Space Shuttle Training Aircraft flights for STS-132 Atlantis, STS-133 Discovery and STS-134 Endeavour. The STA is a Grumman American Aviation-built Gulfstream II jet modified to simulate a shuttle's cockpit, motion and handling qualities. The test provides astronauts and ground crews with an opportunity to participate in various simulated countdown activities, including equipment familiarization and emergency training.

Awesome to see this video. Had a really good friend who was a NASA pilot and was one of the few in the world who was single pilot certified in the G-II since the right seat was a G-II flight desk while the left seat was configured as the Shuttle. Got a tour of one of the STA and it was amazing to hear of what they'd do. Thanks "TRIPPLE" for the great stories and thanks AIRBOYD for sharing this video.

Is that a Gulfstream? Interesting that NASA would spend so much time in an actual plane practicing Shuttle landings. I would have thought that most of this training would be in a simulator. I guess they felt hands on practice with a airplane would give them some benefit. I have been told that flying the shuttle in for landing was like flying a brick that handled really well.

true, but given that there is no go-around, perhaps it is wise to do it in for real. It is a tiny budget in the overall scheme of things for space shuttle programme

Yep. They used to bring two of these G2s out to Edwards AFB to practice. It was especially cool to see at night. NASA would put out light carts at both EOR and light up the whole 15000 foot runway. All for good reasons. The Orbiter landed 3 times in my 4 year stay there.

@@MrBen527 Hmmm..Very cool info. Didn't know any of that. I swear the sheer magnitude of the Shuttle program at its peak must have been amazing to be a part of.

They even simulate the height difference between the gulfstream and the shuttle when "touching down"?
@ImpendingJoker
@ImpendingJoker 4 жыл бұрын
Partly yes, partly no. The main reason they don't touch down is because at the speeds and descent rate they are flying it would destroy the landing gear of the G-II.

Ok so what we are going to do is when you start your approach we are go to throw the thrust reverse on. Then on final we are going to drop the rear gear to slow are decent. Are ya good with falling out of the sky?
@SuperDaveTX1
@SuperDaveTX1 Жыл бұрын
Uh.. thrust reverse and main gear down ( not front ) was done at start of simulation... and sim start was way before final. You can see gear down ( not front ) during sim @ 1:38 this was sim configuration. They call out gear down as part of the final as that is when the actual shuttle does put down its gear. So, that is simulated. back gear down is required for the drag, to put the CG in front of the plane and have it fly like the shuttle. just fyi... ;-)

@Dave G yes I think we all got that. The shuttle Flys like a 104 star fighter with no thrust. Or a first pitch being thrown by Joe Biden.
