Online Japanese Carpentry Course through Real Construction⇒www.kickstarter.com/projects/1911438091/online-japanese-carpentry-course-through-real-construction We are building a Japanese carpentry school in France. We will document this entire process with drawings, photos and videos, and make it an online course so that everyone can learn about Japanese carpentry in English through this real construction project. We will use traditional Japanese techniques and construction methods, and use local materials such as wood, stone, and soil to build the most sustainable buildings possible. We hope you enjoy our carpentry learning materials. Let’s enjoy woodworking together!

To everyone saying "Just use a lathe, duh" - this technique was originally used to make the massive round pillars that held up entire Japanese buildings and temples. Good luck finding a lathe large enough for a column over 60 feet long and 5 feet wide...

If pillars were "massive" - then probably they made it from whole tree trunks, not squared beams. Shown technique not applicable to whole tree trunk.

The craft is a perfect art. I've learned a lot. I dont think it's possible without a lathe. The planer is so sharp that it slice like a ham cutter. And the marking string and the wood pen. An art needed to preserve. Respect sir

For those who wonder why a lathe isn't used in the video, just read the blurb. The purpose of this video is to show the technique. Whether or not a lathe is used in the actual work (I bet they have to, for large constructions) is beside the point.

Nowadays one can turn telephone poles on a lathe that is large enough, but in ancient Japan architectural carpenters (known as "daiku" in Japanese) would have done it as shown in the video.

It's really amaze me when ever I saw a really talented person in his work u won't believe how many worker in my country don't even knew the worth of thier own hand made pieces for example the maintenance worker of Taj Mahal is the descended of the same family who work there at the time of construction of it and they still use the same methods till now by hand still giving shape of to the stone by hand tools with the accuracy I guess what is good in this is the preservation of both the art and and the artist but I m pretty sure the govt wouldn't even care to recognize their work and pay them respectively

90% of this is hidden in the radiused plane blades (kanna). They show 10 seconds of the plane being sharpened to the diameter of the wood when in reality its the most critical part of the process.
