Fantastic review Andrew. As always, you go in depth and focus on the critical information. I would love if you make a video recommending the type of batteries and, or power source for each one of the lights. Let's say what you would recommend for the Aputure 300 D, 300 X, NovaP 300, Nova P600, 600 D, 600 X and of course, for the monster in this video. It's impossible to find people that talk in detail about their experiences with different power sources for lightning.

Excellent review like always. For anyone who wants this light don't expect to get your hands on it anytime soon. I put in an order for a 600D 4 months ago and still don't have a definite delivery date. I bought the Nanlux Evoke 1200 at the same time and received it a while ago. I like Aputure lights, but it takes them so long to stock anything. With the 1200D being the newest light in the lineup they will be very hard to find. Getting a Nanlux you sacrifice the free case, but you actually get the light to shoot with.

I went with the evoke 1200 for the increased brightness and lower power consumption, but also that it's in stock right now. Can't go wrong with either, but the fact that I can buy the evoke right now as opposed to waiting month after month like how I waited for the 600d is definitely a factor.

@cfl4286
@cfl4286 2 жыл бұрын
@@willvazquez3218 based on the video above it is indeed brighter when comparing each with their own reflector, which is how I plan to use it. If you're talking bare chip vs bare chip then you are correct, but I can't see myself using it that way, or even putting it through a softbox very often. It's going to replace renting an M18 for me, so it will almost always either be outside or a good deal away from the subject where it will need to be shaped and modified. So given that circumstance, the evoke is brighter at similar beam angles, as andrew's measurements show. Plus with the evoke, I can plug two of them into a 20 amp circuit, which you probably cant do with the 1200d. No hate, though. If the evoke didn't exist I would buy the aputure in a heartbeat haha. The evoke just fits what I'm wanting to do with it a bit better.

I just ordered this one to use for high speed cinematography. We currently have the 300D and the 600D as well. We are currently filming bees in 1000-2000fps and we often have to raise ISO to 4000 which creates a bit of grain. I may not use this at full power though since we of course have to protect the eyes of the insects. I'm not sure how sensitive they are but the 600D seemed to cause no problems and was less bright than the sun.

There should be a standard for measuring the beam angle of a light(and reflectors), otherwise how can we objectively compare the relative outputs of lights. One manufacture suggests "only measure the light to the angle where the intensity falls below 50% of the initial intensity in the center of the beam" So mark the light where it falls off one stop. But measuring the light is a little more difficult than appears. If you point a light into a flat wall, the edges of the beam will be further away from the light than the center. A perfectly even 90 degree beam would have 1 stop loss at the edges, due to the inverse square law. So you would need to ensure that your meter readings all take place at equal distances from the light. So tie a string to the light and meter, or use a circular shaped background and put the light at the radius ...etc. For the trigonometric calculations, measure the distance between both sides where the light falls off one stop. Inverse Tan(half the distance between marked points/distance of light to wall). Then multiply the result by 2 to get the beam angle in degrees. I have done this for the Prolycht 300 FS and get a beam angle at 42 degrees

I'm actually going two of each. Two evokes fit on a small shelf in my large van, the only space I had available. If you really need a spotlight with more output than the 600d you should look for other brands who have dedicated fixtures for that. Aputure wouldn’t focus on things like a spotlight for the 1200d because it wouldn’t be worth it since the market for that is way smaller. If you need a ton of daylight firepower in a spotlight then just go with a HMI one like RobertJuliat 1.2k. With smaller light fixtures they can make something that “does it all” but for big fixtures like this…. Would be a waste of time and resources they can put in development of other new fixtures.

@@aebonstudio7193 Well this light is indeed aimed at professionals (I don’t know how that differs from the “common user” btw). But for a specific use case which is not precision optics but a lot of good quality output. A fresnel would definitely be an option (if they can figure out how to make an even bigger fresnel which doesn’t break the bowens mount due to weight). Talking about the spotlight… I don’t expect that happening anytime soon. But we’ll see. Just go with good old HMI for now. They are fine too ;) otherwise ETC led S4 or something like that.

How long does the LED last? and how does the light output/color change over time? when the LED finally goes, is there a way to replace that part of the light, or does one need to throw away the whole light and buy another, instead of replacing a bulb like on a traditional HMI. LEDs last a long time, but eventually they fail. and color shift. Does Aperture have any data on these things?

I have never owned an LED light long enough to know the answer to this. I'm constantly updating my kit. My oldest LED lights are Bi-colour 1x1 panels. They still seem to be good 7 years on. Awesome review as usual! I would say the build quality of modern aputure lights is really great for the price point and would probably be the biggest factor for me when comparing it to the evoke 1200. There is a bit of an elephant in the room though… in the evoke review you mentioned it actually only draws 1000watt but it looks like the aputure can max out at around 1400watt. Given the brightness is so similar (depending on reflector configuration) the evoke might come in handy when you need a few of them running off household power because of the lower power draw?

Thanks for the replies. In Australia we are 240v so one evoke should be under 5amps at a 1000watt power draw. For other lower voltage regions, the general point I’m trying to make is still relevant, if you would like to add a lower powered light to supplement the Evoke. You have more leeway than with the aputure. That’s the crux of it - happy to be proven wrong if I’ve missed something here Cheers

@@gdrriley420 gotchya, thanks for the reply. Interesting to have some more insight into that. I suppose as long as the single light is under the threshold for a single 15amp circuit you can always work around it by running some extra cables as needed. You would just need to be a bit more careful in the 100-120v regions as you mentioned. I am still a bit surprised that the Evoke competes so well with less power draw - it seems by sticking to a Bowen’s mount aputure had to make a few compromises (eg the built in mirror reflector surrounding the COB)

In my large van I now only carry 2 M40s as my only HMIs. All my smaller HMI were replaced with 2x Evoke 1200s, 2x Aputure 600d with F10s, a 600x with F10, and 2 Forza 500s for my light weight rigs. The only HMIs left in my small van are M18s. As soon as I get a second one of these they will be removed. For me it's the ability to run wireless DMX dimming, no heat up times, and no lamp stock, that has forced the change over. I don't know if I'm brave enough to sell my M18s yet.

@@gaffergear why do you choose to carry the nanlux 1200 over the aputure 1200s pro ?
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 2 жыл бұрын
@@creativegreats6924 in my large van the decision was down to space, I fitted two kits with 45⁰ and 60⁰ dishes into a very small space. As I run everything off lumin radio in that van not having access to the controls (the biggest design flaw) isn't an issue. No way could I fit two 1200Ds In my small van I now have two Aputure 1200 kits. Because the guys running that van for me need to be able to access the controls to dim, because they don't run lumin radio. Most of the guys run Siduus link on their phones, and the light is easier to move around as I get the whole kit into one bag.

Here's a question that might only expose my general ignorance about electrical wiring. The context is that I mostly film - both interviews and B-roll - on location. So, I've been to museums, schools, old government buildings. Now, this 1200d would solve some problems for me. But, if I plug in a 1200d (plus some other lights), do I risk throwing a fuse?
