Join us this weekend as we get stuck into boat work on our Franchini 45L, which we purchased in February 2024 as complete beginners with big dreams!
We enjoyed the beautiful summer solstice this weekend on board and set to on some odd jobs which have been on our tick list. We got down and dirty in the bilges, found some hidden surprises, re-organised the galley and attempted to fix one of our heads!
In this video, we talk in more depth around ourselves, our future plans and what we will be up to over the next few months. We hope you enjoy and thank you to everyone for their support so far, it means the world!

As someone already commented the copper braid could be part of your bonding system where all metal items in contact with seawater are typically bonded together and back to a common anode. The metal bonding needs to include any metal piping that carries seawater as well. If you have say rubber joiners connecting bits of metal seawater piping the two metal pipes must be electrically connected across the rubber joiner etc. The bonding also needs to include your prop shaft, and this is sometimes done with a carbon brush running on the shaft inside the boat, or a bonded connection across any shaft coupling (drive saver etc) to the gearbox if it isn't already solid metal. If this isn't something your surveyor has already checked you should both visually check for the bonding connections and confirm them with an ohmmeter. If you find unbonded metal such as seacocks etc then pull them, strip them, and check them internally unless you already know their condition. Unbonded metal will eventually be a boat sinker. As already mentioned though the copper may be part of a lightening protection system, or even some sort of earthing connection to a ground plate under the hull if you have one for an SSB or something like that requiring a proper grounding system. Good luck with your boat work. Been there many times and it is always a bit daunting to get started with.

Heya! I just found your channel and I'm bingewatching every video! I love your honest communication, don't worry about any video-format or windy background noises, it's more than enjoyable to watch nonetheless and you'll get the hang of it sooner rather than later :) Foremost: You've mentioned that your blueprints and some stuff is written in german language... as thats my mother tongue I'd gladly offer my help, just hmu! I can't promise anything, but I'd be happy to help and try! =) Sailing recently became a dream of mine as well, so I'm really looking forward to your journey! Hi there. Yes, that is a flat copper ground wire connecting all through hulls. In my case they rotted away. With enough zincs under the waterline it should not be problem if you dispose of the broken ones. As to the fridges not working, I realized that on my Franchini, it was due to bad connections on the cables of the two compressors. You should find them approximately underneath the swivel chair. Loosen the connections and spray some WD40 if they look ok. Maybe you clean them with some sanding paper beforehand. All the best. Regards, Silvano

For longer trips, you will want to plan ahead and find areas for more/larger freezer and refrigeration. Anywhere you can find a place for cold storage, plan for it so when the funds are available, you'll be ready. Absolute most needed will be internet access and a good watermaker (if you don't have one yet). Please do not travel without a reliable water source.

I can highly recommend getting the Delonghi Dedica 685 Espresso Machine. You do need a seperate grinder for the beans. It does everything and it is light and small and it never breaks. Alternatively, if you want to just press a button get the Melitta Cafeo Solo. Both machines are inexpensive and easy to clean. Cheers

The 'copper' strap is ground bonding connecting any metalic through hull fittings, bronze cutless bearing on the prop shaft to the inside of the annode bolts usually. Its helps prevent galvanic corrosion on those items. It also might be connected to the bottom of the mast as a lightening conductor. The bits you can see in the bilge are a part of your ballast. Some boats have solid keels and added mass in the form of steel "offcuts/pellets" set in the polyester resin (same resin the boats built from) in the bilge. Loving the videos. Keep up the good work.

Plant won’t stay on a table in a monohull sailing boat. You also need to fill your cupboards better as live aboard sailors. 2 cupboards for spices is crazy, and your boat has a lot less stowage space than ours. We have been living onboard full time all year round for i years now.

Also, (sorry lots of comments from me, I sailed professionally in the mega yacht industry for 12 years, 3 Trans Atlantic crossings on sail yachts) line cupboards and drawers with non skid, so stuff doesn't roll around. Everything in your kitchen cupboards will fall over unless its jammed in (ie cupboards full). The noise of stuff banging around in cupboards/drawers will do your head in when you're exhausted in the middle of a night crossing and just want to sleep. 😂

As they are at the moment the first time you hit a wave the stuff in those cupboards will come crashing out... Great Boat. Definitely need to reconnect the ground strap - try to find out where both ends go and check for continuity - without it you may find that your prop dissolves. I too am in a mixed marriage. Just come across the channel and love your interaction and effort. Regards the toilet staining, if it’s sea water flush, then that’s why it’s smelly and stained, I would recommend changing to fresh water flushing as there will be less staining and smell. If you have left sea water in the bottom bowl the microbes and sea water is causing the smell as it ferments like over time ,; given you are only getting there for the weekend or every other that’s the problem. It would be less smelly if it were being used every day. Hope that helps. The copper bonding being broken is an issue which you will need to take a look at as that will lead back to a below water grounding on the outside of the hull. I haven’t seen any other episodes as yet so don’t currently know what she’s made of, but if it’s a metal hull, then be aware of electrolysis, leakage, which will erode your anodes. It still applies if it’s a fibreglass boat and or wood, so watch out for two different metals touching (through holes, etc, as that can also cause damage and erosion, which can lead to delambination issues. More when I have caught up. Regards. John

HI , if you are open to advice I would like to help . First crimping wires will fail 10 times faster in a boat , you need to solder wire joints if you dont have dedicated marine conectors and also a small wet and dry vacuum will save hours of sponging up water . dont go for the fancy house types but find a workshop type , much better price and more durable. and finally internet , consider starlink , many different packages to consider , and it is a gamechanger in terms of connectabiliy, allowing you to work online almost anywhere in the world . wishing you both the best.

There's no right answer to this and everyone will have an opinion, but here goes. It was generally accepted practise from a certain time of boat building to electrically bond all the metal parts together. My 1978 hull has a combination of wires and braids like the one you found, linking the backstay, the steering quadrant, the bronze stern tube, the through hulls etc to the keel bolts. Modern thinking (according to an answer in a recent edition of PBO) is not to bond these items together. Indeed many modern boats have Tru Design composite through hulls anyway. You'll have to get advice from an expert, or Dr Google and make a decision if you are to re-instate the copper braiding in your boat. You will need a sacrificial anode where there are dissimilar metals like a stainless propshaft and a bronze propeller but whether this should be extended to a boat wide bonding system is open to debate. There's my two penneth, let the roasting begin. Good luck, great output, hope to see you along the way.

Banging Mara! Fantastic first couple of episodes! Great yacht and well done for cracking on and getting hands dirty! As a Kendal lad living aboard, I will say: Ash mate you need to tone down the accent a lal bit to capture the international audience and grow the channel. My wife is fine watching Eloise but can't understand a word from you and subtitles can't cope with you either lad. 😂. BTW she is used to my shocking northern accent and speaks fluent English for work, so just if you want a large international following... Something to think about 😅 Cracking episode tho and I have a feeling you're going to be my new favourite channel! And don't feel too bad she struggles with my sister's Cumbrian accent too 😅

God knows how I missed this comment. 😂😂😂 Mate it’s the bloody voice overs. I sound 10 times more Northen when it’s recorded for some reason. Eloise used to struggle when we first met with phone calls. And she still doesn’t have a clue what my dads saying 😂😂 Subtitles can’t cope either 😂😂 cracked me up that!! Cheers mate glad youse are enjoying them 😁 I’ll work on that accent so your Mrs can get more for the vids 🤣

Aeropress. Wouldn't handgrind, though. Just better to buy a decent grind, and get through it before it goes stale.

I’m enjoying your channel, you should have a think about having a buy me a coffee link. I quite often donate to channels that I like and find interesting. It could help you fund your adventures. Good luck for the future.

Guys, what is your plan for insurance? We are keen to do something similar... buy a motorboat (probably in FL/Carib already) and travel around that part of the world for a few years. We don't however have any experience. We can gain training and weekend experience over here, but I want to buy a boat/catamaran over there. I keep hearing from people that getting insurance without experience is impossible.... Help me out haha

We are currently insured with Haven Knox Johnston and they were really easy to get insurance through. So when we head off at least we will have one year under our belts and I guess we will just shop around then and see who is the best. I think there are companies that specialise in that area 😁

WiFi is everywhere in the med so easy to work online easy. As for you doing jobs in marinas, bars or anywhere, forget it! You are obviously both British, so after Brexshit you no longer can work in any EU (the Mediterranean) country without a work permit. You also won’t be able to sail in the Mediterranean for 2 years without doing the Schengan shuffle! Hate to break this news but you canon,y stay in Schengan for 90 days. Then you must leave for 90 days. Leaving the EU was bad for sailors. This also affects most of the Caribbean too
