Great video very much looking forward to part 2. I've had a quick look at the part costs the ultra caps are the most expensive you mentioned you may use 6 or even 8 of these so the total cost is about 1500 euro's so not too bad for a high end streamer / DAC. It will be interesting to hear how this performs.....

Thank you so much for this Gabby! I was inspired to build a streamer based on your previous video and I am nearing completion of that project now. As I am coming to the end, I already started thinking: I wonder if I can build a dac next! One area I struggled with on my streamer is grounding. I watched your video a few times and also read the diy audio forums but I could not really understand the issue (I am a total beginner on electronics). In the end, my streamer works fine with no hum, but I don’t know if I have really addressed grounding properly. If you mention a bit more about that in your upcoming videos I would be delighted to understand it better! Thanks again for your contributions to diy audio I am really enjoying this new hobby thanks to your generosity with your time and experience.

Thanks Philip I struggled a lot with Ground as well I talk about it on my streamer build at 18min:30s basically you have 1)The Chassis (the Case) connect that to the Mains ground (electrical socket ground) 2)The battery ground can be 1) not connected to anything 2) connected to the Chassis 3) use a x2 capacitor and resistor what I did see my streamer video at 18min:30s but you can try and see if you hear differences. One important thing Ian's LifePo4 stand offs are connected to ground making the switching power supply grounded as well ( hate those switching power supplies)I used Plastic Stand offs as the battery power was showing added Noise on my Oscilloscope. 3) signal ground ( the negative of say a rca input it output cable or I2s cable not applicable much in this setup but I noticed the hdmi shield is connected to the battery ground by default on Ian’s board but left it as is. Use the same point on the chassis to connect things to it Hope that helps

Thank for sharing all the details.Would it be possible for a cheaper start into a DIY project to share one single UCPure 3.3V to power the FiFoPi (1x3.3v) and the DAC (3x3.3V). Same for the 5V UCPure for Rasp and STDIV Transformers. Many thanks for your hint.

Thank you so much for such GREAT content! Truly rare on KZfaq for audiophiles,. I wonder if this couldn't be adapted for an external DAC that was not originally designed for a Raspberry Pi. This great! thanks...really like the comments on decisions and alternatives. Have you considered DSP...any idea how you would implement say 2 stereo channels and 2 subwoofer for instance? any comments like that would be most appreciated
@Gabster1
@Gabster1 2 жыл бұрын
I would try to keep the Dac as pure as possible so no DSP no Subwoofer these can be implemented in a preamplifier or amplifier build with a bypass switch. In Genreal I am not a fan of DSP as I find it introduce circuits that are not HIFI unless you are using very expensive DSP's best spend more time setting up the speakers better and do some room treatments. hope I understood your question.

@@Gabster1 Thanks...I'm interested in exploring manipulating the data stream in the digital domain (software based EQ/DSP/tone control or whatever you want to call it) before analog conversion. So in my example this would imply doubling the dacs (having two dac boards)....not sure how to set that up
@schrodingerscat1863
@schrodingerscat1863 Жыл бұрын
@@Gabster1 If you are going to implement a DSP best to interface where the sound is still in the digital domain. If you put something like that into a preamp or amp you are then having to sample and the output of your high end DAC and convert back into analogue meaning all the money and time spent build this DAC is kind of wasted. So many system builders seem to make this fundamental mistake.

Hi Aiello not sure what you mean by the Isolator II I only see the linear pi and ucmate conditioner on the left but if you check the Part 3 video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oK-mddybysrIdX0.html between 3:30 and 6 you see the stack in detail I ended up using the regular station Pi not the pro as I did not need any of the pro features also will be using Ian's new Fifo Q7 more videos on this build sill to come.

That is the daughter board of the StationPi pro it comes with the StationPi pro. Just to confirm I contacted Ian and the daughter board does not provide additional isolation. It is good to use it for Better integrate with USB and Amanero. if you do not need that no need to install it also if you do not need all the extra connection and a touch screen like me the Old StationPi is as good.

How are ultra capacitors better than batteries, surely, for an application like this they provide essentially the same thing a clean DC voltage and current. Just wondering why you would choose ultra capacitors which hold comparatively small amounts of energy compared to say a Li-ion battery of equivalent size and the cost difference is huge. What am I missing with this?
@Gabster1
@Gabster1 Жыл бұрын
The internal resistance of supercapacitors is typically an order of magnitude lower than batteries,
@schrodingerscat1863
@schrodingerscat1863 Жыл бұрын
@@Gabster1 But that makes no difference what so ever if you are just powering the digital electronics from it. Batteries with linear regulators will provide rock solid voltage and current and if you are worried about variable loads causing issues then a couple of ordinality electrolytic capacitors on the output stage of the power supply will be more than enough to decouple the PSU electronics. Remember its only the output from the DAC that needs the super stable power supply too so the raspberry pi and anything else in the digital domain will be fine even with switching noise. As long as there is some opto isolation between that and the DAC circuitry and it is all well shielded and the DAC reference voltage is very stable the audio output will be rock solid. As far as getting digital audio to the DAC you don't need to worry about jitter unless it is so bad it is causing errors in the audio output which is doubtful. I think a lot of the additional circuitry you have between the PI and the DAC is really not required. The SPI signal from the PI will likely be easily stable enough not to cause any errors due to jitter, its not like you are sending it over several metres of cable. All that said the setup you have there should work flawlessly, power supplies will be ultra stable and you have shielded everything well but it is overkill in many areas.

@@schrodingerscat1863 right? Especially seeing as several lithium batteries on the market have a 60c discharge rating so there will be 0 voltage from that the DAC will see the only real difference being that to the batteries will have a hundred times more charge in them in those supercapacitors so the last longer between charges

Your Yamaha receiver contains a Burr Brown DSD1791 stereo DAC. Get hold of the data sheet for this. The DAC provides balanced differential outputs for left and right channels, L+, L-, R+, R-. These outputs will be fed into an anti aliasing filter, which could be a simple RC filter or it could be an active filter using a couple of op. amps. You're going to need to trace the circuit out or get hold of a schematic diagram for the Yamaha. You need to find the output of the two anti aliasing filters. Then you need a little bit of circuitry using a high performance audio op.amp such as NE5532 or NE5534 configured as a voltage follower, which has a high input impedance and low output impedance. Connect the output of the anti aliasing filters to the input of the NE5532 voltage followers. If you are lucky, you will get a high enough output voltage from the output of the voltage followers. If not, then you will need a non inverting amplifier circuit, again using NE5532 op. amps. Determine what gain you need , and ideally set it with decent quality low nice, low tolerance resistors. Connect the output of the voltage followers (or non inverting amplifiers) to RCA phono jack's that you mount to the chassis. Sort out the power supply for the NE5532 devices. If you are not strong on electronics and op. amp circuits, then I would not recommend undertaking this.
