Testing out some funky synth action from the much anticipated Future Impact Bass Synthesizer. Video starts with some preset 'Deep Impact' Emulated sounds. Then I go into specific presets that I created to show off the pedal a bit more.
Bass Used: Dingwall ABZ Six String
Other effects used: TC Electronic Mini HOF, Chase Bliss Tonal Recall

Synths in popular music are as prominent as they've ever been! If anything, synth/keybass is becoming more and more vital in live bass rigs.

Zach - love your reviews!! I got this Future Impact (FI) pedal. I play a violin with octave strings, that makes it sound like a cello. I have a fair amount of tracking problems and also polyphony problems with FI, when an open string remains "ringing" and I pluck a different string....QUESTION: would an analog synth not have the polyphony problem? Any thoughts on synths to try?

Great job. Really fascinating pedal. Just a couple of questions: Does it have any issues with active basses/input level? Also, I'm looking for a pedal that can cop those fat 80's Devo mini Moog bass tones. (The EHX Synth9 pedal does a good job nailing that tone, but I don't know how well it works on bass and this pedal's far more versatile). Thanks

Perhaps a silly technical question: what are you using to to trigger the MIDI Program Change +1? I have a Boss Ms-3 that I'd love to use to scroll through FI presets but haven't quite cracked the code. Thanks, again, for your excellent videos.

How does this compare with the Source Audio C4? Can you get a Moog Synth Bass ( with accurate tracking ) that would work for Dance Music ? Nice demo. Enjoyed it. oNe LovE from NYC

thanks for your reply! My bass is an active Zon vb6 with bartolini humbuckers and electronics. So my question is do you think my bass would respond well with the future impact? You are great with pedals so I just wanted your expertise before I purchase the FI.

The FI has had significant improvements to the tracking and a raft of new features since this demo was made. Check out the demos of v3 and v3.5.

You state that the pedal is "totally digital", but according to the processing block diagrams for the FI1, it shows that the four synth voices are Voltage Controlled Oscillators. I get that there is a DSP chip reading and translating the bass input signal, but with VCO, wouldn't the synth output signal then be analog, making this a "digitally controlled analog pedal"? I honestly don't know which is why I am asking. Debating between getting this pedal and the OOP Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer. Any experience with the OS and/or comparisons between the OS and FI1?

Just curious, what happens when you plug in fretless bass? Will synth follow pitch of bass, or just quantize notes like frets?

it follows pitch, no quantising. just try to bend notes, it is essentially the same for the pedal :-)

I can't believe there's a sequel to the deep impact now. still way too expensive for the deep impact being sold for as little as $60 when they were clearing stock, but it's nice to see there's an alternative now.

Problem is, nothing else on the market can even come close to the Future Impact so they can charge whatever they want. I agree though, $499 is way too much to ask.

hello i got mine and i connected it through midi cable to my laptop . now i can write presets made by other peoples to FI without any problem . but when i m trying to make my own preset, i cant listen to currently editing preset's sound with bass, keyboard, virtual keyboard im unable to try it before i save and write it on FI. :(

Where can I find a list showing the type of sound is in each bank and program. I have printed the manual. But it references info about editing and midi mostly. Thanks

Honestly I have no idea. Best bet is probably to reach out to them directly and see. It would be tough to list out the 'type' of sound explicitly in text. Describing sound quality is not the easiest thing.

I need this pedal in my life! At the same time I'm a bit intimidated by the possibilities, as if it would be wrong to only use 2-3 sounds and not to mess with it too much. Great demo, I didn't even know it had a virtual interface. EDIT: I don't really understand how you're able to use the editor. Do you have to connect the pedal to an interface via MIDI to be able to edit?

How's the tracking? Usually the issue with this kind of pedals is always there. From the video it sounds good, but you never know!

Good to hear, considering how much this thing cost! I might buy it, is the pedal that goes closer to a proper bass synth, although for the same price I could purchase a keyboard, a bass synth and pay the lesson to learn how to play it :-D

I'm not keen on new pedals needing a computer editor...at some point in the future, the software won't work - then the pedals will be stuck with whatever presets were on them last time they were changed. None of them are going to become like the legendary first issue Dallas Arbiter Fuzzface or Tonebender or EHX Clone Theory, or even first issue Boss pedals are they really...

You did a GREAT job at showing its capabilities. Oh last one : I see you play a multiscale fretboard. I'm thinking of buying me a new bass as well. I was lurking at the new Ibanez EHB line.
