Future of Vancouver Island Rail Corridor - Liberals have failed to consult

People on Vancouver Island have been left wondering whether this government deems public rail worth saving.
A deadline was set by the B.C. Court of Appeals for this government to decide if the Island Rail Corridor should continue to exist.
That deadline is next month, and this government hasn’t conducted consultation with the First Nations whose territories the rail line runs through.
Being unable to keep the trains running on time is one thing but sitting by while infrastructure falls into disrepair is another.
Why have the Liberals been asleep at the switch, and failing to conduct appropriate consultation?

@alistairmacgregor5733 thank you for this speech. One week and counting though till the deadline and still no news. Once rail is gone there will be no hope to get it back. It's sad that there is a business case for the rail to exist, it just needs commitment from the Gov't.

There is actually NO buisiness case for the rail. It does not make sense for the taxpayers to cover hundreds of millions or billions for a rail that no longer can go to Victoria, has too steep and windy a railbed, does not have any freight planned for the Malihat section, has no freight infrastucture left. This train can only be a slow tourist train that will worsten traffic in the areas it goes through. Keep the corridor for the future when the population of the island reaches into the millions so that a raised high speed commuter system will have a buisiness case.

@@joeblough2485 first, even if you are correct about the steep pitch, there is enough rail freight throughout the island to justify it. Second, the most recent report indicates that revenue from freight alone would cover the investment. Third, if the government doesn’t announce an investment today, they lose the whole thing. Period. No future use. The cost of repurchasing the land (along the same or different route) will far outweigh the cost of the maintenance.

@@calebkz The province pledged 18 million today to further study the corridor. Not sure who gets that money or what it is used for yet. Just a stall imo. It appears first nations will get the land north of Nanaimo back. The studies you refer to were mostly done by the ICF. Those guys can't be trusted. In the studies, public was led to believe freight would travel the Malahat and rail would go into Victoria. etc.etc.... Too many lies to list. Crooks with CEO fat salaries that only have one goal.

More blah, blah, blah from the ndp. Quit propping up the Trudeau gov't, then you might actually gain some credibility
