I know its a fact that after the war ended and when the british and americans came across abandoned Dora's we were quite impressed. Once we rigged them up to run on our high octane fuel they actually out performed every single seater we had. I know theres a d-13 in the US still in original shape. Not sure if it was one of the ones rigged up and tested but its def a fact, i know the d 13 had hydrolic ailerons, mustangs didnt even have that, and also the electric switch the germans had that negated the drawback of having guns behind the propeller was interesting to us to. Im pretty sure the k-4s also performed amazing. And i also think the doras were better engineered than mustangs. Allied pilots at first thought they had made somesort of small radial engine. It didnt need that underhanging scoop the mustang had that gave them some more drag, the Dora hit the parts cleverly. I personally like the d-9 and d-13's the best. Give a d-9 the hydrolic ailerons the d-13s had and even without the high octane fuel that would of reeked havoc, it would of given them rollrates better then antons. The d-13s were starting to acquire the stuff that ended up into the TA's like pressurized cockpits, the the engine that could go solid to 9k as opposed to the d-9s that could only go solid to really 6k. The d-13 was like a TA with a dora frame and better gun placement. The TA was a strict high altitude fighter, and it wasnt as good with bouncing targets as d-9s and d-13s were. American bombers and fighters werent breaking 30 thousand feet. The Ta's performed best at 9k alt wich is 30 thousand feet, but fights didnt stay there, once they went anywhere else the TAs lacked.

@@princesofthepower3690 The first Ta-152 prototypes were constructed from Fw-190D airframes. Although they share the same shape and basic layout, the production Ta-152 is a new aircraft and you could not build a Ta-152 from a Dora without difficulty. The late-war D-15 with a grafted Ta-152 tail was the last evolution of the Fw-190A series with rapid conversion into the long-nose variant with a DB-603 engine package and Ta-152 tails that could be sourced. Those shared more with the Ta-152C prototypes.

@groovy67 The fan was geared a 3x propeller speed on wartime Fw190s with BMW 801s. Today, on the replica Fw190s equipped with the ASh-82 engine the fan being used is fixed and spins at propeller speed. The fan blade angles are ground-adjustable for various conditions. One replica has been re-engined with an R-2800 and I do not know if a cooling fan is being used at all, and it is the one having oil cooling issues.

boy I keep wondering what kind of vehicles Messerschmitt, Focke-Wulf, Dormier, Junker and all those aviation companies would produce today. They'd probably toy with F22s. Just look at their engine producer who managed to survive: BMW & Benz, outclassing everyone since the 50s with ease.

+abmo32 Post-WW2 Donier relocated to outside of Germany and provided aeronautical services. They returned to Germany in the 1950s to produce aircraft. They have been in a series of partnerships, including Mercedes and today are part of Fairchild Aircraft. Messerschmitt, Junkers, and Focke Wulf did not disappear but through a series of mergers after WW2 they are now all consolidated and licensed under EADS Aerospace, now Airbus.

@ralphbernhard1757
@ralphbernhard1757 8 жыл бұрын
Schwanzel Stock From what I've read, the DB engine was larger and heavier. Because the Fw 190 was a variant of the standard production model A, all that was needed to make an effective aircraft was to place a short additional section before the tail, in order to balance the airframe. In order to use the heavier DB 603, an entirely new air frame had to be developed (Ta 152), to be better balanced. The Fw 190 D was therefore probably more of a stop gap, to get it into production fast using existing parts of regular 190s already in mass production since 1941.
@LivingInTheLimeligh7
@LivingInTheLimeligh7 8 жыл бұрын
The Jumo-213 was simply easier to acquire, the DB-603 was not very available. Tank obviously would have liked to put a DB-603 on all of the inline fighters he built, as it had larger displacement and better performance figures. Tank even requested it for his Ta-152 Höhenjäger, but it was refused and he had to work with the Jumo-213 E. The Jumo engine did the job, but he saw that the DB-603 could be developed into a much better high-altitude engine. In the end, the (Ta-152 C) Zerstörer, or destroyer variant of the Ta-152 got the DB-603 engine. This aircraft was designed for good performance at medium altitudes, while also carrying 125 kg of armor, four 20mm cannons and one centrally-mounted 30mm cannon and ammo for all of them, aswell as a 500kg bomb if i recall correctly.

It depends on what is meant by protecting the JV44 Me262s. They were given orders to drive fighters away and not chase off for kills. Going up in only 2s and staying below 500 feet allowed them to protect the slow glide in and slow acceleration from takeoff.

+Mike Johnson At the point when the USAAF entered the ETO, the Luftwaffe was a shadow of it's former self. They still had the occasional ace, but a lot of the pilots were just rookies. Saying that the equipment of the Germans was at fault is naive. The Longnosed Fw-190D was similar in speed to the Mustang, but was far more maneuverable and had stronger armament. (two 13mm MG and two 20mm cannons) The Bf-109 was a notoriously difficult aircraft to master among the Luftwaffe pilots, and while this, and the aging basic design were showing in combat, the Bf-109 was still in it's later marks a very maneuverable and dangerous adversary when pilots were of equal skill. It also had a strong armament. (20mm or 30mm cannon and two 13mm MG).
@mikejohnson7202
@mikejohnson7202 8 жыл бұрын
LivingInTheLimeligh7 At the point when the USAAF entered the ETO, the Luftwaffe had a majority of their aces in the Reichsverteidigung or Home Defense, mainly over Berlin and other major German cities. It was then that the Luftwaffe was losing an average of 300 fighters a week and during the first week of march 44 the Luftwaffe lost 28 aces to American fighter pilots. Given the historical data the Luftwaffe was only superior to early antiquated allied aircraft designs like Russia's Post WW1 designs and inexperienced pilots galore. Match the Luftwaffe against any allied planes and pilots two years into the war and German pilots and aircraft were mediocre at best. Consider the fact Germany had been modernizing the Luftwaffe since the early thirties and it took the U.S.A only three years and three months to take over German skies when totally unprepared for war in 41.
