In this third video of the series, Randy is again at Kenetrek Boots Headquarters, talking with Marketing Manager Wyatt Nielson about boots systems.
We started with socks and liners, then went to boot selection, and in this video we talk about one of the most overlooked parts of a boot system; gaiters. We discuss hunting gaiters and hiking gaiters, the use for each in keep moisture, snow, and debris out of your boots.
Many people question the need or value in gaiters. Once they use them for a season, the answers to those questions become self-evident.
Thanks for watching.

Thanks Randy... one of the biggest reasons I wear gators early season is bugs - specifically ticks. I treat my gators with permethrin (as well as my pants and boots and jacket) but that gives me peace of mind knowing they won't be in my pants/socks.

I tie a small loop of 550 chord to the front of each boot to attach my gaiters. Saves a LOT of shoestring wear. Just leave the loop on the boot, it's small enough to not be a bother when not using gaiters.

Where do you tie the 550 chord? Do you mean you tie it around the whole of the front of the boots?
@dalton916
@dalton916 3 жыл бұрын
@@msato8650 No. Most boots will have a tab near where the shoestrings start and I tie the loop of 550 chord there. I then hook the front tab of the gaiters to this loop instead of my shoestrings. This keeps from having the wear caused by the metal tab from breaking my shoestrings. If your boots don’t have this tab then you can run a loop through the bottom two shoestring eyes.

@@dalton916 brilliant idea, thanks! My shoe strings wear out rather quickly because of the metal hook on the gaiter, your idea will stop that from happening.

I’m always amazed at the number of hunters I see in the winter without gaiters. They obviously have never been backcountry skiing or winter mountaineering. Over the course of a week camping/hunting in the winter, I actually am wearing my gaiters more hours than my hunting boots. Whenever I’m working around camp, or making that midnight run to the woods, I’m wearing a lightweight pair of chukkas with my gaiters. It gives my feet a break from the boots and the boots more time to air out.

I thought gaiters were the stuff of the 1800s until I went hiking in Scotland. When you are relentlessly tramping around in wet conditions, with shin or knee high foliage, then gaiters take a lot of your problems and transfers them to the ground. My boots are bomb proof, oiled and exceptional, the rest of my kit is pretty decent too .... but there is a difference between theoretical conditions, and actually tramping around off the trail, where every plant and bush you contact, drains water right onto your legs. It took me decades to realise why so many armies wore these, and it does not surprise me that hunters do too.

Almost every hunter in Mesopotamia regions wouldn’t leave home without wearing one to go mountain hunting, mostly goat hunting. It’s been a tradition of locals to make it from goat wool for thousands of years to today. I have used one too. Its not waterproof, but snow repellent, but most important, it gives you a sense of some security when walking in brushes and paths. Now a better idea is that to have those wool gaiters made with a thin waterproof layer outside that makes it perfect tool to have .
@strartur

I think, imho, that it would be fair to talk a bit about the downsides of wearing gaiters: In my field experience with gaiters (also goretex): - The velcro gets stuffed with grass and thin vegetation fibers after a couple of hunts. And it's a pain to remove it. - your legs sweat under gaitors, even with goretex. Especially when putting miles on and on. And then they chill down. And I've tried different pants. The next logic step would be bringing on the market gaitors-conform pants 🤦. And a word re goretex: it's not the ultimate product, it wears out soon, pores get clogged, the membrane develops micro cracks and doesn't function to its initial levels.

We just got a pair of these today to try for crew field work in the oil and gas, pipeline and forest resources business. First thing we noticed trying them on is that the strap that goes under the boot and the buckle it buckles into are both sewn on way too far forward, closer to the ball of the foot, not back toward the heel and directly under the instep. The only way we could ever use these would be to take them somewhere and have the strap and buckle cut off and then reattached in the correct places. An alternative might be to just cut off the strap and try to do without it. Another thing is that we don't see any way that one could fasten these things closed at the bottom, or perhaps even anywhere else, if they are putting them over thicker pants, like insulated hunting pants. They are tight, almost even too tight, just over jeans. We bought this pair in size Large to try for a field crew member who wears a size 8-1/2 boot. (Wearing Wolverine Potomac style, not a bulky style, at time of try-on.) If we were going to keep them for that crew member's use, we'd probably have to exchange them for the Extra Large size.

A wax based treatment is the best boot treatment . Animal based greases are absolutely horrible on leather boots. Alaska is still the last free state in the country for now since the west just got invaded so bad. Long story short animal based fats go rancid and contain salt, which over time will eat through the stitching and cause your boot to come apart. I also used bear grease for years and it never was as waterproof as beeswax stuff Best brand ive found is Kenetrek Boot Wax. It smells good and works even gooder. Doesnt cause issues with most glue. Goes on like grease, let it set an hour, then wipe off excess and you have a waxy protective layer. Ive tried Aquaseal too, but Kenetrek stuff is better

Randy Newberg, Hunter In your new AK dall sheep series I see your team doing creek crossings without waterproof waders. Where you trudging through water with these and not getting wet? I’d like to know what you used on that hunt because this will be the first year (and possibly our last?) my 70 year old hunting buddy and I will be doing a backcountry elk hunt and there will be several water crossing about shin high. I’ve had a pair for years now, but the plastic buckle broke and Kenetrek said they’ll replace them for free and asked what flavor I’d like - soft camo or green/black nylon? Shall I go with the green nylon like you despite them being loading in Wyoming brush? I hate having to pick stickers out all the time and I imagine nylon would dry quicker. Thanks Randy!

In Australia we use gators because a number of the snakes here can kill you within as low as 30 mins of being bitten, the venom moves through your lymphatic system faster if you move, so if you get bitten out in the bush and there is nobody to carry you or you don't have bandages to stop the venom and call for help ...you're as we like to say ...farked 😬
