Gotta love evo motors. Very owner friendly when it's time to work on them. Very straight forward, and you can work on them with common tools. Oh, and the numbers for the cam will be on the other end of the shaft. You'll need to pull it out to see.

That's awesome that you're doing this yourself. I got my first bike a few years ago and have been learning to do the maintenance and make some upgrades (like electronic ignitions). I haven't pulled an engine and taken it apart yet.

84 engine is a case breather, you have a head breather cam cover. And no Sir, the inside of the cam is not bronze color.

When your allens start to get soft and shewed up around the ends, just take it to a grinder and smooth it back down super flat.

Gotta find myself one of those points covers... the camchest looks familiar to me, just 2 weeks ago I changed out the plastic breather gear on my 83 FXDG for a metal one. The cam chest looks exactly the same (my engine is still a shovelhead). My original plastic breather gear had teeth sheered off and was not turning. So the motor constantly dripped from the breather vent. There was no damage to the motor. I took the pudhrods out to take the pressure of the cam, before opening the cam chest.
