Loosing that crank bolt is the FIRST step in doing this timing belt. Reason being is if you do not break it loose you cannot do the timing belt. So before you drain coolant, before you even remove the timing covers, try breaking the crank Bolt loose first. Great video btw

I know it’s not recommended but I had to use the starter and a cheater bar with my 1/2 19mm socket to bust the crank bolt loose. My air compressor didn’t have enough pressure to get it done and no other way to get it off. Did this on an Odyssey and an Accord. I know you risk damaging the flywheel but it literally comes loose with one tiny bump of the starter. Then you must replace with a new bolt as the threads have stretched when torqued. I think I paid 16 bucks for that. Dealer only part. I only use the best parts, don’t skimp, you do NOT want to have to go back in due to a budget water pump, tensioner etc. Amazon has a great factory kit for under 200 bucks.

A friend bought a 2003 Acura MDX with 100,000 miles, and he is now at 170,000. Is there a way to inspect the condition of the belt easily, thru a belt inspection plate, or something?? Nice video with excellent camera and use of the green laser pointer made it very clear. Good job !!
@bundysgarage
@bundysgarage 6 жыл бұрын
You can see the belt thru the tiny covers on the top timing belt cover but why risk it? The Timing belt is cheap compared to an engine and installation, a belt with that many miles. Just change it and all the comoonenets. Its not worth the gamble.
@jonrandall5490
@jonrandall5490 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks much. The main point is he has no record of the belt being changed, but we don't know for sure that it has never been changed. I have seen change interval recommendations at 60,000, and 75,000 miles. One guy said he has not changed his in 300,000 miles ! Another said Acura recommends changes every 7 years. If my friends has been changed at 75,000 miles (before he owned it) I am trying to figure out if another change is needed. He may also have the factory belt which has 170,000 on it now. Having a non dangerous timing belt is a necessity with these vehicles. I think belt, tensioners, water pump,etc... run around $150. - $200. for kits. Doing this job is no walk in the park either. So it gets a bit expensive in a hurry. Just want to try to establish if his needs it or not. Thanks much for your help, and for the great video !
@bundysgarage
@bundysgarage 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can pop off the front top cover closest to the radiator. 5 10MM bolts hold it in. If you can see markings, like who made the belt that’s a good indication that the belt is fairly new. Not always true cause it only rubs off cause it rubbing against the pulleys. So it could still have the markings cause it has no miles on it but be 20 years old which is not good either. Hope that helps.

I have another question. Due to the low profile of the acura cl and the tl, are you aware of any drive up ramps which work for these cars. I had to return a set because the front nose hit the ramps before the tires did. Trying to get the car elevated so I can get under the car without the need of jacking it up with a pump jack and stands.. in order to work under the car.

I purchased a set of low profile high strength foam ramps for my 14 Taurus. The ramps go just high enough to drive up on. That gives me the ability to drive on. The added bonus of that plan is I can then have enough room to place my axle jack under the vehicle.lift one side at a time or with my extended cross bar place the Harbor Freight axle jack and raise both sides at once. Enough room to slide the jack under and raise enough to place jack stands.

You don't actually need the torch, at least in my experience, to get that crank-bolt off. I used the Ingersol Rand 19mm Power Socket, and the DeWalt DCF899 (1100 ft-lbs) impact wrench and that sucker came right off. You can also use the Milwaukee 2767-20 (1400 ft-lbs) - both of these cordless tools easily do the job. Surprisingly, the air-operated wrenches do not do it.

Hi. Need ur advice please. My acura tl engine is under recall for burning oil.so the dealership will rebuilt it. Should i pay them extra or will it be less labour to do this stuff as they will already be working on engine?
@bundysgarage
@bundysgarage 4 жыл бұрын
Well the question you need to ask yourself, are you capable of doing the work to “save money”? Or are you going to take it to a different shop? Are they going to rebuild it or get a used block and swap everything over. How much did they quote you to do the water pump and timing belt and seal?
@inderveerbilling
@inderveerbilling 4 жыл бұрын

That’s what you need to determine. If they rebuild yours they do not need to remove the engine. If they replace the block then yes it needs to come out.

honda specifically states DO NOT use an impact on the crank bolt. The reason is it will damage the crankshaft bearings bye rattling the crankshaft around in those bearings putting dents in them because they are made of brass and the crankshaft is hardened steel it's like hitting them with a hammer they are Journal bearings meaning high pressure oil makes the crankshaft float in the center of the oil being pumped around the crankshaft so when the engine is not running it is sitting on the bearing metal on metal that's why low oil pressure will cause immediate damage to any engine just like an impact gun on the crankshaft bearing. Use a large breaker bar and a large long cheater bar and the tool made to go inside the harmonic balancer pulley to hold it still if the engine still in the car you have a few options in a manual transmission you can leave The Wheels on the car put the car in gear put the E-brake on have a friend sit in the car and then this is a tricky part turn the car on press the brake pedal down hard hold the brake pedal there turn the car off do not lift up off the brake pedal so the vacuum assist is still helping hold the brakes tight then try to loosen the crankshaft Bolt. In an automatic put it in park put on the emergency brake have a friend in the car start the engine press the brake pedal down hard turn the car off do not lift up on the brake pedal so the vacuum assist is still helping hold the brakes type and try to break the crankshaft bolt loose.

No you don’t need a new engine. You need to remove both heads have them sent to a machine shop to check for valve damage. 95% chance there is valve damage. Once you do that you need to get Fel Pro Head gaskets and new head bolts. Install both heads and then do a timing belt component kit on the vehicle. If you do it yourself $500 - $600 in parts alone. That does not include your labor. If you want to confirm the belt is broken. Remove the front top timing belt cover, 5 10MM bolts and it’s off and you can see if the belt is broken.

@bundysgarage
@bundysgarage 4 жыл бұрын
You could but why would you want to. If the belt breaks your going to paying a whole lot more than the cost of parts and labor for repacking the timing belt. Or just buy the timing belt component kit (AISIN) off of Rockauto.com and watch my timing belt video that goes they step-by-step on what you need to do

Interference engines sustain tremendous internal damage if the timing belt fails so always replace the belt when replacing any associated parts.

Bundy, I made the biggest mistake by taking the timing belt off before aline all the timing marks, is there anything I can do to make sure my engine won't get fuck when I put the new belt in? What can I do to get my timing right?
@bundysgarage

Leave the cams and crank exactly where they are. Mark the cams with a mark on the cam and one on the cylinder head. So that on both front and rear cams. Them make a mark on the crank and the engine block. You will use those as your new reference points when putting the new belt on. You need to put the new belt on without moving the cams or the crank. Does that make sense?
@bundysgarage
@bundysgarage 6 жыл бұрын
Use nail polish like hot pink or red so you don’t lose your place on the cams and crank.

BundysGarage i accidentally turned my engine clock wise by the front timing gear without the dowl pin in, it turned only a quarter forward do i just turn it back where the dowl lines up? Should that be ok?
@bundysgarage

To avoid engine damage to gotta get the no 1 cylinder back to TDC. Otherwise you run the risk of damaging the valve

While you have that engine out, can that belt tensioner bracket be remove along with the alternator bracket? My 12mm bolt broke flush in the hole, I need to drill it out and tap in new hole thread.

Why don't you just use the gun to get the crank bolt out after you align the TDC
