A Gömböc is a convex three-dimensional homogeneous body which, when resting on a flat surface, has just one stable and one unstable point of equilibrium. The Gömböc shape is not unique; it has countless varieties, most of which are very close to a sphere and all have very strict shape tolerance (less than 0.1 mm per 10 cm).

I'm not sure this person understands the point of these object, or he's really bad at video editing. He didn't show them doing what they're designed to do!!!

They always right themselves on a horizontal surface, the same way. Actually, he showed that “material” influences how quickly the equilibrium point will be reached. The lighter, plexiglass gomboc rights itself faster than the metal one. Remember, there are no weights inside the gomboc; homogeneity of the material is what makes the shape so interesting

@@almanac520 my point is this doesn’t demonstrate the phenomenon of a gomboc shape! They could have achieved this with many homogeneous geometrically biased shapes e.g. a pear cross section. I’m probably being a tad pernickety but this doesn’t demonstrate the point of a gomboc shape, as you know it’s a very specific concept. Look at any other KZfaq video

If somebody wanted to do something to trick us, they would use this setup with the blurred images and black background. But at 0.07 the one on the left suddenly turns and hits the other one and they sync. I've seen the way things synchronize so I know it's possible.

A gomboc doesn't do nothing. It's discovery is very important, and it has a number of useful applications. It is the first and only known shape discovered to have one stable equilibrium point, and one unstable equilibrium point. Because it is a self righting shape, it has some use in engineering fields. One example would be the construction of self-righting ships which are immune to capsizing.

To all of these people in the comments who are wondering what the point is: There isn't one. At least, not a point of rest. You see, no matter what orientation you set this shape down in, it will always roll to the same position no matter what. Also, it has no stable "balanced" position.

No matter how you place it on a flat surface, it will come to the same resting point on the bottom. The requirement is that the object is made of one material.
