have them all be components from the get go? I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to Fusion360 but maybe you can explain this to me. Thanks. Liker dine videoer, fortsett med det. Hilsner fra Norge;)

It is a pretty genius system but it does suck when working a lot with aluminium profiles as they tend to have rounded edges. And since you can't joint round edges properly, it becomes quite tedious (not to mention imprecise) to mess around with all sorts of manual offsets. I wish Fusion would allow is both approaches when it comes to the freedoms.

Lars Christensen Thanks. I found that method the "long way"...I also use the Offset Plane method and they both work fine for me but unlike say, a threaded bolt where the "half moon" can snap to points on the face I thought there might be another way to maybe snap to the central axis of a coil/spring at one end...? Cheers for all the tutorials, I've only just started with Fusion and I'm liking it. 👍👍

Everybody is showing these simple geometries in their tutorials for f360. What if I don't want to make an assembly that looks like the toys of a 2 year old? I miss functions like tangential, concentric, coincident etc. To position parts in a way that is not what the program is guessing. Sometimes this function might work great, but if f360 doesn't know what I want to do it's just very frustrating. Another thing is that parts are just floating around after I assemble them and I have to glue them together in a rigid group which is absolutely horrible from a construction standpoint. Whenever you want to change sth. pieces just stay where they have been and you gotta do everything from scratch again... If someone has help for those struggles, would be awesome

Just use a Joint :) you can use basically any point on the parts as a reference and you can move them in relation to each other when placing the joint, if there is no points that naturally line up.

@ubbeus

If your model in Inventor blows up when you change the parts, you’ve made the joints/mates in the wrong way. Top down modeling, constraints to work features instead of faces and edges and you don’t have a problem. Try to make joint to a work feature in F360 - you cannot. So you actually cannot make the joints as early as you can do in Inventor. Still like the video, though. Joints are hard to get your head around if you’ve been in Inventor world for at least a decade...:)

Hey Lars, how about suggesting to the guys that there be some extra controls over the push-pull/extrude "operation" setting? What I mean is, when you're extruding stuff and all the pieces need to be new bodies or new components but they are touching already existing bodies or components, Fusion automagically sets it to "JOIN". That ain't cool. I find that 90% of the time JOIN is NOT what I want. Instead I have to click to change it every single time. I saw you deal with this during this video. I want some extra controls over the defaults for this. Don't you?

I spent about half an hour last night trying to constrain an assembly model in F360 and in between pounding on the desk and ripping the buttons off my mouse (RIP Razer Diamondback, my favorite mouse for the last 15 years) in abject frustration while trying to get the assembly model ready to deliver, I was asking myself the same thing. Do they expect someone to pay for this product? I'm about to say "F U" to "FU"sion 360 and just save up for a seat of SolidWorks.
