Wikipedia Project info:
Wolverhampton Wanderers have made it known that they are planning to expand the capacity of Molineux to around 50,000. The clubs promotion to the Premier League has seen a big increase in demand for season tickets and this coupled with the ambitions of the Club's Chinese owners, means that they are looking to increase capacity.
The Club are planning to first replace the Steve Bull Stand on one side. The new stand will have extensive corporate facilities and once completed it will increase the capacity of Molineux from the current 31,700 to around 36,000. This may also result in away fans being moved from that side of the ground, to be housed instead in the upper tier of the Stan Cullis Stand. The second phase of the development would see the Jack Hayward (South Bank) Stand at one end, being replaced with a much larger single tiered stand of around 10,000. Corners of the stadium will also be filled.

If this actually happens it would be great. This is a continuation of the premier league team's stadium arms race. Teams need more resources to compete and Wolves want to be in the big leagues. I hope they can get it done.

I didn't realise Molineux has quite an open aspect around the stadium, compared to a lot of older stadiums that are surrounded by terraced houses. The new additions fit in with the original form of the stadium very nicely.
@tonysutton6559
@tonysutton6559 2 жыл бұрын
The terraced houses on the east side of the stadium were purchased by the club and knocked down in the 1970s to make way for the Steve Bull Stand which was built behind the old stand. There is a large ASDA and car park to the NE which was built as part of the rescue package (put together by the Gallagher brothers) when the club was bankrupt in the late 1980s. The gap between the Molineux Hotel and the South Bank is so large because the new stand is so much smaller than the old one which was one of the largest terraces in the UK. There is so much pedestrian space between the Billy Wright Stand and Waterloo Road to the west because the stadium got moved over by about 30 yards when it was redeveloped under Sir Jack Haywood as the club began its climb back to the top.

I remember going to Wolves matches in the late 70s. First match I went to was Wolves v Everton, Jan or Feb 1978 I think it was - Wolves won 3-1. The current stand now called the Steve Bull Stand I think, originally called the John Ireland Stand, was built across the road from the old stand. If you look at videos of Wolves matches from 1979-80 season onward, you will see a big gap to the pitch. The pitch I think was slightly shifted toward the new stand to make the gap a little less so, but it was still way too big. When the remaining old stands were knocked down in the 1990s and rebuilt, to more or less what it is now, the pitch was shifted even further toward the 79-80 stand. Hence, there is a lot of space around Molineux.

If it were up to me, I would start with the Steve Bull Stand which is a relic of 1970s design, too small and with very little leg room. A three tier stand designed to match the final plans for the Billy Wright Stand would increase the capacity to about 40,000 which would generate income for future development.

50,000. Current capacity is 32000 and last I heard the waiting list for season tickets was over 10,000 in 2019. Long term project to build up to this over next 5 years or so. Steve Bull stand is the main issue. If they can get that sorted out the club can really start to move forward. Still not sure this quite works. The space behind the Steve Bull is very tight with recent expansion of the University Business School, and the orientation of the ground abuts the Waterloo road at a tight angle. Fosun want a purpose multi sport and entertainment complex and conference centre that can generate money 365 days per year. Unfortunately we fans think it is just a matter of more bums on seats. This issue is why nothing has happened on the development front in 2 years. Fosun would like to move to another part of the city where a purpose built stadium can be designed and built with new supporting infrastructure. The Molineux site simply doesn't have the space and infrastructure to support 50K + capacity. This isn't the 1970s where toilet facilities on the old South Bank terrace was urinating into the pockets of the bloke standing next to you. We can't even close the Subway because of the memories of punch ups and knifings that are all part of the "history" of molineux. With a fan base that moronic it is just a matter of time before our inevitable return to the Championship and the departure of Fosun. Being unable to develop the ground has been a problem for over 70 years and destroyed the club in 1982. Fosun should demand agreement from the council to build a new Molineux near Blakenhall on the South East of the ring road. No shortage of land in need of development in Wolverhampton. Close to the Black country way and near Wanderers Avenue in Blakenhall where the club started in the 19th century. Going back home to where it all started and a new future in the 21st century. The current stadium including the Steve Bull or John Ireland as it was known remains a constant reminder of the collapse in the 1980s and the council allowing the University to extend the Business school means it is now more difficult for ground development and expansion. The ground that was the real molineux was demolished in the 1970s and 80s and that atmosphere has never really returned. The council insist that football must be played at Molineux. Unfortunately their nonsensical planning means it will remain a championship stadium and before too long a championship side will once again be playing there.

@@myroseaccount There are acres of space behind the Steve Bull Stand (btw it was originally the Molineux Street Stand) for redevelopment and the Sir Jack Haywood Stand could easily be extended to double the size because it is so much smaller than the old South Bank. Besides being seeped in history, Molineux is one of the stadiums that visiting fans enjoy because of its proximity to the city centre and being an easy walk from the station. It is so much better than a soulless generic stadium in the middle of nowhere or an overgrown tin shed in a run down industrial estate with a semi derelict council estate next door like one of our smaller neighbours.

These plans were an idea when Wolves Chinese owners were new and claiming Wolves would be the next Man City and challenging at the very top. They’ve since realised this costs a lot more than they’re willing to spend. They’ve stopped spending on player recruitment and allowed Adama to leave as they wouldn’t break their wage structure to offer him a better contract. I feel old because I remember the current stadiums opening game. It must be only about 30 years ago. I've never visited it, but it says a lot about the quality of the design in the fact it's already needing to be torn down and replaced. I'm always an advocate of having a large single tiered home end and stands close to the pitch. Spurs is a really good design. Emirates doesn't generate any atmosphere. I really don't like the mini old traffords like Leicester either.

The only reason* that it is being upgraded is that it is too small and there is a waiting list of about 10,000 for season tickets. The Billy Wright stand was built with expansion in mind with the structure being designed to have a third tier added in the future if needed. *Other than the Steve Bull Stand which was built in the late 1970s.

Why do the away fans sit where they do? Anytime you watch a Wolves game or even play them in FIFA, the away fans are right in front of the main camera view. No other team that I notice is like this and it’s quite weird. You would think at a home match, you want only your fans in the main camera view

That stadium does not fit in the space available. These are simulations and not plans and you could show the Camp Nou in the space between the Wolves business school and the Waterloo Road if you wanted. The Billy Wright stand abuts at a tight angle into the Waterloo road. Suddenly a new 2 tier wing stand appears in exactly the same footprint. This does not work. Also where did the Wolves Business school disappear to when showing the sequence where the Steve Bull stand is replaced? Again the space is very tight to fit in a new larger 2 tier wing stand. The council have screwed the club AGAIN as they have done many times down the decades. They have insisted football is played at Molineux whilst allowing developments that have narrowed and reduced the space available for a serious redevelopment. Fosun have been talking to the Council and the University about finding a solution to this complete and utter nonsensical set of planning decisions for over 3 years and is the reason we're hearing nothing substantive on stadium development. I also think the obvious issues with the Molineux site maybe one of the reasons Fosun are struggling to find partners to support stadium development. It is essential they get going with investment in a new ground. Players come and go, and if the foundations are not in place the team will once again be a championship team playing in a championship stadium. I blame the council and the old ruling cabal of local landowners. WTF did they allow a massive multi million pound extension of the business school pointing straight out towards the Steve Bull stand. Whoever reviews and approves major building works and investment in the council are fucking morons. As if there is a shortage of land in need of development in Wolverhampton they have to pack everything in and around the football stadium. Cretinous morons do not typically deserve to have a brilliant world class football team in their city. At the moment Fosun and what they have done with Wolves appears to be an aberration that will be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
