And it was recorded in 1971. Pete Townshend is on record with this statement about where it all really began:: I used to see Richie Blackmore carrying his guitar up and down my street when I was 14 or 15. Some jazz pianist down the road used to say to me, "You've got a guitar, there's a really great boy who comes and plays with me sometimes called Richie Blackmore.” He invented heavy metal. I didn't. He was doing it years before any of us and probably invented power chords as well. So I dunno why he's such a sullen, dark, evil mother****er (grins)."

Great seeing all three of these legendary shredders on one stage. I have to say though, outside of the original, Satriani with Sammy Hagar's The Circle absolutely slayed this tune live! Search it. You won't be disappointed!

The legendary Uli Jon Roth as always playing his part without trying to steal the show, he's a great guitar player and a humble person, Joe SAtriani and John Petrucci are also great guitar players, with all my respect to those players, the best cover version of highway star belongs to Metal Church, their cover version is on their debut album, thanks and cheers!

All of them were super best in guitarist around the world..John Petrucci (Dream Theater) is greatest guitarist with melodic vibes and can play every genre music..His guitar solo on THE SPIRIT CARRIES ON IS ONE OF THE BEST AWESOME SOLO HAVING SOME DEEPLY COMFORT RIFFS VIBES

The best of this version are the vocals of Steve - hats off! Big balls to sing such special parts of Ian Gillan. The guitar parts are played quite well, but nobody is able to cover Ritchie within purple stuff.

So Satch still looks like the alien. Petrucci looks like a beer-bellied biker who rides a FatBob, and Roth continues to look the way he has for decades. Bravo to all the progmetal guys for acknowledging where it all really started…. and sadness that they couldn’t manage to do a better job. Think I’ll go put on Made In Japan, and hear it as it was intended.

It seems like they haven't practiced it and haven't thought up a very good 'concept' for covering this song. A modern metal guitar tone like Petrucci's just doesn't fit that solo imo.
