In this video we explore GA4 conversion tracking vs. Universal Analytics (UA) conversion tracking.
Setting up conversions is different in GA4 than in UA. No longer are there the 4 types of UA "goals" (Destination goals, pages / session goals, session duration goals, and Event goals), but instead, everything in GA4 is an event. We'll review the process of creating some of these events in GA4, and then how we can select some of these events to be counted as conversions.
Have questions or comments? Leave them in the comments. I'm always up for learning more...and for new video ideas.
There's typically a new video every week or two about GA4 or Google Tag Manager or Looker Studio or sometimes Google Ads or SEO. If you want to follow along with what I'm learning (trying to learn) you can subscribe at the link below:

Hi again, Jason. Yes, you've nailed it there. It does seem bulky and unwieldy relative to UA. I have two other things to share that *might* be useful for your situation: 1.) This is a 10 step setup guide for GA4. This was helpful for me to work through because it finally felt like I was able to start from a clean foundation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r6piobCjp7uyaGQ.html 2.) This is a video guide to setting up custom events without Google Tag Manager. I typically use GTM myself, but for some events this is a far easier and simpler solution: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idx2oKhq3sXch4E.html Good luck and Godspeed to you! Zack

Hey , thanks for the guidance . How do i setup a conversion that triggers the checkout page when a user came on the website organically .
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Brittney, I would set up a conversion for all visits to the checkout page and then apply a segment (or just view your reports to see who is coming from organic search). Would that work for you? If so, there are two ways you could set up the checkout page conversion. Option 1 would be to use Google Tag Manager. Here's a video showing that process for a thank you page conversion: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8lpdaty0tTWfX0.html Option 2 would be to create a custom event in GA4 without using Google Tag Manager. This video shows how to do that. It's not specifically for a thank you / checkout page, but the same principle should work. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idx2oKhq3sXch4E.html Let me know if this helps. It is possible to create a conversion only for organic search traffic, but that would involve something called an audience trigger event which would even a little more complexity to this. Yikes, right? Good luck and Godspeed to you! Zack

Hi. I have a question. I have created conversion goals in UA without GTM. When I exported these goals to GA4 it shows under Conversions instead of events. What should I do in GA4 to more goals from Conversions to Events? These conversions are clicks on phone number, form submission, etc.
@rooted-digital

Hello there. Based on my understanding of the GA4 goals migration tool, GA *should* create a new event and then mark that newly created event as a conversion. If you read this Google support article (support.google.com/analytics/answer/10762548?hl=en#zippy=%2Cin-this-article) under "How the Tool Works", that is what you'll see. In other words, it seems like you should see your conversions both in Conversion reporting and in Event reporting. But it sounds like this is not happening in your case. So I don't have a specific recommendation here. I can say that I have consistently heard about limitations with the GA4 goals migration, so oftentimes it is helpful to start and create them from scratch. Best of luck and I'm sorry I can't offer more help.

Hey hey! In UA we could set up a destination goal with *multiple conditions* that would track the number of views on /sneakers/ pages and /tops/ pages with Goals > Destination > regex > /sneakers/|/tops/ Does this work with GA4 as well, and would this be the proper way to indicate it? Custom Event name: sneakers_tops_view Parameter 1: event_name > equals > page_view Parameter 2: page_location > contains > /sneakers/|/tops/
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Nick! As you certainly realize, this is one of those places where things were a good bit easier to do in UA than in GA4. I miss those easy breezy destination goals from UA as well! If I am understanding correctly, the answer to your question is "YES", you can create a pageview conversion in GA4 that will be recorded when a visitor lands on either one of /sneakers pages or one of the /tops pages. From within Google Tag Manager (GTM), you would create a trigger and make when you set the trigger conditions you can choose "matches RegEx" for your page path and enter your expression. In terms of naming your event parameters for the GA4 tag you'd create in GTM and link to your trigger, a lot of that comes down to your overall measurement and naming plan. If you haven't done it yet, I'd recommend mapping out all of the events you will want to track and come up with names for the event parameters you'll want to use. This can be a pretty big undertaking depending on what you'll want to measure. If it's too much for now, you can always create the event and then go back and add your parameters later. That would at least prevent a situation where you start on an ad hoc basis and then your parameter data gets kind of jumbled and hard to interpret. Hope this helps at least a little. Here are some further notes / resources that might be useful for your situation: - If you were familiar with events in UA, this comparison to events in UA vs. GA4 might be helpful in orienting yourself more to GA4. - After you create your GA4 event in GTM, you'll need to mark it as a conversion in GA4 if you want it to show as a Conversion and not just as an Event. - To see your event parameter info in GA4, you will need to register event parameters as custom dimensions in GA4. This was new and surprising to me and confused me a lot. Here's an explainer video I made if you're interested: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fcmekqxe3a7Spok.html - You may not need this, but if you want a primer on how Tags and Triggers work together in Google Tag Manager, well, here you go: www.rootandbranchgroup.com/google-tag-manager-basics/ Best of luck to you. Hello :) I have a question. I used to measure our Google Ads / Paid search new order conversions with UA goal completions but now I need to implement it into GA4. Should I just create a new GA4 event for our thank you page? Is there any way I can filter paid searches from organic/other types in this event? But also I need to know how many % of the total paid searches completed the order to get the exact ROI.
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, yes you can create a GA4 event and will be able to see how many came from Paid Search vs. Organic vs. other sources. You have a couple options for creating the event. You can do it with the help of Google Tag Manager or you can use the built in event creation functionality in GA4. Some videos for both: - Thank you page conversion tracking with GTM and GA4: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8lpdaty0tTWfX0.html - How to create a GA4 custom event without GTM: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idx2oKhq3sXch4E.html One thing to note is that the event will fire every time the triggering action takes place. In other words, if you use a thank you page, the event will register multiple times if a user reloads the thank you page or something like that. That is probably a small percentage and might just be something you're willing to accept. If not, you could use something called an "Audience Trigger Event" to make sure it only fires once per user. I just published a video about audiences (here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsh2iLCUlcreZmg.html) and next week will publish another showing more detail on these Audience Triggers. Hope this helps with everything. Best wishes! Zack

Great tutorial! What's the difference between the trigger "Page Path" and "Page URL" - URL seems more logical to use to me...
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hey there, Marco. Good question. Page Path and Page URL are quite similar. The Page URL will show the full URL while the Page Path will show only the portion of the URL following the root domain. Page Path will also not show query parameters in the URL. For example, let's take this page about setting up GA4 page timer tracking: www.rootandbranchgroup.com/ga4-page-timer-tracking/ Page Path = /ga4-page-timer-tracking/ Page URL = www.rootandbranchgroup.com/ga4-page-timer-tracking/ Hope that helps. Hi Christie, glad this was helpful. You're quite welcome. I'm curious, are you seeing your goals in GA4 now? I normally give it 24 hours to be on the safe side, but it's often sooner. Also, if you use Preview and Debug mode in GTM and the tag is firing there, you can feel confident that it will show up in GA4. A new video published this morning about advanced scroll tracking in GA4 with GTM (to get more useful data than GA4 will give you by default), and this video includes the process of testing with GTM Preview and Debug mode. Here's a link in case that could be a useful reference. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o5eaicWZnJ--noE.html Thanks, Zack

@@rooted-digital they are showing now but without data. When I did the preview my visit to the page showed. And the data does show 1 conversion which I assume was my test click because I can see my actual opt ins on convertkit and it was 39. I’m planning to check again later this afternoon to see what happens after the 24 hour mark.

Why do you want the parameter trigger to fire on some page views instead of all?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital 2 жыл бұрын
In this case, the tag and trigger "fires" when the visitor lands on a /thank-you page. So the event parameter data with additional information is only created in that specific situation (when a visitor fills out a contact form and gets redirected to that /thank-you page). If the trigger was set to fire on all page views, it would literally be creating events for *all* pageviews on the Root and Branch site. While that might be something we want to track (would be interesting to know the total number of pages viewed on the site), it would not be helpful in terms of understanding how many times a contact form was submitted (which is the thing we want to track here). Thanks for the question. Hope that answer helps! (Let me know if not) Zack
