In this video we are sharing some of our barbed wire fencing mistakes and also showing you how we are building our gabion basket fence posts as the brace for our fence.
We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
(UPDATE 7/21/2023: Get our FREE EBook "9 Steps To Getting Off The Grid" at www.TwoRebelsOffGrid.com Having been off grid for a year now, we think these 9 steps are CRITICAL before you start your off grid journey!)
It feels like this fence is taking us FOREVER!!! And, along the way we made some barbed wire fencing mistakes that we hope you can learn from :) With the very intense monsoon season, we have had a lot of rain and lightning delays, so we are taking a bit longer than we expected! BUT, once the fence is done, it’s DONE!
Our three (3) main reasons for the fence are:
To fence OUT livestock because Arizona is a “fence out” state meaning livestock can wander around and graze on your land and it’s up to the property owner to protect their land from this.
To fence IN the livestock that we will have some day soon.
To create a barrier to people accidentally or purposefully wandering onto our property. An example of this would be a hunter who is crossing our land to get to public lands to legally hunt.
As most of you know we have a TON of rocks on our property which is actually AWESOME because they are a 100% FREE RESOURCE…woohoo!!! So, some areas of the fence we were unable to drive the T post in very far, so we are making gabion baskets around the saggy T posts to fortify the fence and we think they look pretty cool too!
For the gabion baskets, we used these things and here are the prices at the time of this video:
*Concrete mesh from Home Depot…$309 for 5 foot high and 150 foot roll: www.homedepot.com/p/5-ft-x-15...
*14 gauge wire to connect the 2 sides of the basket together…$7.93 for a 100 foot roll:
www.homedepot.com/p/OOK-100-f...
*ROCKS…luckily free for us :)
DISCLAIMER: Douglas and Keri are not contractors and the information contained in this video is for entertainment purposes. Please make sure to do your own research!
Once again, thanks for following along with us and we hope to inspire you to live your best life, whatever that might mean for you!

Solar panels, batteries, and controllers oh my! The 3 main things you need...a fence...water...and power...so it has to be the power because you already have the other 2! 😜🤣 Love the gabions...was thinking I would love to do a gabion style short fence around our RV area to help block the winds especially at night in the winter. We just put up some mesh and wire fencing for now to keep the cattle from collapsing the trench I'm trying to dig and I put some solar mason jar lanterns hanging from the t-posts and it looks pretty cool at night! Now we need a gate...🔨👷‍♀️

Yep, we need all those things! Glad you like the gabions...they are super solid, so would probably work really well as a wind block for your RV, especially if you've got a lot of rocks laying around :) Never heard of solar mason jar lanterns...was that something you made? We are gonna need a gate soon too!

Firstly, I love this channel. ❤ Secondly, the Galion posts will last until your grandchildren have kids, at least. Highly approved! Thirdly, my bet is on a tractor. I can't think of a more useful thing to have after the fences. Food, shelter, water, security... a good tractor will help make all of those things happen more efficiently.

Been following on and off, I am weary excited for you two, and love you’re ideas!! Ok I’m a fencing contractor..LoL.. so yes I wish I could help you guys.. If you are still fencing, I use string to keep the The post straight as possible, Leave the tops random if you cannot get them all the way down, every 10 poster should have a diagonal post to the ground to support an anchor, can you get a come along and pull that top wire with a come along, and then use a measuring tape measure to set the top wire to make it roll with the hillside..then you can measure and find the lower barb wire location.. You both are doing a great job, I admire your perseverance…🕺

Thank you! We are thinking you meant "very" not "weary" LOL, but we do get weary sometimes!! haha Oh wow, good to know and those are very good tips! We actually did buy a chain fence stretcher and that is working much better than our "pull tight with the nail pull end of a hammer" method we were using! Thank you so much for following along and all this great info! Take care!

Thank you so much! Oh, we totally get scratched up! LOL We love how they turned out too and they were so inexpensive to make...we figured we have all these rocks, we might as well put them to work! Oh yeah, Doug was ranting, wasn't he?!! Oh my gosh, could it PLEASE be a swimming pool?!!! That would be so amazing! I would actually be very happy with a swimming hole or a what some people call a swimming pond :) Our dog Willow found a natural little swimming hole yesterday that we are going to share...not quite bit enough for us humans, but great for dogs! Only one injury so far where I (Keri) accidentally dropped a rock on my hand that was on another rock...got a wicked big blood blister on my middle finger, but luckily nothing broken. Take care and appreciate your support!!! :)

Cairns--i think "kay-rns"--it's a pleasure to hear someone actually use that word, a first for me! That, or gabions--excellent, so handsome, strong and useful. I can't believe you have all that great rock just lyin around. I had to go back a ways to find a video I hadn't seen from you: I love and agree with the rants, Doug! Except there is NO down side to the you-know-what on the southern border--that's totally a one-party socialist lock-step-poverty-for-all system down there. My town in southern CA is vast majority escapees from there. Great fence!

Thank you so much! We found some info on the original technique and it goes back 7000 years to Egyptian times when they used them for flood control of the Nile river! They wove reed baskets to contain the rocks. They've also been used extensively by the military and Leonardo da Vinci designed one called a "Corbeille Leonard" that was used in construction of the San Marco Castle in Milan. Pretty interesting history!

In Texas marking your posts with purple paint gives notice of being posted/no trespassing. Is it the same in Arizona? If so, you could dip the tops of future t-posts in a can of purple paint and call it a day 😊 no need for the posted signs

Question: why did you come in 20' from the property line? It has been my experience that once a fence goes up it is assumed that the fence is the property boundary. Therefore the adjacent land owner assumes that part of the property is theirs. I have land in NW AZ in Coconino County and am currently working on it. I think you bought a tractor. Or a big water tank. Both are much needed.
@tworebelsoffgrid
@tworebelsoffgrid Жыл бұрын
That's a good question...20' in was only in a small section of that fence line because we were working around a wash...where the property line is, the wash was super deep, so we pulled it in (was probably closer to 10 feet) to go through the more shallow area of the wash. The rest of the fence is on the property line. Coconino county is beautiful! Are you building a homestead? Both of your guesses are excellent!

Was there a survey when you purchased the land? So it was complete with permanent corner markers ect.? A fence line over the years supposedly can become a property line.?? Your recent big purchase is a big bad 🐕 to protect your stock and property from predators.? No? I worry most about 2 legged varmints rather than 4 as invaders / trespassing. Also I've seen a low wall made like the rock post your doing but they used goat / hog panels ( stronger / shorter than your wire ) and it was 24" / 30" tall in sections 14 ' / 16' in a yard that was on uneven land. Its also 18"/20" thick ? Really looks great and can act as a dividing fence / retaining wall.
@tworebelsoffgrid
@tworebelsoffgrid Жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes, in fact, we were actually able to locate all the property pins. Yes, a property fence can become the property line eventually. We actually didn’t stray that far from the property line. We just came in a little bit to accommodate over a wash that was difficult to cross. A big dog sounds intriguing :-) you’ll have to stay tuned to see what we bought! We worry about the two legged varmints also Lol! we are tucked so far back off any main roads that we would be shocked to see anybody crossing our property that wasn’t one of our neighbors. We would know right away that they were probably there to do something bad! Fencing, uneven land, was definitely challenging!! Appreciate you following our journey :)
